Anyone watching this. I can’t see a thread.
Similar format the GBBO I think. Except it’s on the BBC.

We had it on last night although I think HH's soft spot for Angela Hartnett may have influenced our viewing choices Grin

I thought it was excellent. The right person went home I think.

Yes I loved it. They made things I could attempt. I’m not so keen on Angela Hartnett but always enjoy Mary. Nice to see a range of ages taking part too.

Have just come looking for a thread for this. I've been really enjoying it, but I need to rant about how it does my head in that they are stuck using electric hobs!

I came on here to start a thread about this!
I'm really enjoying it - the first series was a bit weird but I think they've got the format & chemistry correct now. Love Angela Hartnett.
The range of people taking part is great, like GBBO in the old days (take note, C4).

I think Robin's days are numbered... he was luck to survive this week.

Yes I enjoyed it too, the last series wasn't quite right. as you said Christina I liked that they were making brunch which is something we all make at diferent times. I wasn't sure about most of the meals having tons of chilli and that poor bloke who made baked eggs and mushrooms was told he hadn't used enough spices, that's a subjective thing isn't it?

Especially as the judges' palates would be blunted by the heavy spicing of the others' dishes.

I somehow missed the last series entirely. I’m warming to Angela Hartnett as she’s not as abrasive as I found her on a Great British Menu. I also like Claudia Winkelmann’s clothes.
I thought the ovens seems a bit technical for me as, was it Susie, forgot to set hers properly the first week. I thought you just had to turn an oven on 😁 pointing to the right number.

I love it too! I find it strangely soothing to watch.

Countmeout Oh I reckon since GGBO that ovens are much more complex now (i even find the fan and timer oh my old thing difficult) I ignore them!

Computerisation doesn't seem to have made life much simpler IMO!

No silly me Blush GBBO !!!!

ppeatfruit I don't know if you've ever been to the States but I've cooked in a few self-catering places there and American ovens absolutely stump me, and I'm talking about standard, non-computerised ones. It's not just that they use farenheit (sp?) - I can't actually say WHAT it is that so baffles me.

You'd think the researchers would be on hand to sort out technical stuff. (On TV cooking shows, not my holidays! Grin )

Oh, and the other great thing about BHC: it's a BBC food prog with NO GREGGGGGG !!!

Report
ppeatfruit · 20/01/2020 12:28

Yes we've been to the States many years ago, we stayed in a self catering place for one night and got delivered in food because dh, couldn't sort out the cooker either! Though we're old and DO understand Fahenheit !! Grin

Yes I agree about Greg etc. I've never liked MC.

Anyone else enjoy last nights? I liked the rustle it up with the chicken something I’d try quite often, like Elisabetta I would have been disappointed there was no pasta as a pasta bake would be my go to. The risotto was terribly colourless surely something could have been added. I wouldn’t have enjoyed the birthday cake making and would class it as baking not really a home cook as such.

I’ve just watched it on catch up. Georgia annoying me by talking about ‘guac’ !

Not warming to Georgia at all, she really failed the birthday cake brief with the second cake. No child would want that!

My son is gluten and dairy free and even I have made him much nicer cakes than that!

I’m up feeding a newborn so frankly I’ll watch anything (with subtitles) to keep me alert but I’m enjoying this too. Really nice bunch of contestants but I think Sarah gets very little air time. Georgia seems like a really talented cook but I envy how slender she is

Have just caught up... shame for Elisabetta as I think Oli should have gone - he's not as good a cook as she is and also is a bit annoying
Also I get the impression that Georgia (lovely though she is) is used to being praised as she can't quite cope when things go wrong. She is young though.
It was funny when none of them wanted to talk to Claudia during the steak challenge. I'd be like that for all the challenges as I hate people chatting to me when I'm cooking.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 26/01/2020 17:04

I liked that too! More natural than GBBO. And I loved Claudia’s comment when she went back into the judges room and said no one would talk to her. Mary said ‘they just want an arm round them’ and CW said ‘nope’ or words to that effect 😆. And Mary said ‘really?’ 😆

I love it and think the contestants are better than those most recently on GBBO and many on Masterchef.

I don't like judge Chris, I'm sure he is a nice man and all that, but he knows so very little compared with Mary Berry and Angela Hartnett. I find him rather thick and he just isn't required.

Some of the challenges are a bit confused as to whether they want something restaurant standard or home cooked.

I love CW and the contestants though - Elisabeta had more to give, I was sorry she went after that beautiful cake in the first challenge. Removing basic items from the store cupboard I think is really mean- it doesn't happen in any other cookery programme.

Report
Juliette20 · 27/01/2020 04:36

Also the criticism about not using stock (levelled at nearly all the contestants) in the chicken challenge by Angela was a bit harsh.

They had one hour to make something with left over chicken. Who apart from a trained chef (and even then, how many would) would think of making stock in a pressure cooker and that they would have time to do that and make something like a risotto. That was a bit ridiculous.

I really like leftover style challenges. Having lots of expensive ingredients isn't much of a challenge and it really makes cooks think more creatively with a pared back cupboard of ingredients. Although I found the lack of plain flour weird.

TheQueef · 27/01/2020 08:00

Only just found this, love love love Angela (if I could be a lesbian she would be my crush) enjoyed Claudia and her scattergun approach.

Report
ChristinaRussell · 27/01/2020 12:21

Yes, no plain flour is definitely odd. I'm more likely to not have SR than plain. And I would never think I could make stock plus a meal in an hour. I'm a pretty consistent home cook but don't own a pressure cooker; wouldn't actually have a clue how to use one! So I agree that was mean.
However I do love the way CW and MB have a hug when they see each other. The chemistry between them all is very good. who needs Paul Hollywood
