Thanks Kannet 👍

SapatSea Wed 20-Nov-19 10:06:57

Thanks Kannet

The pub seems to have developed the Soap phenomenon of expanding walls. I'm pretty sure when Fabrice (Jenny's french boyfriend) wanted to stay at the pub, Alec said he could have "the spare room." Alec also stayed in "the spare room" when he had fallen out with Bet. However, we now have Bet, Raquel and Vicky all with their own room and Vicky's new boyfriend being offered the small back bedroom to stay in overnight.

x2boys Wed 20-Nov-19 16:24:44

That's very true Sapat , I forgot Raquel lived there too ,I wish my house ,developed new room,s as and when required!

justthecat Wed 20-Nov-19 16:43:40

See Ivy’s lips have made their appearance

Redglitter Wed 20-Nov-19 16:56:17

I've never understood the layout of the living area at the Rovers. The building is the same size upstaira and downstairs when you look at it from the street. If that's the case the first floor footprint would be the same as the bar/living room/kitchen - absolutely massive - or am I missing something glaringly obvious

x2boys Wed 20-Nov-19 17:17:12

Well was watching a very old episode from the 70,s the rovers than had a decent size function room ,it was somebody,s wedding and there were lots t guests all sitting eating the wedding breakfast ,so god know,s what's happened to that space?confused

x2boys Wed 20-Nov-19 17:17:56

I was*

TheSquitz Wed 20-Nov-19 19:04:14

Just checking in.

cherrytree63 Wed 20-Nov-19 23:13:38

@justthecat yes I had a double take at Ivy's lips , looks like she's blown her face up with a bicycle pump grin

x2boys Thu 21-Nov-19 09:36:21

Those lips!shock

Rock4please Thu 21-Nov-19 14:27:22

I am liking the Maud Grimes equity release plot. I think she is a very plausible character - tough but vulnerable. It was an awful thing to do to Maureen, who has basically sacrificed so much of her life for her mother, but you can see how she felt bullied and scared and backed into a corner. She is putting on a brave face but genuinely distrusts Reg and fears being put into a home or locked away in the tiny annex.

Mavis and Derek are also brilliant. The story line about Derek missing the coach, falling asleep at school, the burglary, the consequences, his wallowing in self-pity and taking it out on Mavis, are classic Corrie. The tragedy and the disappointments of everyday life and relationships. But everybody just gets on with it, as what are the alternatives?

x2boys Thu 21-Nov-19 14:36:22

Yes the story between Maureen and Maud is good, but how long was Maud,s mortgage for? Maureen been paying it for 25 years every month she did and presumably Maud and her husband lived there before and were paying it is it a never ending mortgage confused

thenightsky Thu 21-Nov-19 14:42:26

I'd forgotten the Maud/equity release thing. It was so sad when Maud told Maureen she could manage perfectly well on her own and Maureen said 'you could have told me that 23 years ago' sad

justthecat Thu 21-Nov-19 15:00:31

Another Dingle !

DangerousCurves Fri 22-Nov-19 09:58:00

Not just Ivy's lips, her cheeks looked very puffy too! Oh dear grin

x2boys Fri 22-Nov-19 11:53:50

Yes it wasent a good look for Ivy ,I'm not surprised the producers , were not happy , Oh dear Raquel he's just not that into you !

Onetraumaatatimeplease Fri 22-Nov-19 13:16:11

I've got to catch up. I'm a few weeks behind. I believe that it all started to go wrong in (the lady who played) ivy's life at this point. I've watched a few scenes with her in and I can tell the woman is smashed.

SapatSea Fri 22-Nov-19 13:29:39

justthecat well spotted, Mandy Dingle, so young! But why is Bettabuys taking on more staff when they have just made Maureen and others redundant?

Maureen is daffy but I do feel sorry for her. Maud should think on about her dd's happiness but Reggie would be a hard pill to swallow.

