Home Checks

Hi I am seriously considering adopting rescue dog and wondered what a home check entails. I'm not overly worried but DH is a bit Hmm about it (home check not the dog) and needs reassurance.

I'm sure we'll be ok we have a fair sized secure garden and a reasonable amount of space inside without any obvious hazards but, I could be missing something.

Am sure you'll be fine. I used to be a homechecker for a rescue. The homechecker just wants to come and see you and have a bit of a chat, to make sure you know what you are getting into. Nothing to worry about.

Good luck & keep us posted please Wink

What Bella said. The amount of detail gone into will of course depend on what info you are required to give upon application and whether you go to the rescue to meet the dogs and the rescue staff prior to the check or not. Each rescue has it's own way of doing things.

A homecheck might, for example, consist of a need to meet all the household, but wouldn't if this had already been done at the rescue.

We look for common sense, no obvious hazards, secure gardens, a mortgage agreement or similar to show you own the house or a proof that a landlord agrees to allow you a dog, well treated existing pets, well behaved children (i.e. not the type which are seen to be pulling the existing dog or cat around etc), and well... more common sense really.

We don't want to go poking about in your undie drawers or judge you on the dirty washing up on the drainer, honest!!

Good luck. What are you thinking of adopting? (Go on, make me jealous... ) :)

Thanks for your quick replies guys.
Does this mean they'll expect everyone to be at home in which case they would need to come in the evening or at the weekend.

Hope I'm not tempting fate but my first choice is Camray on the MT site though Dh prefers Civic his brother they are Border/Rough Collies. I keep checking to make sure no one else has reserved.
Just off to check for the zillionth time today. I'll be back later Grin
