Is anyone else planning to watch this six part series? I vaguely remembered the killings and on seeing this advertised have now lost hours to reading up about it online and have also downloaded a book about the case. I’m really looking forward to this one!

Cressida Bonas was very, very good, wasn't she.

DH is Welsh and he was a bit hmm about the accent, although I love Stephen Graham, he can do no wrong!!
I thought Freddie Fox as Jeremy was very good, ditto the stunning Cressida Bonas.

As I said upthread it's based on a well researched factual book so it won't be making a case for JBs innocence as he was found guilty.

AlexaAmbidextra Thu 09-Jan-20 02:24:04

it's based on a well researched factual book

Well it isn’t based on a factual book as Carol Anne Lee surmises as do the rest of us. The only person that is in possession of the facts is Jeremy Bamber.

@Supersimkin2, that's quite a partial view though (as these things so often are); even Wikipedia gives quite a different impression:

After school Bamber's father financed a trip to Australia and New Zealand and a scuba diving course. While in New Zealand, Bamber broke into a jewellery shop and stole two expensive watches, one of which he gave to a girlfriend back in Britain. He also boasted, according to Claire Powell, that he had been involved in smuggling heroin overseas. One of his cousins said Bamber ended up leaving New Zealand in a hurry, because friends of his had been involved in an armed robbery.

He returned to the UK to work in restaurants and bars, which included working as a waiter in a Little Chef on the A12, but later agreed to return home and work on his father's farm. Although he reportedly resented the low wages, he was given a car and lived rent-free in a cottage his father owned at 9 Head Street, Goldhanger, 3½ miles from his family's farmhouse at White House Farm. He also owned eight percent of his family's caravan site, Osea Road Camp Sites Ltd., in Maldon, Essex.

A few weeks before the murders Bamber trashed and robbed the family business at Osea Road Caravan Park. This was only revealed after the murders when he was forced to admit to the robbery after girlfriend Julie Mugford came forward as a witness against him.

What were the 'injections' that Shelia said the parents were making her have ?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel Thu 09-Jan-20 07:45:10

I grew up in the area too.

I agree with Trewser, it's very badly written. Watching the Christine Keeler drama the night before really shows up the differences between good and bad writing.
But Cressida Bonas and Freddie Fox are excellent.

Trewser Thu 09-Jan-20 07:47:52

If anyone is interested in knowing more without having to watch that painful show for 6 weeks, I highly recommend the They Walk Among Us podcast. Uk true crime, very well written, usually a different case every episode but they spend three episodes on the White House Farm case. It's a great little podcast.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman Thu 09-Jan-20 07:58:07

I Iived in the area when the crime took place. It was the first time that I really twigged how people who live in towns can sometimes view us yokels. I remember reading an article which bound on about 'the country folk, their innocence corrupted by the gabbling TV in the corner of the room...' I was hmmconfused

It was all over the local papers as well. Really horrible tragic story. The fact that the boys' father was consulted makes me more inclined to watch it.

misspiggy19 Thu 09-Jan-20 08:09:13

*There are a lot of people who believe bamber is innocent, he has quite a following!*

^Yeah middle aged, desperate women.

AlexaAmbidextra Thu 09-Jan-20 08:14:06

Yeah middle aged, desperate women.

I think he’s innocent and I’m not a desperate, middle-aged woman. Neither are Peter Tatchell, Andrew Hunter or Dr Dennis Eady.

Equanimitas Thu 09-Jan-20 08:31:03

I’m no supporter of Jeremy Bamber and I have no idea whether he’s innocent or guilty

He was convicted at trial and has made a number of attempts at appealing, all of which have failed. I'm going to go with guilty.

ineedaholidaynow Thu 09-Jan-20 08:39:10

Supersimkin2 what do you mean by as they were adopted they didn’t have any extended family?

Supersimkin2 Thu 09-Jan-20 09:34:45

Well, the only family they had were the Bamber parents and Mrs B's sister and her DD. There wasn't a safe haven away from the barmy Mrs B and the controlling Nevill.

Supersimkin2 Thu 09-Jan-20 09:38:10

Of course I'm being partial. I think JB did it, don't get me wrong. But victims don't have to be nice people, and his parents weren't always lovely. Sheila's psychiatrist said she had a decent motive for killing the mother too.

ineedaholidaynow Thu 09-Jan-20 09:40:29

But not having extended family is completely separate to the fact they were adopted. I couldn’t understand the link.

FagAsh Thu 09-Jan-20 09:48:06

@Supersimkin2
Did you know them?
Just watched this now

(I also think it was a hitman)

dirtyrottenscoundrel Thu 09-Jan-20 09:51:15

How can any woman want a relationship with a man who killed his entire family, including 2 young children?
apparently many do.
Totally fucked up.

Elderflower14 Thu 09-Jan-20 11:17:07

An old boss of mines best friend was JBs girlfriend before Julie Mugford...

AutumnRose1 Thu 09-Jan-20 17:24:38

I watched about ten minutes and it seemed like a lot of fluff....does it get better?

ineedaholidaynow Thu 09-Jan-20 17:50:34

The murders have happened so I assume the rest will be the investigation

AutumnRose1 Thu 09-Jan-20 18:15:33

Well, not necessarily...I think it’s the style of it. They might do lots of flashbacks etc. I think I’ll leave it.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor Thu 09-Jan-20 23:43:56

Steven Graham's accentconfused

ineedaholidaynow Thu 09-Jan-20 23:54:06

AlexaAmbidextra who do you think did it?

AlexaAmbidextra Fri 10-Jan-20 02:10:56
