I’ve just watched this - Has anyone else? I’m off to google to see how true to life it is. I adored it!! I even liked the slightly wobbly editing, I assume that was deliberate. Anthony Hopkins as usual is totally believable and brilliant as Ratzinger.

Yes - it was great. Haven't enjoyed a film as much for a long time. Anthony Hopkins was amazing. DH cried... (not unusual!)

Absolutely loved it - amazing characterisation & an acting masterclass from Hopkins & Pryce 👍🏼

Funnily enough, it was my NYD film too. Adored it and would really recommend.

Absolutely loved this.

Not factually true in their meetings however the characterisations and back stories seemed pretty accurate.

Brilliant performances from both Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce.

Just watched this and came looking for a thread about it so I could join in the enthusing. It's really good! Fabulous writing and acting.

I wasn't sure about this before I watched it, but it was bloomin brilliant and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I watched it and really enjoyed it even though it normally wouldn’t be something I would bother with, that’s why I enjoy Netflix so much. I also googled a lot after but I do that for everything. Another one to try is Messiah it’s a series (I thought it was a movie at first). It’s really interesting, a little slow to start but really good overall.

Embarrassingly I thought this would be dull as hell ... but it was amazing. The acting by the two leads was spell-binding.

Maybe I gave up to soon, I didn't like it. Messiah on the other hand I really enjoyed.

Slow start

I hadn’t known about the military rule and detentions/torture/murder/child thefts in Argentina: horrifying.

Got better as it went through.

I loved it!

I know it's not factually accurate, but I think the characterisation was superb - and actually I really liked the bits they added which were obviously not true to life (the two Popes watching football match, for instance), as it made them seem so human (and fallible).

Thank you for the tip about "Messiah", people - I watched a few minutes and thought "No - not for me.", but it sounds as though it is worth staying with at least for the entire first episode.

Lovely film, though a little plodding at times. AH and JP were fantastic.

I really enjoyed this movie mainly because the writing is excellent, my favourite part was ths first conversation the 2 popes had in the garden. Especially the discussion on the child abuse scandal.

We listened to their confessions then moved them on to another parish, where they started all over again.......Confession cleans the soul of the sinner but it does not help the victim

That line hit a nerve with me.
