Looking for a big washable dog bed. not keen on plastic ones. Needs to be big enough for a Great dane. Seen some in pet shop but 80 pounds and no zip to whip off cover to chuck in washing machine

We got some very big "cushion" style ones with washable, removable covers from Pets at Home, for the back of the car, for our greys, and the two boys are VERY big, so not much smaller than a GD. In the house, we just have lots of Ikea duvets and covers - easy to wash, and cheap enough that they can nest and layer them to their hearts content. Grin

For a dog that size I'd consider a single mattress. Fitted sheets are cheap and easy to wash and the mattresses themselves are often going free or cheap on Freecyle, Preloved etc.

thanks. I tend to sit squashed between the dane and greyhound both love the settee. yes, i know its not right but hey ho. might try single mattress and duvets.
Thought 80 pounds was a lot for a bed you can't wash!!

Um, every grey I know has a sofa at the minimum, and very often will have colonised beds too. The story about the Princess and the Pea actually missed out that the princess had a particularly pointy nose and more whiskers than is usual for a heroine. Grin

Like the idea of the single mattress. Again, Ikea is worth a visit. Bless their little Swedish socks.

I am also v Envy about your Dane. They are gorgeous.

Barka parka

Fabulous.

We got through 2 beds a year with our huge, digging greyhounds - so far Barka Parkas have been going strong with no problems for 6 years.

Bertie the greyhound is currently snoozing and farting away to himself on a Danish Design bed (I just turned up the corner to check the label and got a most indignant look) - 50 inches by 30 inches. It was £45 at Partners Pets.

I find there is always a huge range of duvet type beds in TKMaxx and there does seem to be huge sizes when I am in, bottom shelf and sometimes folded over because they are so big. Prices are always good too.

My dogs have a memory foam matress that has a washable fleece cover over a waterproof cover. You can get them in Pets at home and they are wonderful! (Well, the dogs think so, anyway!)

We use old duvets, folded into 3. Then duvet covers are washable and can put extra towels/blankets on top.

I use an old double size duvet for my retriever/collie cross. Its perfect, folded over so she can really stretch out on it. I use old duvet covers and theyre easy to wash/change regularly. Even if you have to buy a new one, I'm sure a king/queen size one in Primark or Tescos is still much cheaper than buying a bed in a pet shop. Lovely and cosy in winter also!
