Dragon's Den - Evan Davies, great on radio, but why is he on the telly?

Honestly, hugely clever of course, and I like him on Newsnight or telly when they film him from the side but really - face on on Dragon's den, I can't help but think, no woman living who looked that quirky would ever ever EVER get a presenting job on telly.
Same goes for the ubiquitous Andrew Marr, nice guy but not the greatest look for telly! I don't think we should be looksist but I think people can be telegenic without being perfect!!!!!

I don't understand it either... He is completely pointless on DD. There is just no need for a presenter at all. His post "Den" interviews are, frankly, cringeworthy

And he looks like Nookie Bear [showing my age emoticon]

hey ipanema, having been trying to find you and see how you are !! I like Evan, though agree there's no point to the DD after interviews

LOL at Nookie Bear

Yes, he has the perfect face for radio.

He looks like a cross between Nookie Bear and Kryten off Red Dwarf.

And this has been mentioned before, but he is apparently known throughout the BBC as 'Tinsel Tits' because he has nipple piercings.

I think he's cool.

His squint is a little distracting.

My god, if you were saying this about a woman there'd be uproar! What does it matter what he looks like, he's there to do a job. Get a grip

sorry, I like Andrew Marr and Evan Davies! Now Robert Peston is a different kettle of fish altogether...

Is your point that we should have intelligent women of unconventional beauty on tv? Or just that we should not allow anyone with uneven features in front of the telly? I'll suport the first, but not the second.

I'm really just talking about the sexism of it.

We would never have female mainstream presenters who looked as 'individual', shall we say, as Davis or Marr. I mean, they would not be considered acceptable for telly! I think that's unacceptable.

Of course it's perfectly legit for these 2 to be on telly on their merits but it does remind me that you don't get women presenting telly (regardless of their abilities) unless they're more visually attractive than these 2 brilliant, but beauty bypassed clever blokes.

Marr's fine on the radio and I can just about take him on telly if his scripts weren't so hysterical (witness Britain from above)

But Davis, Looking at the camera, I do actually think his looks are so distracting that it's hard to concentrate on what he's saying, pointlessly in DD as it happens...

He's totally brilliant on radio and fine on Newsnight preferably from the side.

I wouldn't be looksist about these blokes if I ever saw any woman who even began to compete with these two in the international Gargoyle Olympics.

Agree he's totally uncalled for on DD.

I hate it on when you see someone do their pitch and then one of the dragons makes an offer, and he goes:

"Duncan Balantyne has made XXX an offer of £50,000 for a 30% stake in the business."

I'm always shouting: "Yes I blardy know, we've just watched it."

As for the cross eyes, i reckon it's the weird cameraman who hides behind the pillars then runs up to him at 50miles an hour.

Think he is great at his job. And it is probably not his fault that quirky looking women don't get hired.

ipanemagirl · 04/09/2008 14:46

ClosedForCleaning I'm not saying either really, I'm saying that seeing such quirky male presenters irritates me because we don't see quirky female presenters in these kind of roles. They have to look more conventionally attractive, it's not negotiable. It just irritates me that's all. As does the fact that male newsreaders are allowed to age and female ones aren't.
Unlike in the US where they do have more older female anchors and presenters.

Upwind, I'm not blaming Davis at all, good on him, I"m just making an observation that's all! I'm not marching against ugly blokes. But to me they symbolise the inherent sexism in telly and I feel at liberty to be irritated by it and say so, no more no less.

Oh good god Tiredemma, that drives me insane too.

The endless recaps of facts which have just been shown about 2minutes before. FGS, we are BBC2 viewers, not goldfish!!

I find the recaps useful, largely because I am usually attending to chores while watching TV
