BBC News 24 is being appalling on this. anyone know of another freeview station which is giving better coverage?

megcleary Tue 20-Jan-09 15:02:02

whats wrong with the bbc stuff?

Jux Tue 20-Jan-09 15:04:13

No atmosphere, rubbish camera angles, 3rd rate news/people talking even more vacuously than usual.

CrushaGrape Tue 20-Jan-09 15:08:24

They've started the coverage too early, is the problem, so they don't have enough quality people to fill all the time. I've been with it for an hour, but doing other stuff at the same time. I imagine it will get better from 4pm, when BBC1 starts broadcasting it too - I hope it will be more structured.

Jux Tue 20-Jan-09 15:10:44

Oh and no captions.

The BBC cover royal occasions so well, I'm astonished they're so bad now. If CNN were on freeview I'd be tuned in there.

Jux Tue 20-Jan-09 15:11:51

CrushaGrape, I'm doing other stuff too, but I was expecting something a bit more atmospheric. And I'd like to know who the talking heads are.

CrushaGrape Tue 20-Jan-09 15:15:41

i might turn it off for the next 45 mins. Does anyone know, is Sopel doing all the coverage, or can we expect Dimbleby from 4pm?

Wasn't June Sarpong annoying? I can't get my head around her; I don't know why. Is she considered a political pundit now because she used to date David Lammy or something?

Jux Tue 20-Jan-09 15:16:56

Who are these people coming down the steps? The chap with the braid and the old lady? I want a man with a nice voice saying "Oh and here come xx and xx, she's looking well for her years. Last seen doing something or other somewhere" and stuff like that. Instead I get some screechy lady babbling speculatively and saying they've all been working very hard.

Jux Tue 20-Jan-09 15:17:38

I stopped listening to Sarpong. She's not worth it.

Jux Tue 20-Jan-09 15:19:08

Ah now, men in elaborate headdresses dancing in the sun... that's more like it - we could have had quite a lot of that before.

Jux Tue 20-Jan-09 15:20:55

Show me the band in Freedom Square.

Jux Tue 20-Jan-09 15:21:27

Thank you. Can I listen to them or do I have to listen to Babbly-Head?

SaltireOShanter Tue 20-Jan-09 15:22:53

I do belive the lovely Huw is taking over at 4pm, I'm sure I heard him say this on the radio

Jux Tue 20-Jan-09 15:22:55

I give up. I'm going to bake cakes.

CrushaGrape Tue 20-Jan-09 15:25:24

Ah, it's Huw Edwards and Matt Frei from 4. Shame Channel 4 isn't doing coverage too; they're generally better at American issues than the Beeb, I feel.

I know what you mean about it being a bit feeble that they don't point out who the people arriving are. So many of the faces look familiar, but I'm not au fait enough with America's great and good to put names to all of them.

CrushaGrape Tue 20-Jan-09 15:26:57

I can't believe they're running the merchandise piece again. Thats it!! I'm following Jux and heading off for half an hour.

lottiejenkins Tue 20-Jan-09 16:14:54

Jux.......BBC1 has captions on their coverage now!!

MissAnthrope Tue 20-Jan-09 16:19:01

You can stream CNN online - have been switching between that and BBC. CNN far better

lottiejenkins Tue 20-Jan-09 17:03:00

jenk1 Tue 20-Jan-09 17:37:02

ive been watching it on Sky news with jeremy thompson, their coverage has been very good.

Jux Wed 21-Jan-09 21:54:29

Lottiejenkins, MissAnthrope, thanks for that - just saw your posts! When I said I was going off to bake cakes, I actually did!

Liked the digs at Dubya too.