Loving Tanya's outfits. I remember dressing like that, floaty long viscose skirts and comfy loose long tops and cardis.

thenightsky Fri 22-Nov-19 16:04:57

God, Ivy looks like she's been smacked hard in the gob! shock

TheSquitz Fri 22-Nov-19 16:14:56

Steve is beginning to acquire the paunch we all know and love.

x2boys Fri 22-Nov-19 16:27:18

Yes I said on the other thread Ivy always seems half cut to me ,she sounds like she's slurring her words , I believe her son was diagnosed with Aids at this time ,well it said Aids in the article I read so I'm not sure wether it was HIV+ or Aids ? And if course there was the episode of The Word she appeared on!

x2boys Fri 22-Nov-19 16:29:20

Yes I remember dressing like Tanya too only I teemed them with Doc Marten boots grin

ConfCall Fri 22-Nov-19 20:02:30

Lynne Perrie’s autobiography is fascinating. She was - at that time- in a joyless marriage, her son had been diagnosed with HIV, she wasn’t getting on with Geoff Hinsliff. I can see why she went off the rails. She clearly thought that she was pals with lots of her colleagues, but I read that Helen Worth and Warren Jackson were the only cast members who turned up to her funeral. In fairness, she wasn’t very nice about a lot of them - she loathed Chloe Newsome, she disparaged Elizabeth Dawn’s marriage, bitched about Betty Driver, criticised Warren Jackson for not mentoring newbie kids, criticised Kevin Kennedy’s looks, and alleged that Julie Goodyear had wanted to have a fling with her. An explosive book.

Steve has aged five years overnight.

Would the estate agent/solicitor not have checked that the Holdsworths were authorised to sell the house? Is that not something they do? I haven’t moved for nearly 20 years but I recall having to provide lots of paperwork.

Eva Pope left to have her daughter in “94 I think. We’ll only be seeing shots of her behind the bar and sitting at the table, soon! Great character, well acted, I’ll miss her.

I loathe Maud. Selfish. I can’t drum up much sympathy. Another well-acted character though. I like her scenes with Percy.

SapatSea Sat 23-Nov-19 14:31:52

conofcall interesting. Seems mean to call out the child cators (Chloe and Warren)

What is happening at Deirdre's? I know she reportedly had to suddenly go look after her mother, are TraceyLuv ad Craig living it large in her house?

x2boys Sat 23-Nov-19 15:21:19

I think this was when the actress in real life was being treated for Cancer ?.I don't think TracyLuv and Craig are in it at present ?I think when Deirdre returns she will be going to Morrocco and meeting the lovely Samir!

ConfCall Sat 23-Nov-19 15:31:47

I remember Ken giving Samir a book about the local area. Strange, the things you recall.

WheresThatCatGoneNow Sat 23-Nov-19 18:42:47

Oh yes! I remember Samir blush

I also remember the hoo-hah about the pronunciation of his name.

For the first few weeks, Deirdre (and everyone else) were calling him Shamir until the tabloids got involved, and pointed out that this was incorrect.

Does anyone else remember that? grin

TheSquitz Sat 23-Nov-19 19:40:08

Samir was really hot (my memories may have got a bit warped).

x2boys Sun 24-Nov-19 08:32:18

I didn't think Samir was particularly hot but beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose! No.I can't remember the miss pronunciation of his name shall look forward to that storyline 😂

WheresThatCatGoneNow Sun 24-Nov-19 11:20:20

The mispronunciation of his name wasn't part of a storyline, it was just that Deirde started off calling him Shamir, and then suddenly changed it to Samir.

You probably won't notice it when it happens, but the papers were full of it at the time!

