Is it good? I have happened across a couple of episodes from Season 2 and it looks like something I might like, but I have no idea what is going on plot-wise. I thought it might be worth looking for the first Season on DVD if it's recommended here.

Oh God yes, it's bloody fab. (Series 1 better than Series 2 IMO, although Series 2 is hotting up.)

Thanks PW, it looks great but I couldn't tell from a couple of random episodes whether it had any substance IYKWIM. I am struggling to muster any enthusiasm for telly since I finished The Wire. Everything else seems so two dimensional.

Haven't seen the Wire (so exhausted by everyone telling me it's the best thing ever ) so can't comment on whether it's got much in common.

MM is basically a story about feminism/the changing role of women throughout the 50s and 60s. And the leading man (despite being a bastard) looks really hot in a suit.

Is that Don Draper? Agree he does look pretty hot.

Not a huge amount of feminism in The Wire but it is indeed the best thing ever

I loooooooooooove it! I have to watch it on iplayer though, sadly, as it's on too late.

There is a good plot guide on wikipedia which tells you all you need to know about season one (I also joined in season 2) but it does contain small spoilers, so if that bothers you then you might not want to read it.

I have caught up though, without too much trouble.

Ok, I'm convinced. I'm off to buy the Season 1 box set on Amazon and read the spoilers on Wiki . Thanks.

don't read spoiler! just watch and enjoy . it's just the best thing on tv ever (imo!) the clothes, the shoes, the hair and that's before the storylines

Haven't seen last night's yet but I gather Don gets up to something in California...

-SPOILER ALERT-

I LOVE that Betty's being so 'fuck you' about everything.

Hell yes, we watch it! It is absolutely brilliant. Have to intersperse it with The West Wing to cheer us up, though.

When is Don not up to something? I loathe him and fancy him at the same time.

I have to hug DH tighter when we watch it in gratitude that he is not like that.

but yet he's also so brilliant about Peggy and so righteous at work...

sigh...

he's just a wonderful good looking mass of handsome contradictions...

I think he is the most internally conflicted character I've ever seen in a television drama, and I really want some more back story to work out why he is like he is.

Love Peggy. Go, girl!

Love Don. But I never watch with DH around I don't want him getting any ideas. I love the clothes & the nasty, red head.

Ooh yes, Joan is a fantastic character.

I want to know what's happened with Roger and the beautiful secretary.

Ooo Joan is brilliant - a terrifying combination of steel and softness.

Much like her undergarments.

Do you think if I had a liberty bodice I could get a waist like hers? I think for max effect I would need someone to twizzle up my hair in the morning though.

Irrelevant fact of the day - she is actually a natural blonde and dies it red. As is Cynthia Nixon (Miranda in Sex and the City)

DYES

please don't tell pedants' corner or they will stand me in a corner and snip my buttons off.

In my defence I have had a glass of wine (or two)

Joan is wonderful.

Sorry about the sisterhood but Betty is so WET. She is doing the strong woman act now but it is too little too late !

Yes - my favourite telly programme at the moment.

did anyone grasp who it was that Don phoned towards the end of this week's episode(the number he wrote in the book?)

It's a fab programme
I have a soft spot for Roger Stirling

Report
Nancy66 · 23/04/2009 09:09

bigted - he asked to speak to a bloke and gave a false name. Something to do with his past I think - perhaps he gave his real name before he changed his identity.

Also - in the final pool scene when joy was snogging someone while Don watched - was it her dad?

Report
yappybluedog · 23/04/2009 09:17

no, I thought that was her dad's girlfriend

were the little kid's Joy's siblings?

Step-siblings I bet! I love the little references to things we take for granted that hadn't been developed yet like anti-perspirant for women!
Hope this isn't a spoiler but I loved the gay blokes comments the look on her face a picture!

Watched season 1 and enjoyed it so started recording season 2 but got so behind deleted them as realised that the characters are generally unsympathetic and I cared more about the lovely furniture & frocks.

Hows season 2 going? Shall I give it another go when it reaches DVD?

I absolutely love Mad Men. I am a bit obsessed with it actually.

The best review I read was talking about Don Draper and it said something like "Draper is so complex and multi-layered he makes Tony Soprano look like Bob The Builder".

It's just wonderful TV. Every time an episode ends, I think, "Wasn't that amazing?" and I think about it for days afterwards.
