The latest Sarah Lancashire drama starts tonight, from the writer of Kirri and National Treasure. Anyone else planning to watch?

HelenaDove Thu 24-Oct-19 20:32:08

CoolCarrie Thu 24-Oct-19 20:43:38

Great cast Joanne Scalan is a brilliant actress, in comedy and drama, I love her in No Offence and Getting On. It’s amazing to watch classic Corrie on ITV 3 and see Sarah Lancaster in that, and see her career now. I will definitely be watching.

FlyingFlamingo Thu 24-Oct-19 20:44:49

I am because they filmed it near me which involved closing a car park I use causing me some inconvenience so I feel invested grin

Encyclo Thu 24-Oct-19 21:07:11

Watching. My two favourite actresses are in this.

Groovee Thu 24-Oct-19 21:09:00

Saw it advertised. So watching

OrangeTwirlGate Thu 24-Oct-19 21:15:04

I’m watching!
I’m not from anywhere near Wales so I’m struggling to understand every word but other than that I’m hooked.

SavageBeauty73 Thu 24-Oct-19 21:26:52

I have 3 teenagers so on the edge of my seat.

SavageBeauty73 Thu 24-Oct-19 21:27:40

Bloody hell. My nerves.

spiderbabymum Thu 24-Oct-19 21:28:20

It’s brutally raw innit

VictoriaBun Thu 24-Oct-19 21:28:33

Tense !

RingtheBells Thu 24-Oct-19 21:28:54

Also watching,

Noeuf Thu 24-Oct-19 21:29:09

It's not great is it? Very funny baddies in their suits and jewellery.
Plus the 'what's that?' As they passed gas canisters with smokes and aerosols.

OrangeTwirlGate Thu 24-Oct-19 21:31:57

Actings not great.

WellTidy Thu 24-Oct-19 21:32:14

SL’s accent isn’t the best.

I loved National Treasure but I wasn’t keen on Kiri the more it went on.

Will keep watching though.

Sagradafamiliar Thu 24-Oct-19 21:32:40

So very crap but I'm intrigued to see where the episodes go from here.

Ithinkwerealonenowtiffany Thu 24-Oct-19 21:33:00

Its shite. Why not use Welsh actors as leads instead of Sarah Lancashire? Her accent is dire.

AnyFucker Thu 24-Oct-19 21:33:59

Christ, not another "gritty" stringy-haired Sarah Lancashire overwrought dramafest

FlyingFlamingo Thu 24-Oct-19 21:38:00

Ithink my thoughts exactly! Her accent is dire

BitOfFun Thu 24-Oct-19 21:38:09

I'm quite enjoying it.

Noeuf Thu 24-Oct-19 21:38:19

It's like a daytime tv saga . And the nurse was ineffectual. You can't go in, oh yes you can.

BitOfFun Thu 24-Oct-19 21:39:37

Hmm, I can't see the television news broadcasting Sarah Lancashire's rant at the besuited baddie.

Noeuf Thu 24-Oct-19 21:39:48

To be fair I'm enjoying it in a 'taking the piss with dh' way

OrangeTwirlGate Thu 24-Oct-19 21:39:56

I assumed her husband (that she can’t locate) would be dead having tried to be a hero but was that him sat on his bed watching the tv?

WellTidy Thu 24-Oct-19 21:40:08

It’s unfortunate that they’re replaying the clip where SL says “I know you” to the site owner as her accent is especially bad in that bit.

unique1986 Thu 24-Oct-19 21:40:13

Not quite sure how she survived and the man.

FlyingFlamingo Thu 24-Oct-19 21:40:51

And wouldn’t they be taken to a major trauma centre. I may be biased as I know where those scenes were filmed and County General it ain’t grin

JellyfishAndShells Thu 24-Oct-19 21:40:54

I thought 5 mins in that it was either going to be great and gripping or dire.

Looking like dire atm sad

UrsulaPandress Thu 24-Oct-19 21:41:21

I luffs Sarah but I’m struggling

BitOfFun Thu 24-Oct-19 21:41:29

Is there any better way to watch anything, Noeuf? It's one of life's small pleasures.

ASmallMovie Thu 24-Oct-19 21:41:45

It’s shit. Unrealistically lovey-dovey couples at the start. And watching people grieving isn’t good drama.

Sally Wainwright is a much much more talented writer of women in particular and drama generally.

OrangeTwirlGate Thu 24-Oct-19 21:41:52

That woman who I assume found out her daughter died and walked off just casually saying ‘she’s dead’

Erm wtf?

I’d be screaming on the floor in a heap.

Noeuf Thu 24-Oct-19 21:43:13

BoF happy days when something lends itself to ridicule 😂

MotherOfSoupDragons Thu 24-Oct-19 21:43:22

Ooh, Steve Baldini, mean cop and the PM of Denmark.

Bedsheets4knickers Thu 24-Oct-19 21:43:41

Is she having an affair ?