TheSquitz Sun 24-Nov-19 12:43:07

In fairness, x2boys I googled Samir and in fact he was the anti-hot. Told ypu my memories were playing tricks. Although compared to Ken...

x2boys Sun 24-Nov-19 12:56:19

Well.yes I suppose compared to Ken anyone would seem hot!grin

justthecat Sun 24-Nov-19 13:26:30

Even Reg ?!!

x2boys Sun 24-Nov-19 14:01:05

True @justthecat, I think I would prefer Percy ( even though he looked just like my Grandad ) over Reg .

SapatSea Sun 24-Nov-19 14:31:35

Reg, is loathesome. Don makes my flesh creep. None of the men on Corrie are alluring. Martin at present is probably the best of a very bad bunch, at least he looks after his DC and shares tasks with Gail.

WheresThatCatGoneNow Sun 24-Nov-19 15:12:57

I definitely wouldn't kick Kevin out of bed, though....

Then and Now blush !!

ConfCall Sun 24-Nov-19 17:14:25

Tracy Brabin as Tricia! Tracy is an MP now. I can’t remember much about her storylines.

x2boys Sun 24-Nov-19 17:28:20

Me neither other than the storyline with Terry Duckworth ...

DangerousCurves Mon 25-Nov-19 15:20:23

Knew I recognised little Jamie, its Eli Dingle

justthecat Mon 25-Nov-19 15:41:20

Wheresthatcatgonenow- I hoped your lust after Kevin has faded, selfish sexist pig dumping Rosie on Sally at work

Rock4please Tue 26-Nov-19 09:46:55

One of the most interesting aspects of CC is the casual everyday sexism and I agree that Kevin is a prime example. Also Derek, a brilliantly authentic character, who has been absolutely vile to Mavis, but still lands her with an unwanted house guest, then leaves her to cook dinner for them after she has been working all day, whilst they go off to the pub.

SapatSea Tue 26-Nov-19 13:54:25

Derek has been so vile to Mavis, blaming her and her intrinsic self for all his woes. Kev is just shouty and horrible too, dumping Rosie on Sally on her first day in new job. Why on earth did Rita like "how they go about their lives?"

I don't envy Emily, I wouldn't want Bernard knocking on my "connecting door."

Had to laugh at Gail getting a GP out for a home visit on a Sunday morning for Sarah Louise's poorly tummy and Martin's "it what they're there for". Dr's) That had long since gone in London.

Redglitter Tue 26-Nov-19 14:30:28

Derek's outburst to Mavis was dreadful. Vera is a far more horrible character than I remember too. The way she ranted at Rita Ivy & Curly this week was ridiculous

x2boys Tue 26-Nov-19 14:46:36

I think. Vera does mellow though ,but yes she is a nasty piece of work , Why on earth is Rita giving Kev and Sally £5,000 I have,nt noticed them being particularly close ?

thenightsky Tue 26-Nov-19 14:55:21

Hurray!!! Norris has arrived. grin

Susiesoap7 Tue 26-Nov-19 16:26:50

Derek treated Mavis terribly, quite abusive, I would have packed his bags and shown him the door!
I love Vera and jack though
Mrs grimes is priceless,

Bluerussian Tue 26-Nov-19 16:50:47

I agree Derek was really obnoxious to Mavis but today he seems to have put things right.

The guy who was selling Derek the idea of selling stuff to people (a bit like Bettaware I suppose) - does anyone know who played him? He looks familiar to me.

Smelly50 Tue 26-Nov-19 17:08:03

Was he in bad girls ??

x2boys Tue 26-Nov-19 17:16:26

Was Jamie,s dad who hit Jack not in bad girls ?Was he not the corrupt prison officer who kept having affairs with the prisoner ?

thenightsky Tue 26-Nov-19 17:50:48

I recognised the pyramid selling chap too. And Jamie's dad. And Sister of Paediatrics who had a row with Martin.

WheresThatCatGoneNow Tue 26-Nov-19 20:52:55

There's an actual real-life company nowadays called Envirosphere, selling the same sort of stuff!

