Really looking forward to this new bbc adaptation. The reviews I've seen up to now have been very complimentary. Cast also looks good.

Yes, me!

One of my favourite books, and the clips I've seen so far have really whetted my appetite.

I will try and watch this. Not sure what time it's on. I did read the book, years ago.

Yes! I've programmed the digital recorder for all the parts. It's a long time since I read the book.

Hmm, not sure. Never been a big Hardy fan, for some reason. Apart, maybe, from Jude the Obscure.

I'm not a big Hardy fan either. Will probably watch it though.

Jude the obscure had Christopher Ecclestone and that one from Titanic in I think.

That one from Titanic! I think you mean Kate Winslet!

Jeez, now Jude was a very tough film to watch. I had to turn it off when that terrible thing happened. I was traumatised!!

Now that was very good indeed. Gemma Arterton is very pretty isn't she? Sickening really!!

The guy who played Alec was suitably creepy and yet strangely attractive. Not sure about the fella playing Angel but we will see more of him next week, so too early to form an opinion.

Much much better than the last tv version which was on ITV a few years ago.

Beautifully filmed. I want to live in Tess's house. Yeah I know it was a hovel but these days it would be the rural idyll would it not?
Gemma thingummy very good I thought. Angel looks a bit too drippy. Alec - mmmm wouldnt mind giving him one!
BUT..........
a few niggles.. Tess should have been wearing a RED sash in the dancing scene at the start - very significant in the novel methinks so why change that detail, AND the D'Urberville house in the novel has a redbrick facade doesn't it? - again it may seem a mere detail but surely signifies the idea of 'falseness' .... I know, I'm nit picking, I really enjoyed the adaptation, but irritates me when they change things for no good reason.

Glad you liked except for the niggles! I too am unsure about Angel, he did look a bit drippy you are right. Hopefully we will be proved wrong next week!

I loved this, as I love the novel. I've loved every Thomas Hardy novel I've read. I studied Far From The Madding Crowd for GCSE English, and still love it which speaks volumes I think. (Unlike Haydn's Nelson Mass which I studied for A level music and now hate with a passion!)

I also saw the Jude The Obscure adaptation (haven't read the novel yet) and was traumatised by that event.

Is anyone watching The Tudors? The chap playing Alec d'Urberville is playing the Archibishop of Canterbury - he does has a shifty look about him and yet he's very attractive.

thought Alec was v. attractive and yes in a creepy way
kept thinking Tess' mum was going to say "tidy" (welsh accent) any minute

Love the book. Loved it tonight. Can't wait for next week. I agree Angel did look a bit drippy.
Can anyone help me out. The actor who plays Alec. What has he been in before. I'm sure he played a similar character. It's driving me nuts!!!!

Gave up watching about 40 mins in. I was just bored and felt it was too slow moving.

slow moving? getting raped moving back home then having a baby and losing all your friends?????

Twinklemegan · 14/09/2008 22:31

His name's Hans Matheson and I know I recognise him from something before The Tudors...

I just googled him. Apparently he played the lead in the ITV adaptation of Doctor Zhivago, which I think is where I recognise him from.

Re - The guy who plays Alec. I remember him from that Still Crazy film and also the ITV version of Dr Zhivago.

Why disappointing zippi?

I found the actress playing Tess a bit irritating. I know following Natassia (sp?) Kinski is a hard act to follow but, hmm, not sure. Agree that Alec was a bit of a fox though.
