The doghouse

Do any of you go running with your dog?

I need to do some sport, but my timetable is pretty tight, so I was thinking of combining a jog with the dog walk first thing. Do any of you do this?

I think I might have to drive to the local park and run with him off the lead to avoid the stopping and sniffing being a problem. Also because he loves it when I run anywhere and starts leaping around, so it might be hard in the street.

Grateful for any personal experience!

He is a 1yo golden retriever btw.

I used to do this with my lovely young dog. But she died very suddenly and prematurely about six months ago.

I now have another pup and am waiting for her to mature. My dog wasn't as big as your retriever so I had to be aware of when she might need a break. I let her off the lead so that she was able to take a break and then sprint to me.

She loved it! I didn't go all that far but we had fun, esp. when my husband went with us.

Enjoy yourselves.

My dh did. We have a chocolate lab. Dh did 9 miles a night and took dog few times a week- dropped dog back after 6. Had a jogging lead (useless).

Vet told us to stop as it outs too much pressure on their knees and causes problems in later life.

Free running in a park may be better.

My friends all say the vet was talking @@@@

Dh hated jogging with dog as he always felt ready to fall over the lead/ be tripped up etc

thanks very much! Sounds like the park running off the lead might be OK. I though the lead might be really annoying - he wraps it round me even when I'm just ambling.

DH runs with our dog (cocker spaniel). They do about 5 or 6 miles I think. The dog loves it - she goes off the lead mostly and she generally stays quite near him. DH says the annoying thing is he has to keep looking out for when she stops for a poo though, so he can scoop it up.

Hi
I have a Samoyed and they are meant to run for 90 mins a day. I don't (quite) make that but I have a proper canicross belt similar to:

www.pettastic-petsupplies.co.uk/hands-free-waist-jogging-lead-leash-for-running-or-walking-with-your-dog-336-p.asp

I also use a dog sled harness that is padded so his fur does not get tangled.

He trained with me from when we had him as a resuce at 2 years and when I was training for a Marathon he went up to 18 miles with me. Loves it. Vet was very happy with him training as we worked it up gradually on a proper plan and the breed are made for it.

He still gets incredibly excited when he sees me in runnuing gear (he knows the difference to ordinary clothes)

Look up Cani X and there are even people who do proper races.

I run with my terrier, on the leash (he has v limited recall, so is only allowed to run free on redcall line atm)

I have a Halti multi way lead for him which I can strap around my waist/shoulder and make hands free. At first he would try and run in front of me but he soon learnt. I have discovered that having him strapped to me actually helps tone me more as I have to sue my abs to stop him pulling me forward too fast.

Gosh, my pup would like nothing better than to yank me through the forest on a harness!

I take my jack russell and he loves it - i have to shout him sometimes when he runs off after other dogs or tries to catch the pheasants.

He gets very excited if he sees me in my running gear.

Havent been very far with him as Im injured but i think he would keep going for long time

I used to run with my collies off-lead when they were younger. I'm not sure who enjoyed it more - me or them!

I do. He loves it but tends to get a bit over-excited so can be a bit annoying for me.

Well I had a first go this morning and it was fine, except that I'm totally unfit and kept getting a stitch Blush. He was very good - he kept an eye and followed me round the park.

DH runs with one of our greyhounds - they both love it. Would seriously consider doing Cani X if there were more events near us - looks great. The cani x lead/harness arrangement looks good as it allows you to be hands free and absorbs shocks of running.

Nope-we have two Rottweilers so not usually but if they have a change of heart-then so do I [hgrin].

DH runs with our lab. He goes hashing (very sociable cross country, following a sawdust trail so there are plently of stops when they get lost or go down false trails). The dogs who go are called the hash hounds and absolutely love it. Harry is 9 and the hash is about 5 or 6 miles, off lead unless they cross a road.

I now have a cocker pup and he will go too when he is old enough and has a recall.

I go with my loopy lurcher, we go about 4 miles 3 x week. We go cross country and he is off lead all the time, he just doubles back and sit right behind my left knee and just runs with me. He loves it, i have thought about cani x but it hasn't really got a presence here in suffolk yet!!

Be very careful with their paws if you are running on tarmac - they can get damaged easily. Running is fine if you do it like most people do on here, with the dog off-lead, but it's not fine if the dog is on the lead all the time and has no choice but to run (unless it's a pulling breed like a samoyed or husky). Dogs like to stop and sniff when out on walks, not just run, and it can damage their knees/hips. Like everything else really - all in moderation!

raindroprhyme · 24/10/2010 19:13

exactly everything in moderation,
Consult your vet about any concerns for your dogs joints.
husky's need time to sniff and do their business to! Hmm
Warm up and down as you would do anyway and dog gets a chance to sniff etc. The advantage of using the cani cross harnesss arrangemnet is the dog begins to associate it with running so when is on the 'lead' not harness knows it is for a walk.
You can get boots for your dog to wear if you are road running. Also having water with you for the dog is essential you can get bottles with a little trough attached which are great.
I assume you wouldn't run every walk morning and night with your dog( you are a hell of a lot more dedicated than me if that is the case) so runiing 4 - 5 times a week with you as well as walks the rest of teh time is perfectly suitable for most domesticated dogs.

Don't worry raindrop I'm not that keen! He might get 30mins 4x/wk max. Also there are always puddles everywhere so plenty of drinks. I'm only going to run in the park I think, so he won't need to be on the lead, not get sore paws.

Bedlam I would like to see you lumping along with a prancing great Dane Grin.

I run with my short legged jack russell, he is 5 and never seems to tire. If he doesn´t get at least 3 runs a week he misses it so if am injured or whatever I cycle and he runs (and runs and runs...)