I wonder if they know about this storyline shock

Bluerussian Wed 27-Nov-19 06:12:29

The actor who played Ronnie Cooper is called Matthew Marsh. Name means nothing to me but MMarsh is a familiar face, one of those actors you often see in things but don't necessary know their name.

x2boys Wed 27-Nov-19 06:28:42

The paediatric Sister looked familiar to me too , I think she's played a nurse in something else ,more long standing role ,may be Casualty/Holby City or Doctors ?

Smelly50 Wed 27-Nov-19 08:29:33

Yes I got it wrong. Jamie's dad was in bad girls . Pyramid chap has been in lots of things midsummer murder, the coroner. The nurse has been in wallander law and order uk amongst other things

HeIenaDove Fri 29-Nov-19 16:22:06

If you mean the Sister Martin was shouting at she played Delbert Wilkins girlfriend in The Lenny Henry Show in the 80s and Rons wife Stella in the earlier episodes of Goodnight Sweetheart in the 90s.

thenightsky Fri 29-Nov-19 18:46:58

Stella!!! That's it. I was watching Goodnight Sweetheart repeats earlier this week on Forces TV. I knew I'd seen her recently.

HeIenaDove Fri 29-Nov-19 19:02:11

I love Forces TV smile

ConfCall Fri 29-Nov-19 20:01:18

Funny seeing Norris and Emily’s first meeting. They became such great friends.

I was thinking that Denise Welch must be imminent as Natalie. Pretty sure that was mid-1990s.

WheresThatCatGoneNow Sat 30-Nov-19 07:46:09

Ooh, can't wait for Natalie Horrocks to rock up!

I always thought she was dead glamorous, swishing into the street in her sleek BMW.

Just a shame it started the slow disintegration of Kevin and Sally's (almost) perfect marriage ☹

Redglitter Sun 01-Dec-19 05:12:24

Thankfully theres a while to go before Denise Welsh appears. Its currently early 1994 she doesnt appear til Summer 1997

SapatSea Sun 01-Dec-19 10:19:44

I actually find Kevin and Sally quite annoying. I don't understand their money issues. They bought Hilda Ogden's house at a knockdown price (about £7kiirc) and got thir mates to help refurb it in return for a few cans. Curly bought Rita's house a few years later and paid £28k and the Platt's paid about £21k for their pad. When S&K were having trouble paying the mrtgage her mum gave her several thousand from the dad's life insurance which would have near enough covered their mortgage. They both work and now Sally blubs a bit and Rita gives them five thou. Sally never seems satisfied and Kev is just volatile and shouty.

SapatSea Sun 01-Dec-19 10:20:39

Poor Percy how is he going to extricate from Maud's clutches?

x2boys Sun 01-Dec-19 11:48:58

Yeah I don't understand the whole Kevin and Sally and Rita money Buissness ,she hardly knows them they were not exactly close, she made a big deal of only giving Jenny ( who I know was being devious) £1,000 and Jenny was like a daughter to her yet gives Kevin and Sally £5,000 for no real reasonconfused

SupersonicGerm Mon 02-Dec-19 08:39:52

Hating the Norris and Derek storyline, so tedious, thank god for fast forward!

SapatSea Mon 02-Dec-19 09:06:17

I agree Supersonic. I think the slide has definitely started. The mid 80's ones were better and more gripping IMHO. Where is Phyllis? was the actress ill at this time as Phyllis would be fighting tooth and nail to keep Maud Grimes away from Percy, helping in the cafe when Gail is with Sarah and advising Des on Raquel.

x2boys Mon 02-Dec-19 09:18:22

I read somewhere that the actress who played Phyllis had a break of nine months in 1994 not sure why exactly ?Maybe ill health ,I haden t ,realised that Fiona ,s character didn't really have a big part for a while ,she's been in it for over a year ( in their time) and we don't see much of her did they slowely build up.her character ?

SapatSea Mon 02-Dec-19 14:13:13

I think that once Fiona gets with Steve and the salon becomes a definite fixture on t'street she becomes more of a regular.

