Many dog lovers will know that Wales currently has an unenviable reputation at the moment as a centre for puppy farming. Some of these premises are unregistered and even worse some are registered. There have been a number of high profile TV and press programmes and investigations and lots of work done by a number of charities/activists.
The Welsh Assembly Government has devolved powers on animal welfare (hence its recent and very welcome decision to ban shock collars). It is currently consulting on changing the rules governing establishments involved in breeding dogs, including making microchipping compulsory for bitches and pups (excellent). If you care about puppy farming, please spare some time over the Christmas holidays to respond to the consultation, particularly if you live in Wales, or are involved with dog breeding, or dog rescue work, as I know many of you are.
This is genuinely an exciting opportunity to make a step change difference in the welfare of dogs used for breeding. Hopefully, also, if Wales can get good legislation on this issue, then it can act as an exemplar of good practice for England.
You can go to the consultation via link here and the consultation closes on 13th January. You can even put your consultation in, in Welsh