RingtheBells Thu 24-Oct-19 21:46:16

I’m enjoying it more than some of the other crap I’ve tried to watch recently like the Dublin Murders and that Japanese series which I think is on at the same time as this.

Bedsheets4knickers Thu 24-Oct-19 21:46:53

Oh no she isn't , to many wats app groups going on

unique1986 Thu 24-Oct-19 21:47:12

Horrible kitchen.

catmg Thu 24-Oct-19 21:47:13

I'm predicting a town backlash when it turns out that Sarah Lancashire's daughter only survived because the random guy in a 'walk' who rescued her was actually the culprit, responsible for blowing up the building.

WellTidy Thu 24-Oct-19 21:47:19

ASmall it isn’t a Sally Wainwright script. I loved her writing in Happy Valley.

colouringinpro Thu 24-Oct-19 21:47:56

nice dad confused

OrangeTwirlGate Thu 24-Oct-19 21:48:15

This is just getting weird now

colouringinpro Thu 24-Oct-19 21:48:26

omg sad

SavageBeauty73 Thu 24-Oct-19 21:48:55

Wtf? Domestic violence now. I'd have poured the kettle over him

EleanorReally Thu 24-Oct-19 21:49:11

BitOfFun Thu 24-Oct-19 21:49:13

Well that seems uncalled for shock

EleanorReally Thu 24-Oct-19 21:49:30

Bit weird

colouringinpro Thu 24-Oct-19 21:49:33

JellyfishAndShells Thu 24-Oct-19 21:49:39

Wut ? sad

MotherOfSoupDragons Thu 24-Oct-19 21:49:40

BitOfFun Thu 24-Oct-19 21:50:02

Although I'm starting to see why their daughter is a bit of a tearaway.

EleanorReally Thu 24-Oct-19 21:50:32

Too weird

Noeuf Thu 24-Oct-19 21:50:47

Cuddling him after he punched her? Odd message.

mclover Thu 24-Oct-19 21:50:53

Not really an accident? Bunch of kids vandalising. Don't feel that sorry for them

ASmallMovie Thu 24-Oct-19 21:52:11

Yeah I know it’s not a Sally Wainwright script. That was kinda my point. It would be so much better if it was smile

OrangeTwirlGate Thu 24-Oct-19 21:52:24

Can someone summarise this when it’s finished as I no longer follow what’s going on confused

Noeuf Thu 24-Oct-19 21:52:24

Hospitals are super busy. Handy they just bumped into each other.

BitOfFun Thu 24-Oct-19 21:54:00

I'm struggling to see how anybody is blaming it on everyone, anyone but the kids who broke in and were fucking about with matches in a room full of gas canisters.

WellTidy Thu 24-Oct-19 21:54:38

Sorry ASmall. Yes, I agree. Sally would have done it better 😀. I am not bothered about watching next week.

BitOfFun Thu 24-Oct-19 21:55:10

And the vigil idea seems a bit pointless too.

FlyingFlamingo Thu 24-Oct-19 21:56:02

In the Radio Times the writer was comparing the accident itself to Grenfell and Aberfan. Because people sleeping in their own homes and going to school is obviously comparable to teenagers breaking, entering and vandalising hmm

Ithinkwerealonenowtiffany Thu 24-Oct-19 21:56:17

Ive switched off.
Such a shame as i like watching SL & MLJ.

Noeuf Thu 24-Oct-19 21:56:40

This is unintentionally hilarious. May have to switch off.

Gluetap Thu 24-Oct-19 21:58:19

Would the daughter not have been on a ventilator and sedated after surgery?

BitOfFun Thu 24-Oct-19 21:58:29

"We'll find out who did this"- well it's not exactly a case that would baffle Sherlock Holmes, is ot?

SavageBeauty73 Thu 24-Oct-19 21:58:32

Why would they blame anyone at present? The kids broke into a work site 🤷‍♀️

ASmallMovie Thu 24-Oct-19 21:58:56

No problem Well.
I’ve also given up.
Jack Thorne, and I’m sure he’s a lovely guy, but he is writing so many things and IMHO the quality is suffering.
This is phoned-in shit.

JellyfishAndShells Thu 24-Oct-19 21:59:21

The zombie walk ? As if.

It’s very bad .

MotherOfSoupDragons Thu 24-Oct-19 21:59:44

I'm out.

colouringinpro Thu 24-Oct-19 21:59:44

TheDivineOddity Thu 24-Oct-19 22:00:01

May have to switch off

Not just me then.

Yubaba Thu 24-Oct-19 22:00:24

If she had a major head injury she’d have a massive bandage on her head and her face would be swollen confused

Noeuf Thu 24-Oct-19 22:01:19

I think glue tap and a pp have it. Slight lack of aftercare.

HelenaDove Thu 24-Oct-19 22:02:34

Couldnt help noticing the woman from the construction company called her the bully when hes the one abusing his wife.

SauvignonBlanche Thu 24-Oct-19 22:04:12

That was very strange.