ConfCall Mon 02-Dec-19 14:19:00

Yes, I’m missing Phyllis in the Maud/Percy storyline. Would have added a bit of spice!

I ageee that the Norris MLM story is dull although he became a valuable character later I think. There’s a clip doing the rounds currently on Twitter of him, Blanche, Sally and Jack letting themselves into Rita’s flat because they think she’s dead! Lots of retweets with “when CS was good” comments.

justthecat Thu 05-Dec-19 15:53:05

Don is sooo creepy

x2boys Thu 05-Dec-19 17:37:03

He is @justthecat ,the actor who played Bernard the Vicar is a terrible actor.

justthecat Thu 05-Dec-19 18:16:30

All I could focus on when Bernard was breaking the engagement was his comb over 😱

thenightsky Thu 05-Dec-19 20:54:24

I don't understand why Denise snubbed Ken after the barn dance. I know she was rattled by having Don turn up in the taxi, but it wasn't Ken's fault.

justthecat Thu 05-Dec-19 21:12:14

Any sane woman would run away from ken Barlow

HeIenaDove Fri 06-Dec-19 16:52:23

Curly and Des are both arseholes.

WheresThatCatGoneNow Fri 06-Dec-19 17:00:07

Why, Helena? What have they done?

I haven't watched it yet shock

HeIenaDove Fri 06-Dec-19 17:03:13

Des told Curly he had been unfaithful. And Curly was all "wow i wish i had that problem"

You can see the start of 90s lad culture now

WheresThatCatGoneNow Fri 06-Dec-19 17:11:01

Thanks, Helena! grin

When does Petula Peach turn up? I think she owned an abbatoir, and Fred Elliott fancied his chances with her!

Must be a few years away yet, I think.

WheresThatCatGoneNow Fri 06-Dec-19 17:13:31

Was Des contrite when he was confiding in Curly, Helena?

I bet he was, because I feel he's a decent man at heart.

x2boys Fri 06-Dec-19 18:39:24

I think it was a bit tongue in cheek with Curly because, his relationships don't seem to work out ,whereas,Des is a,ladies man ,I thought he was being genuine when he told Des not to mess it up with Raquel ?

SapatSea Sat 07-Dec-19 15:20:15

Don is such a vile man, taking the moral high ground with Denise, when he knew he'd cause bother by coming back off shift to collect her and Ken, makes my skin crawl.

Poor Emily. I didn't like Bernard but he put a sparkle in her eyes. I suppose Percy will decide to call off his wedding, I wouldn't fancy wearing Maud's dead husband's pyjamas.

x2boys Sat 07-Dec-19 15:42:24

He's a good actor though , he was so meek and mild when he first came into it ,yeah poor Emily ,but I'm not sure i could have coped with Bernards atrocious acting for much longer!

justthecat Sat 07-Dec-19 21:27:40

Most of the men should be cast out to sea, like Alf though

ConfCall Sun 08-Dec-19 13:56:55

Maud will be hurt next, I suspect. Percy will remain at Emily’s.

Des made the classic mistake of optimistically settling for the nice person he wasn’t in love with, and hoping for the best. A glance at the Relationships board will reflect how that sort of decision usually turns out.

Don is so well acted. Very sinister.

The Bernard actor is a hammy stage actor. Cringey.

I had forgotten about Alf’s crush on Rita.

SapatSea Tue 10-Dec-19 10:05:26

Tanya is great. I wish they had kept her in the show for longer. Des is horrible and weak, perhaps Tanya reminds him of Steph. Loved the party, no one has fun in current Corrie.

Ken do up your shirt buttons, urgh.

Loved Emily and the undercooked dinner. Derek was actually being very sensitive and kind.

ConfCall Tue 10-Dec-19 12:36:02

Emily’s response to being jilted was Corrie at its best. Understated and nuanced. I really “got” how much distress she was in. These days, the story would be totally overdone.

