Please help me find something soothing and engaging. I can't find anything on Netflix, Prime or BBCiPlayer and am in great need for some wonderful escapism.

If there's nowt, would I be unreasonable to start DA all over again?

YANBU. I might do the same myself.

Love DA!

I've just rewatched it, I'm on the last but one episode.
Then I can watch the film, finally!

I'd rewatch. But I love DA.

Completely different style of show but my go to escapism is The Good Place.

Gosford Park. Great cast and also by Julian Fellowes (I think).

The Duchess is a good film of a similar era. Don't know if it's still on Netflix but we watched Poldark last year.

Call The Midwife and Father Brown are my additional two comfort programmes. Call The Midwife can be a little too tear jerking at times though!!!

The Durrells was good comfort tv for me during a tough patch.

Downton Abbey is my favourite and nothing quite beats it. Similar programmes that I have enjoyed:

Mr Selfridge
Poldark
The Crown
Call the Midwife (not exactly Downton Abbey but very interesting)

I enjoyed Belgravia which was also by JF.
Maybe The Crown?
And as PPs have said Call the Midwife, Mr Selfridge, Poldark, Call the Durrells.

Upstairs Downstairs. Both the original soap opera and the new movies. Almost identical plot points based around the history of the time, and the daily lives and lives of the families both upstairs and downstairs.

Also Below Deck LOL

The Duchess is a good film of a similar era.

I wouldn’t say the latter. It must be set in the 1700s.

Yeah I like The Duchess but I suspect there is a good 150 years between that and Downton!

Ha glad someone else pointed that out - we are closer to DA time now than it is to the Duchess!
OP, yes you'd probably like the Durrels, Upstairs Downstairs, or most of the Jane Austen adaptations which are on various places. I just watched sanditon (ITV player) which was good. Mr Selfridge is set at the same time as Downton too. Bridgerton? Poldark? I like a lot of historical dramas but lots of them are a bit dark/violent so not what you're after if you want nice/soothing!

Enola Holmes on Netflix is great. I liked the recent updated versions of Emma and Great Expectations too.

I'd love to see an Upstairs Downstairs / Downton Abbey kind of series that was more gritty and realistic. The difference yet proximity of different classes would be fascinating with lots of scope for plenty of storylines.

House of Elliott
Monarch of the Glen
To the Manor born

  • not recent dramas but good ‘Sunday evening viewing’

(Not sure if they’re on Netflix, iplayer etc)

Victoria with Jenna Coleman in the lead role . Some of it veers madly from real life but it’s easy on the eye
