Dragon's Den - Evan Davies, great on radio, but why is he on the telly?

Honestly, hugely clever of course, and I like him on Newsnight or telly when they film him from the side but really - face on on Dragon's den, I can't help but think, no woman living who looked that quirky would ever ever EVER get a presenting job on telly.
Same goes for the ubiquitous Andrew Marr, nice guy but not the greatest look for telly! I don't think we should be looksist but I think people can be telegenic without being perfect!!!!!

I love him

I don't understand it either... He is completely pointless on DD. There is just no need for a presenter at all. His post "Den" interviews are, frankly, cringeworthy

And he looks like Nookie Bear [showing my age emoticon]

MaryAnnSingleton Wed 03-Sep-08 22:39:50

hey ipanema, having been trying to find you and see how you are !! I like Evan, though agree there's no point to the DD after interviews

TurkeyLurkey Wed 03-Sep-08 22:40:47

LOL at Nookie Bear grin

Yes, he has the perfect face for radio.

Botbot Wed 03-Sep-08 22:53:13

He looks like a cross between Nookie Bear and Kryten off Red Dwarf.

And this has been mentioned before, but he is apparently known throughout the BBC as 'Tinsel Tits' because he has nipple piercings.

I think he's cool.

His squint is a little distracting.

My god, if you were saying this about a woman there'd be uproar! What does it matter what he looks like, he's there to do a job. Get a grip

think he's marvellous and one of the few broadcasters who's good on radio and tv

florenceuk Thu 04-Sep-08 11:30:50

sorry, I like Andrew Marr and Evan Davies! Now Robert Peston is a different kettle of fish altogether...

tiredemma Thu 04-Sep-08 11:31:15

He's got a great face for radio.

bundle Thu 04-Sep-08 11:31:40

don't get me started on Peston.....

ClosedForCleaning Thu 04-Sep-08 11:34:54

Is your point that we should have intelligent women of unconventional beauty on tv? Or just that we should not allow anyone with uneven features in front of the telly? I'll suport the first, but not the second.

ipanemagirl Thu 04-Sep-08 14:33:50

I'm really just talking about the sexism of it.

We would never have female mainstream presenters who looked as 'individual', shall we say, as Davis or Marr. I mean, they would not be considered acceptable for telly! I think that's unacceptable.

Of course it's perfectly legit for these 2 to be on telly on their merits but it does remind me that you don't get women presenting telly (regardless of their abilities) unless they're more visually attractive than these 2 brilliant, but beauty bypassed clever blokes.

Marr's fine on the radio and I can just about take him on telly if his scripts weren't so hysterical (witness Britain from above)

But Davis, Looking at the camera, I do actually think his looks are so distracting that it's hard to concentrate on what he's saying, pointlessly in DD as it happens...

He's totally brilliant on radio and fine on Newsnight preferably from the side.

I wouldn't be looksist about these blokes if I ever saw any woman who even began to compete with these two in the international Gargoyle Olympics.

ipanemagirl Thu 04-Sep-08 14:36:00

Dr George, your point was exactly my point!! You DON"T see women like this ever presenting TV!!!

ipanemagirl Thu 04-Sep-08 14:37:07

hello! Thanks for your message!
No news... 2 weeks to go... hope it doesn't come early I'm not ready, want to hide under the bed....... all too scary, forgotten how to do babies etc.....
How are you?

MaryAnnSingleton Thu 04-Sep-08 14:38:49

fine thank you ! it looks as though I'm stalking you on different threads - hadn't seen you about for a few days and wondered whether you were busy giving birth !!
Am off shortly to meet my boy half way home from big school...

ipanemagirl Thu 04-Sep-08 14:41:09

Spent yesterday on the Maestro thread I'm afraid... I love that programme.
I'll have to hunt for you too, do you scuttlebug sometimes? Or word game?
Have you see La Tnog about? I can't find her.

PuppyMonkey Thu 04-Sep-08 14:42:05

Agree he's totally uncalled for on DD.

I hate it on when you see someone do their pitch and then one of the dragons makes an offer, and he goes:

"Duncan Balantyne has made XXX an offer of £50,000 for a 30% stake in the business."

I'm always shouting: "Yes I blardy know, we've just watched it." hmm

As for the cross eyes, i reckon it's the weird cameraman who hides behind the pillars then runs up to him at 50miles an hour.

Upwind Thu 04-Sep-08 14:45:03

Think he is great at his job. And it is probably not his fault that quirky looking women don't get hired.

ipanemagirl Thu 04-Sep-08 14:46:08

ClosedForCleaning I'm not saying either really, I'm saying that seeing such quirky male presenters irritates me because we don't see quirky female presenters in these kind of roles. They have to look more conventionally attractive, it's not negotiable. It just irritates me that's all. As does the fact that male newsreaders are allowed to age and female ones aren't.
Unlike in the US where they do have more older female anchors and presenters.

tiredemma Thu 04-Sep-08 14:46:15

I wonder how much he gets paid for standing around that warehouse, waiting to repeat what we already know??

ipanemagirl Thu 04-Sep-08 14:48:19

Upwind, I'm not blaming Davis at all, good on him, I"m just making an observation that's all! I'm not marching against ugly blokes. But to me they symbolise the inherent sexism in telly and I feel at liberty to be irritated by it and say so, no more no less.

JuneBugJen Thu 04-Sep-08 14:48:19

Oh good god Tiredemma, that drives me insane too.

The endless recaps of facts which have just been shown about 2minutes before. FGS, we are BBC2 viewers, not goldfish!!
