Never watched this before and really couldn't understand the Aiden Turner fascination. However last night I watched the first two episodes of series 1 on Netflix and boy oh boy do I understand now!!!! Consider me hooked!!

As well as loving the horse he rides and really wanting to gallop over the cliffs on it!

Up to episode 7 now - falling more in love with the horse every time!! Not sure about the accents though - does anyone know how accurate they are?

I’d say the accent are pretty spot on. They certainly sound more Cornish than Devonish.

So tempted to rewatch from episode 1

The scenery is spectacular, and yes, I do mean the cliffs and the crashing waves, but Poldark himself isn’t bad!

@Papergirl1968 I sort of agree - he does have a lovely smile but he's a bit short for me - I like my men to be well over 6ft tall!! Demelza makes him look short too!!

@TheRLodger I knew they were West Country but it was the wording that threw me - did the really say things like "it be me" rather than "it's me"??

According to the internet, he’s about 5ft 11 to 6ft, Blobby.
I think Elinor Tomlinson is quite tall.

Papergirl1968 The profile I found said 5ft 10" Grin. Still too short for me but he does have an awesome body in the scything scene Grin

Think they definitely would have done way back when. Even now people say similar phrases to that. Like it’s part of the direlect

Probably adds a couple of inches on like most men!
He does suit a billowing white shirt, long black coat, knee length boots and a tricorn!

I did this about a year ago OP. The first couple of seasons were fantastic then I quickly got bored of the same storyline over and over again - poldark's anger gets the better of him, has to figure out a way to save the day, usually helped by Desmerelda or friends but gets all the glory. Eat sleep repeat. Don't think I watched beyond about season 3

DerelictWreck

I know what you mean but the new (last) series, after a slow start, is a cracking finish to the whole thing.

You’d probably still find it a bit rinse-and-repeat but there are some new characters as well now & it’s pretty gripping Grin

(Aidan Turner does nothing for me btw but it’s still enjoyable)

A strong recommendation, btw, for the Guardian’s episode by episode reviews. The writer is a massive fan who really gets it, & they’re open to comments at the time, which adds a lot

Series 2 ep 1 here. Click on the “Poldark: episode by episode” link at the top & it takes you back to all the links (they don’t appear to have done series 1 Confused)

I finished series 2 last night - didn't actually get anything productive done yesterday afternoon as had 3 hours of Poldark pleasure!!! Ended up shouting at the TV at both Demelza and Ross for being pig headed and stubborn even though I could see both points of view! Actor playing George does a great job of being superior but showing his vulnerability every now and then.

Finally sorted something out which has been bugging me for a few episodes - the chap that Caroline was supposed to marry - the MP - I couldn't think where I recognised him from and finally sussed it out!! He was in Mamma Mia 2!! Grin Grin

@TheRLodger a totally irrelevant point to this thread, but for future reference it's a 'Devonian' accent....not Devonish Grin

BTW the horse's name is Seamus.

He's quite well known and turns up on quite a few programmes!

@Kelsoid you learn something everyday. I don’t realise that Devonian was how you referred to a person who came from Devon

I read an Aidan Turner interview which mentioned fans at shoots wanting to see Seamus rather than him Grin

I'm watching Poldark for the first time and I'm currently watching season 2 episode 5. Now I have a question for all those that have seen this programme. Is it just me that sees Elizabeth as a soulless and dull character? Why she is so appealing? It is totally lost on me.

Oh and the music is soul destroying.

Anyone know where we can watch season 4 for free? Bizarrely enough my DC have got the bug Hmm Must be the horse rather than Aidan Turner!

@EraOfTheGrey my interpretation of Elizabeth is that she wanted Ross all along but when she thought he was dead, got engaged to Francis who was acceptable but by no means the love of her life. Although she developed fluffy feelings for Francis he was never really 'up there' with Ross for her affections so she became rather robotic and just going through the motions of being married. When Francis died she married George for his money and as time has gone on she's realised what an utter dick he is but can't escape because of the trappings of wealth and the advantages they bring to her and GF. Not sure if shes had George's baby yet at your stage of the series but that brings into play another side of her character.

Part of me feels very sorry for Elizabeth - she's obv trying to do the right thing for her child but making herself very miserable and putting a brave face on it. I'm still trying to work out if she really hates R & D or if thats another show she puts on for George.
