hmm... neighbours: Is it actually possible to have a kidney transplant by keyhole surgery?

fryalot · 29/11/2007 14:38

surely they couldn't get it out of a keyhole sized hole in a good enough condition to put it in someone else's body?

I know there are more important things in the world to be worrying about, but....

as long as Karl Kennedy did the operation then all should be fine.

oh sorry he's not a doctor at the moment is he?

perhaps Australians in soaps have very small keyhole shaped kidneys?

Report
fryalot · 29/11/2007 14:41

never considered the fact that their kidneys may be a different shape to ours.

Any ozzies out there can confirm or deny this rumour?

perhaps it's something to do with the hole in the ozone layer? does groovy stuff with your internal organs.

all the oz based ozzies will be asleep won't they?

Squonk, you make me lol.

I am pretty sure the kidney removal is a huge op, and they practiaclly have to cut you in half. Is def more risky than putting one in, tho that never made any sense to me either as surely they have to remove your old one to put the new one in????

I wondered about that too, Squonk.

Not enough to start a thread, though

WAKE UP AND CHECK OUT YOUR KIDNEYS

not any more

Presumably though, if you're removing a duff kidney in order to put one in the end result is that you feel better, whereas removing a perfectly good kidney is unlikely to improve your general sense of well-being.

The kidney can be removed from the donor by keyhole surgery but not the transplant

Report
PrettyCandles · 29/11/2007 14:47

They don't take out the old kidney, just disconnect it.

Not seen the episode, but I imagine they had it by keyhole surgery because the actor's agent wouldn't allow them to be in hospital for more than one episode. Got ot get them back out in the sunshine, flicking their golden locks bla bla bla

fryalot · 29/11/2007 14:47

how though? presumably to get it out of a keyhole sized hole you have to squish it which would make it useless to put in the donee?

Wow, noddy.

(I thought Squonk meant the whole transplant op.)

Maybe ozzie keys are a diiferent size and shape?

Lucycat · 29/11/2007 14:49

so just how big is your kidney then noddy?

I've seen pigs kidneys in the butchers and thought they seemed small...are ours the same then?

you dont have one remvoed to get a transplant. some people have 3/4/5 kidnys - dep on no. of trnsplants! you get one removed if its infected, tho, or polycystic ie enormous

the donor is always far worse/more ill. stays longer in hospital. theyve had an organ removed after all. the recipinet is better the minute they connect the blood supply

Report
BandofMothers · 29/11/2007 14:50

Gosh do they really leave the old one in there, but if they disconnect it doesn't it die??? And doesn't that sort of cause problems??

Have never thought about this in much depth before, I just remember watching Steel Magnolia's and they said the donor's op was much harsher.

Report
nailpolish · 29/11/2007 14:51

the dont disconnect the old one

the new one is transplanted underneath it

Lucycat · 29/11/2007 14:52

at them leaving bits of dead kidney inside you.

mn is truly an educational place I never knew that

BandofMothers · 29/11/2007 14:52

I guess purple is right, running on one would sort of slow you down a bit. but then isn't the recipient also running on one, I mean, if you can live on one, then they would both have to be failing to get a replacement I mean why take one and leave someone with one to give someone else 2.
Now I'm thinking too much.

Going out now to get som efresh air

nailpolish · 29/11/2007 14:52

its not dead

it just doesnt work very well

its not idsconnected so still has a blood supply

Report
BandofMothers · 29/11/2007 14:53

nailpolish, really?? So do they sort of connect it to the old one to kind of piggy back, I have def heard that term before.

Well the donor looked very well on today's episode, and is going home in two days. However, no doubt the fact that Elle has told him she is going to forget about him will give him a setback of some sort.

Squonk - might have known it would be you who started this one .

lol squonk - I didn't even blink at the 'keyhole surgery' line ... just presumed (typical me).

BTW - what has happened to ~Rosetta (the actress) as she has done a midnight flit to Italy with no big farewell palarva (which is usual neighbours style??!)
