not only that, he's an old Etonian

I don't know why, but it just seems so wrong

I know.

It's weird when you first hear him speak.

Also Stringer Bell is from LOndon - that's not quite so weird though.

i haven't heard him-am assuming he must sound rather posh though. Actually I don't think I want to hear him!

hey it's a good thing macnulty is posh, otherwise he wouldn't have read at trinners for college and we couldn't claim him as an honorary irishman (see it's not just you english who steal other countries famous people we did it with great success with daniel day lewis as well)
he does however have the weirdest accent going due to living in so many places.

also stringer bells appearences in the latest season of the office were hilarious.

Yes odd when you find it out. But he doesn't sound posh. Also Stringer Bell (but that just makes him all the more deisrable imo). And Lester Freemon is British too, you know.

Didn't know SB is in The Office. Must check it out.

and mayor carcaetti (sp) is an irishman

Report
TheArmadillo · 07/07/2009 10:18

mayor carcetti was the lead in as queer as folk.

I've only ever seen him in that and then the wire.

Bit of a shock - when he grinned I kept expecting him to leap on the nearest young man

Here's a thought for you Wire fans. IMO the only crap character (as in both under-developed and badly acted) is the woman who runs his campaign (can't remember her name).

Agree??

Report
mayorquimby · 07/07/2009 10:31

the one who he has obviously slept with before but stops her on election night?
no i think she's alright, developed as much as could be allowed imo, but i'd agree on the actor.she was a bit wooden or something but i thought that kind of fitted in with the character who was highly educated but showed very little emotion (once again thinking of when she tries to get the mayor elect to shag her and when he's not interested she just shrugs her shoulders and seems wholely unaffected by it all).

although then again i won't hear a bad word against the wire. it is the most satisfying piece of entertainment, out of movies or books or tv shows, i have enjoyed in a long time. the last 3 episodes were all just so perfect, i didn't think aything would top the sopranos tv wise and then the wire just about bettered it. so maybe it's my bias showing through.

agree she's meant to be a bit emotionless. can't remember her name either!

and yes the Wire is brilliant, I love it...

haven't seen it all yet-must order season 4 (and then try not to watch it all too fast!)

Hmm I just think that she's a bit of a cliche in a show that absolutely does not trade in cliches.

But it could be the actress, she's just not as good as the rest.

And I completely agree with you Mayorq, dh and I have had serious withdrawal symptoms since we finished watching it. In fact we may start again.

Cat - I'm jealous that you still have two series to watch. Series 4 - boy have you got an emotional roller-coaster ahead...!

yep i'm very jealous. i got my gf into it so i got to re-watch the whole thing again in the last 2 months or so. but i was still jealous that she was watching it fresh for the first time.

you should watch "the corner" it's a mini-series about the drug addicts in baltimore by the same people.

i'm actually reading the book that inspired the wire "homicide:a year on the killing streets at the moment" just to fully complete my obsession.

squeaver · 07/07/2009 11:09

Oh my dh has that book - it's in his "pile". Think I might nab it, actually.

I finished season 5 a few days ago and feel rather lost. Omar was my favourite, I keep thinking about watching the whole thing again, I do miss those corner boys.

Anyone seen The Corner?

Report
mayorquimby · 07/07/2009 11:17

yep, got it on dvd. in much the same way as parts of the wire, it is utterly utterly depressing but just absolutely brilliant.
it's mainly about the drug addicts and their story so you don't get any of the cops v robbers tension etc. it's focussed on the effects drugs has on one family and is broken up into 3 sections the mums story, the dads and the son.
but it's got a lot of the same brilliant actors and some really dark humour in the bleakest of circumstances like the wire.

and yes Omar was definitely the best character, followed by the BUNK and lester.

Report
CatIsSleepy · 07/07/2009 11:18

ah...omar's my favourite too!

(am now expecting to hear he's from norfolk or somewhere equally unlikely )

am quite excited about watching season 4 now!

I think Bunk had the funniest lines

he's from new york i think. but there is a good story about him.
you know the girl gangsta snoop? he found her in a baltimore club and only went over cause he couldn't decipher if she was a really young male or a woman.
anyway after talking to her he decided she had to be on the show because she was to use his words "pure baltimore", she was an actual gansgter and drug dealer. so for the first few months of her being in the wire she was acting in the morning playing a gangster and then at night she was actually out on the corners selling crack as she was still involved in the drugs game.

luckily she gave it up after a while when she realised what an opportunity she had.

LOL at "The Bunk"...I loved him and his cigars.

Might give The Corner a go then.

Damian Lewis in 'Life', Hugh Laurie in 'House' and Dominic West in 'The Wire' - all old Etonians. Weird isn't it.

It must be the latest fashion in the US
