When he tours again Nathaniel Halls show First Time is absolutely fantastic, you can buy the play, but that of course just isn’t the same as being at a show.

Yes. I preferred the original title The Boys as so many who died were just boys but understand why they had to change it (show on prime had the name already).
I loved Years and years and Queer as Folk. I was 16 when the iceberg John Hurt narrated ads came out. Amazed I had a sex life at all and still think that campaign stayed with me, such that I had three back-to-back years-long relationships rather than experimenting (the ads supposedly reduced STDs in general but history forgets that gay men had already had to get the word out because Thatcher and Reagan saw them as expendable. Don't get me started on James Anderton).
It will be interesting how the series deals with it - from what I understand it is steering away from political/historical-driven and more towards the personal stories of the fictional characters in the 80s with the backdrop of AIDS/advent of that epidemic, for which there is still no vaccine (scientific reasons why but nonetheless four decades on and still relying on antiretrovirals, PEP and PrEP, meds a lottery - women of colour adversely affected now).
So yes, I hope the series is able to bring a spotlight on the virus as Covid-19 has meant that many of the HIV targets sadly won't be met.
I like RTD's work in general - it has heart - and although I don't necessarily agree that gay characters should be exclusively played by gay actors (although I loved Boys in the band on Netflix) I do think that representation is important.

No, I have seen the first episode and a few clips from others, you could let her watch it but she would probably rather watch it without a parent present. Being 13 and watching a sex scene with your mum/dad is very awkward for most children.

From what i remember (i was 12 in 1985) 1980s There was an undercurrent that you were somehow more "worthy" if you caught HIV through infected blood in a transfusion rather than through sex
2020s. If you catch Covid from your workplace you are seen as more "worthy" than if you have caught it because you have hugged someone.
Earlier this week on the ITV News there was an ICU nurse saying "its because people wont stay at home"

I would happily pay to view it online Simon but don't think it's been filmed? I saw the book for 9.99 but you're right, it's not the same as seeing it on stage. It breaks me that Nathaniel contracted HIV in 2003. That was when my first baby was born. It was also finally when England repealed the vile, reprehensible Clause 28 (which tbh I totally ignored as a teacher). The homophobia was still rife though - I mentored one young, gay teen who, I kid you not, was advised by senior management not to be so ''blatant'' about his sexuality. You still had kids using gay as a pejorative adjective and Ali G with 'batty boy' etc no wonder shame and stigma was still the default.

It was mercy - the 4H club was reported in the media (haemophiliacs, homosexuals, heroin-addicts and the incorrectly-identified Haitians as high-risk groups; they were also going to go with hookers but the data didn't correspond). Hamophiliacs like Ryan White had a lot of sympathy - others didn't. Not that Ryan White's mum endorsed that, she was an ally, who had had lots of advice and support from the gay community. But the fear, stigma and media-generated headlines at the time were utterly horrendous - gay plague was used incessantly.

You'd hope that with the U=U campaigning things would be different but they did a US poll recently and half of Americans still think they have to be 'careful' around people living with HIV 'to avoid catching it' (Aug 2020) and even in Sweden there was a poll whereby first-aiders would be less happy about doing CPR so the stigma is very much still there in spite of medical advances making it a manageable albeit chronic condition for first world countries.

Did anyone else watch Cucumber? Which was also Russell T Davies I believe, and that was brilliant, although some scenes were gut wrenching to watch, it's one of the best tv shows I think I've seen. Not sure if it's still available anywhere but would highly recommend. Might be on 4oD.
