The doghouse

My Dads dog has died now :-(

We knew this was going to happen. They lost the lab a week ago and he has not been happy. He has never been without another dog before.

I was called to go and see him last night because he was trying to hide under a chair in the kitchen and wouldn't come into the living room and was howling like a wolf.

He calmed down when he saw me and came into the living room.

He went in his sleep this morning. My Dad was with him so he wasn't alone and he said it was peaceful. I have to help my Dad go and carry him to the vets now. He is too big for my Dad to lift.

My mum is in a state and stuck at work. She can't leave because there is no-one else to look after the shop.

I'm trying not to be hysterical. This feels so unfair. But they were 14 and 15 so have had a very long life for dogs of their size.

So sorry to hear about the loss of both of the dogs. It is good that your Dad has your support at the moment as it will be very hard for him.
I lost one of my dogs a few weeks ago, he was 12 so like your Dad's dogs he had had a long life but it is still awful and I am still grieving for him. I have 2 other dogs and one of them was very stressed after his pal went and we were worried about him too but luckily he is seeming a lot better now. But to lose all of your dogs within a very short time must been devastating. My heart goes out to you and your Mum and Dad xx

Yes it is devestating. We were meant to be bringing my puppy to him tonight to see if she could bring him any comfort Sad

My Dad said he came into the room this morning, laid on his mates blanket (we had kept this out for him to be able to smell her), sighed and went to sleep. After a while he whimpered a little and then stopped breathing.

I think he has just given up. He was only at the vets on Friday because we were so worried about him and apart from his artheritus, which we were already treating with supplements, he was very healthy for a dog of his age. We'd even managed to get a bit weight back on him, as he stopped eating after his mate became ill.

We did everything we could to try and help him with his loss.

I'm very worried about my Dad he has debilitating depression and knowing he had to care for his dogs was the only thing he got out of bed for on a morning Sad

I hope they get another dog, once they are over their loss. Despite our disgreements on the way their dogs were cared for, they had a good life and were well looked after and loved. They just didn't do things my way Smile.

Dooin you poor thing and your family - that is such a lot for you all to have to deal with.

Not a replacement but maybe there is another lonely, needy dog out there that could help your Mum and Dad. x

For me the only thing that makes any sense of dogs not living long enough, is that it potentially means that another dog that needs a good home might get one.

They can never replace the dog you have lost as they are all different but for me it helps to have another doggy about. The house is depressing as it is too still and silent without dogs in it and doesn't feel like home.

Oh Dooin, I'm so, so very sorry. I may not know you but I think I have a bloody good idea of how much you loved that dog.

My heart's with you and I wish I could make it all better for you. I'm in tears for you, just so very very sorry.

Val x

I'm so sorry for you and your family. To lose both dogs within such a short space must be a dreadful shock. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Your parents are very lucky to have such a caring, thoughtful daughter.

Vall I thought the world of him. He was my dog.

I owe my life that dog. Literally. He stopped an attack on me from another large dog, who was released onto the field without the eejit owners ensuring no-one was on the field. The dog had been trained to be agressive Angry

Cujo (who was a very clever dog) was walking my friend home across the field because she was scared of the dark. I was sure the other dog was going to catch me, when out of no-where Cujo appeared and floored him. He wouldn't get off the other dog until the owners had it contained. He'd never attacked another dog before and never did it again.

Oh no, I was praying this wouldn't be you Dooin. Not that I'd wish this on anyone, but I know how much you've been through with your dogs and I was really hoping the Akita would make it through.

Give your puppy an extra big hug, I know I need to go and do the same right now, am so upset for you. And do tell us a bit more about Cujo if it helps, he sounds like an amazing dog and we're all happy to read doggy tales!

I have told dd1. She was hysterical over the lab, but seems to be handling this better. Cujo was not raised with small children and was very large and powerful so we were careful not to let the children too close to him, just incase, although he never showed any agression to them. He seemed to like being out of their way. The lab was very gentle and submissive all the kids loved her.

She is upset, but more for my Mum and Dad. She doesn't want to buy them Cillit Bang and Persil small but mighty for x-mas anymore Hmm. She thinks we should go x-mas shopping at the local pound instead. She says Nana's house has always had dogs and it's not right that it doesn't have any now. But they can't have our dogs because she would miss them too much, so we will just have to go the pound and get them another one.

She has bought our dogs some special treats and is with our pup atm.

They both sound like wonderful dogs Dooin. It has made cry as well, hearing about them.

It is so bloody unfair that dogs have such a relatively short life. I feel for you all at the minute, having recently lost one of my dogs too, I am all too aware how awful it is.

Well I guess the silver lining is that there will be one less cold and lonely mutt in our pound this x-mas. I've just had a message from my sister. My Dad wants me to find them a medium sized dog or bitch because he cannot bear being in the house without a dog. My sis said he has just sat and cried the whole afternoon, until she said if he got a new dog she would pay for insurance and help with walking.

Not sure where you live, but there are loads of really lovely dogs on the Many Tears website. I think there are quite a few breeders and owners having a pre-Christmas clear out of unwanted dogs Sad.

so many places to chose a rescue dog. A site I frequently look at even though I can't offer any of the lovely dogs is prodogs

I think he will go to our pound. He has enough experience of dogs to know what he is doing. He helped me choose mine from there and after seeing the conditions they are kept in I think he wants to save one from having to spend it's final days in that hell hole.

Dooin, I know what your Dad means about not liking the house without a dog, I lasted for 3 weeks but it really hurt me every single day and our family hated it.

now, we have two, after tomorrow we will have 3! We are calling her the 3 week holiday dog, but alas I have bought her a christmas pressie.

You know how to get me if you want a chat. x

I'm so sorry for your loss. It hurts so much a lose a pet, not to mention 2 pets, especially since most pets feel like siblings or children. I wish everyone the best as they try to get through this tough time.

I think it will do your mum and dad the world of good to get a new dog. Of course its not a replacement, but it will help them cope with their loss a bit better.

My puppy died in May and we waited until August to get a new puppy. I was ready to go out the following week to get a new pup but we had to wait to make sure we found the right pup for us. One that was healthy and was unlikely to die young like the first.

He really has helped me come to terms with my loss. I still cry for my first pup, but I'd still be in that very dark place I was in for the first few weeks after he died had we not got another pup.

I really hope they can find a special dog that they can save and give a very happy life to.
