Puppy farming in Wales

Many dog lovers will know that Wales currently has an unenviable reputation at the moment as a centre for puppy farming. Sad Some of these premises are unregistered and even worse some are registered. There have been a number of high profile TV and press programmes and investigations and lots of work done by a number of charities/activists.

The Welsh Assembly Government has devolved powers on animal welfare (hence its recent and very welcome decision to ban shock collars). It is currently consulting on changing the rules governing establishments involved in breeding dogs, including making microchipping compulsory for bitches and pups (excellent). If you care about puppy farming, please spare some time over the Christmas holidays to respond to the consultation, particularly if you live in Wales, or are involved with dog breeding, or dog rescue work, as I know many of you are.

This is genuinely an exciting opportunity to make a step change difference in the welfare of dogs used for breeding. Hopefully, also, if Wales can get good legislation on this issue, then it can act as an exemplar of good practice for England. Xmas Grin

You can go to the consultation via link here and the consultation closes on 13th January. You can even put your consultation in, in Welsh Xmas Smile

Best I get off my ass and do what I should be doing - dog walking in the snow and praying that my groceries are delivered tomorrow!

However, I have that page open and waiting and will complete the consultation when I get back, you can be sure of that. Good on you for bringing it to our attention.

Good stuff, Val. What might be particularly appropriate is that although this is a Welsh consultation, English dog rescuers such as yourself could make the point that the cross border trade in pups and bitches (indeed, arguably the majority of pups go into England) means that English dog charities have a real stake in this vile trade and have to deal with the poor unfortunates who are the casualties.

Blush

I put this consultation link on a rescue forum having completed it myself and assurred people that it would only take 5 minutes to do.

Well, some did, including the rescue owner, but as he put it, "If you can compete that in 5 minutes you're a better man than me Val!"

Shock

Man?!

How very dare he!
