It's not clear exactly how many nurses are working when.

One shift was run by a bank nurse who hadn't been on the ward for a few months, with an agency nurse on the ward for the first time and a student nurse on her first ward placement.

Doesn't seem right.

Happens every day of the week.
Im sorry to say that it does happen, apauling.
THE very reason why i dont and never ever will work on a ward. I couldnt sleep at night with that on my mind.

Charts not filled in.

I guess they don't have enough nurses. The bank nurse commented that the nurses were being ground down by the system and some had developed coping strategies of not caring about the patients.

Leaving in droves. Conditions are bad BUT always have been for as long as i can remember, you still dont neglect basic needs.

only caught the end (obv) - was the overspend happening at the same time as all that? How could they spend that much? That's about 4 nurses-worth isn't it?

I couldn't watch it, but I can imagine. Doesn't matter how bad you perceive the pay, conditions, whatever to be - if you don't want to be a nurse, you should get out of the profession, not leave vulnerable patients in the these states. How any human can do that to another is beyond me.

I didn't catch all of it myself, CarolinaMoon, but I think the ward's overspend was the fault of the previous ward manager. I think she was removed from her post.

I think part of it is to do with the professionalisation of nursing - they're so busy being professionals that wiping up someone's shit is beneath them.

It was horrific. I hope there's a massive scandal about it. But I doubt there will be.

Sad to say on a ho;iday recently 1 of the people is a nurse, 10y cancer and now upto 16y and was told 'oh your in the caring profession' the reply 'caring, NO we just follow drs orders', that certainly stopped conversation.

As far as i could see there were very few changes even months after they were told of problems, well, try to avoid Brighton, tho it would have been nice to see footage from a well run ward elsewhere for a look at how it is being done well.

I now wish I'd complained about a nurse years ago who was failing to treat my brother properly in hospital. How much emotional blackmail is going on because they are "caring", under-funded, underpaid, angels, moral guardians etc etc. Honestly, the woman who was supposed to be looking after him was so bad, and we let her get away with it because she had the moral authority of being a nurse. Nobody else from any other profession would have got such leeway. And I have no doubt that some of them milk it to the full and that old people are the most horribly vulnerable group in society, who are stoic and uncomplaining and don't want to make a fuss. That poor woman who died and was only noticed (by an undercover journalist) one and a half hours later. What a horrific death. No wonder people are in favour of euthanasia, if that's the alternative.

i watched it - i first of all was shocked becuase it was the royal sussex as my daughter has always been seen quickly and efficiently by audiology - although that is different
was also quite pertinant as my nan was in hospital recently as shes 86 likleyhood i that she will be again.

however would like to say that my nan got a birthday card sent to her home from a lady doctor at the hospital. that was really really nice.

All my relatives insist on visiting in shifts when anyone is in hospital, the theory being that if you don't get lots of visitors, the ward staff won't think anyone cares about you and won't look after you.

I always used to think they were mad, now I'm wondering if they have a point.

I hate to say this but some of what was on there I have seen happen - i have challenged etc but as a student nurse you get loads of crap as well. There are ways tho and I reported what was happening ot the uni. For example feeding a chap with adv dementia.. everytime he wanted a mouthful he would touch my hand. He ate the most he had for a long time and smiled at me and showed some recognition. A HCA turned around - infront of all other patients incluing this guy and said 'you wont be able to take that long feeding someone when your qualified' and she is practically force feeding another patient. It was disgusting. I have to say though in terms of toilets/commode ward was really good on the most part.

There was another incident where i was student (2nd placement) and I was left on my own with several ladies who were very unwell and demented and falling risks helping one lady with commode, another defecated and was about to fall out and another was also goingt o fall. I sought help and was reprimanded for interupting the conversation between staff!

Oh and dont get me started on the cigerette breaks and the.. oh he is just difficult!