Eva Pope left to have a baby in ‘94. A loss to the cast.

Good to see Miss Fenwick back. I thought we’d seen the last of her.

I watched it every day back then (revising for Finals and I watched it during my break) but I don’t remember the Mandy story at all (was this the start of the end of the Platts’ marriage?) and I can’t recall the Charlie/Bet relationship. Alec must be back soon though.

SapatSea Tue 10-Dec-19 13:49:52

I don't recall the Mandy story. I do remember the Charlie story, it got quite a lot press interest as the Charlie actor sometimes played Sean Connery's body double or stunt double.

You are right, Emily's story is so well done and Eileen Derbyshire gets to show her acting chops.

InterdimensionalManiac Wed 18-Dec-19 10:54:27

Hate Jack and Vera and especially this pigeon story!

thenightsky Wed 18-Dec-19 11:42:28

I'm starting to hate Raquel and her simpering. I'm sure I used to like her the first time around though.

SapatSea Wed 18-Dec-19 19:05:52

I agree, the pigeon story is pants. Raquel's simpering annoyed me first time round and still grates, it's just too much. No wonder Tanya baits her. Lovely to see "sexy specs"
Deirdre back on t'street after her RL treatment for non Hodgkin's lymphona.

WheresThatCatGoneNow Thu 19-Dec-19 12:26:49

Ah! So that's why Denise was laying off the booze and fags!

Until she actually told Ken, I hadn't twigged. So that's how Daniel came about then!

Not loving Deirdre's new hairdo 😲 I wonder if it's a wig? If so, why on earth didn't they choose something more flattering?

SapatSea Thu 19-Dec-19 16:27:14

It is a wig, you can see the synthetic Barbie hair shine under the lights. I agree it isn't that flattering but I suppose it will be temporary until Anne Kirkbride's real hair grew back. (after her cancer treatment)

Denise has really awful hair for a hairdresser. Denise told Rita a few episodes back that she was going to let "fate be kind", I guess she was kinda playing roulette about getting pregnant. You'd think Ken would have used condoms as he told Deirdre very firmly he didn't want more children when she suggested having a child.

WheresThatCatGoneNow Thu 19-Dec-19 16:34:16

Thanks Sap.

You know, Raquel's hair is a wig too

Sarah Lancashire had quite short 'choppy' hair IRL at that time.

SapatSea Thu 19-Dec-19 16:43:28

Rita has a wig as well. She said she got fed up dyeing her hair bright ginger and having to have it styled which was brutal on it. It saves a lot of time I should think when in hair and make up before filming. Bet looks so much nicer when she has hair down in the morning (although that could still be a wig?) than when she has her wiggy beehive and curls.

justthecat Thu 19-Dec-19 17:00:26

The words ken and condoms should not be used in a sentence together 🤢

x2boys Thu 19-Dec-19 18:15:37

Yes I wondered if Deirdre,s hair was a wig, it's quite ill fitting ,Ken and condoms that's put an unwanted image in my head 😵, the flat above the cafe there must be two entrances one through the cafe and another around the back ( we saw the outside of it last week and Tanya told Des to go through the cafe when she said Alex,s car ,I can't work out where the other entrance is? It's been bothering me!

WheresThatCatGoneNow Thu 19-Dec-19 18:45:58

Bet's 'morning' hair actually was Julie Goodyear's natural hair.

Made me wonder why they bothered with all those over-elaborate wigs.

Maybe she didn't want her own hair messed about with too much.

x2boys Thu 19-Dec-19 19:08:08

Is the bee hive "do" a wig too? I thought it was just that God awful thing she wore when Alec was in it ,that, shortish back combed affair?

x2boys Thu 19-Dec-19 19:11:10

Pretty sure Vera,s was a wig too when she appeared in real life her normal hair was much shorter and straighter