Encyclo Thu 24-Oct-19 22:04:52

I'm going to stick with it for Sarah Lancashire and Joanne Scanlan, but Jaysus it's rough going

Hesperatum Thu 24-Oct-19 22:05:20

Is it me or is Sarah Lancashire speaking very quietly - I can hardly hear her?

unique1986 Thu 24-Oct-19 22:06:41

I'll watch next week.
Anyone else? Intrigued by the building owner and the relationships shes gonna have with Asian guy.

unique1986 Thu 24-Oct-19 22:07:43

Sarah Lancashire has been off for a while. She was not good in that drama with Richard Gere.

Rainatnight Thu 24-Oct-19 22:08:44

God, that was shite. I’m SO disappointed. Love Sarah Lancashire. It was so heavily advertised - popped up every time I went on Twitter - that I wonder if they knew it was ropey and we’re trying to drum up watchers.

Don’t know if I‘ll give episode 2 a go.

MintyMabel Thu 24-Oct-19 22:09:54

I’m not watching it. That makes reading this thread really quite funny.😄

WellTidy Thu 24-Oct-19 22:10:50

I didn’t like that Richard Gere thing either. Skipped through it on I player. I agree that SL wasn’t good in it.

I absolutely loved Happy Valley though and expect everything she is in to be as good and it never ever is.

I didn’t like Kiri either by the end.

poorbuthappy Thu 24-Oct-19 22:11:48

@MintyMabel me too!!!!!

WellTidy Thu 24-Oct-19 22:12:25

The Guardian has given it four stars in its review 😕

FREEM Thu 24-Oct-19 22:15:27

i switched off a tthe DV scene.
Too weird.

ASmallMovie Thu 24-Oct-19 22:15:38

The Guardian gave the outstanding Chernobyl 3 stars but gives this 4?!? Jeez-oh.

WellTidy Thu 24-Oct-19 22:17:18

The Independent has given it four stars too. Odd.

Looobyloo Thu 24-Oct-19 22:19:54

Very very disappointing. I couldn't hear a word SL was saying, then her husband beat her then she hugs him, then there's a woman getting a seriously ill teenager to say her alphabet confused

Generally anything with SL in is worth watching, normally..

Think I'll give it a miss next week.

OrangeTwirlGate Thu 24-Oct-19 22:20:14

That was absolutely crap.

Great idea, or so I thought. But it was boring, weird and just plain crap.

Shit acting from all (sorry SL I do like you otherwise)

I don’t know how it works with tv but do you think bbc and itv didn’t want to buy it as they thought it was shit hence why it’s on channel 4?

Fantababy Thu 24-Oct-19 22:25:21

I tend to think things on C4 will be better. Albeit often more strange or off the wall. Closer to BBC2 stuff maybe.

mustangs Thu 24-Oct-19 22:30:51

I agree that a Sally Wainwright script would have been shitloads better.

I watched it because of Sarah Lancashire...since Happy Valley and Last Tango I have it in my mind that she's going to be fucking amazing in everything she's in. But the last couple of things she's done have been a bit hmm

She's still my girl crush though

Encyclo Thu 24-Oct-19 22:33:21

Nah I'm sticking with it. Sarah won't let me down surely?

That DV scene was so jarring and unexpected in the middle of all the silent moments and her husband's complete lack of interest in the fate of everyone inside the building including his own child was so bizarre. Is that realistic?

I need to know more, but dh has bailed on it. He thinks it's unwatchable.

RolytheRhino Thu 24-Oct-19 22:34:06

then there's a woman getting a seriously ill teenager to say her alphabet

I thought she was saying the alphabet so the teenager could blink when she got to the right letter and thus spell out a word to communicate?

The DV thing was bizarre.

1happyhippie Thu 24-Oct-19 22:36:12

I didn’t enjoy it either. Felt a bit rushed and missed loads of info out.
Wasn’t very believable either. There was hardly any emotion shown considering a major incident had happened, killing so many children!
People on Twitter are saying the same. It’s a shame because it could have been a really good drama.
Don’t think I will watch next week.

mustangs Thu 24-Oct-19 22:39:02

Yes, it's getting absolutely slated on Twitter.

RolytheRhino Thu 24-Oct-19 22:39:21

So, did all of them die except one?

mummabubs Thu 24-Oct-19 22:41:10

I thought it was OK, although certain points did jar a little- such as the nurse letting her just walk onto the ward -(you're not alone on that one neouf!) I'm possibly a tad biased as I work with patients who've sustained a brain injury not too far from where this is set so I found it hard to see many inaccuracies in how the daughter's care was portrayed post injury. Although I get it's a drama you'd think someone on the writing team would have consulted with neuro services to see what you would expect in the real life equivalent!? I'll still watch the next ep though. That DV scene was so uncomfortable I had to look away.

newhopewithanyluck Thu 24-Oct-19 22:43:13

Subtitles required for sure if I bother with this next week.
