TENNIS THREAD -Sliding in the clay, on the journey to Roland Garros !

(1000 Posts)
Raahh Fri 19-Apr-19 09:29:31

Just had a slight panic when I saw the thread was nearly full.

I am now off to check the schedule properly- to see what I'll miss todaygrin

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 09:46:37

Thanks Raahh brew

magimedi Fri 19-Apr-19 09:46:38

Logging in. tennis

Raahh Fri 19-Apr-19 09:49:44

Hurrah! Thanks magi!

magimedi Fri 19-Apr-19 09:50:02

And I have just realised that I've booked to go & see the family - for the last week of the French Open. Won't see much of that with grandmotherly duties to do!!

Still, I love my DGCs better than tennis !

(About the only thing I do!)

Fizzywinegum Fri 19-Apr-19 09:52:07

Thanks for new thread Raahh - hoping to get my first proper Rafa fix today smile. Dominic and Stefanos are my go to players as well after Rafa. I’m still not entirely convinced by Sascha but I do like his hair grin

JaneJeffer Fri 19-Apr-19 09:59:00

Who's a good boy?

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 10:16:30

Aw I love that pic! So cute!

Looking forward to seeing David on the clay - he's playing doubles as well as singles I've heard.

I'm watching the first QF at the mo - well, not really, it's just on in the background. One of them (Sonego I think) really reminds me of Mario Ancic, if anyone remembers him? He used to be one of my faves.

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 10:28:09

magi I noticed you did the 1000th post on the old thread!

Jealous envy grin

magimedi Fri 19-Apr-19 10:45:18

Private Ner-ner-ner-ner-ner!! grin

JaneJeffer Fri 19-Apr-19 11:42:11

Fizzywinegum Fri 19-Apr-19 13:01:59

Ooh medvedev has taken the first set against Djokovic - don’t want to tempt fate but at least djok isn’t having it all his own way - I’d rather not see him in the final.

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 13:07:15

Yes I wonder if he can hang on - Djok was making a few errors but he usually manages to turn it around doesn't he...

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 13:10:52

Petch the voice of doom predicting Novak will win (despite the score being 6-3, 1-0 to Medvedev hmm)

He'll probably be proved right, but it's still annoying though!

JaneJeffer Fri 19-Apr-19 13:16:07

Petch is never right (in my eyes anyway). Come on Medvedev!

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 13:34:13

Tsk. Typical.

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 13:40:41

Although... I would not mind Novak winning this one really. It's just good for it to be interesting!

Why was Medvedev kicking that "hoarding” thing? I couldn't see if he ran into it, or if it was too close to the court or something. It looked quite near the ball kids anyway.

mama1980 Fri 19-Apr-19 14:11:13

Hi all smile and thanks for the new thread Raahh.
Not watching much tennis as we are out in the garden but keep popping back in to check the scores.
Unfortunately think Novak has this now.

JaneJeffer Fri 19-Apr-19 14:55:14

Ooh well done Medvedev (thanks Petch) grin

Fizzywinegum Fri 19-Apr-19 15:00:17

Yes well done medvedev! I’ve also been in the garden - it’s gorgeous here - just came inside to see Djokovic go out.

Now it’s Rafa time smile

Please don’t make any predictions about Rafa Mama grin. I’ve given up on predictions now.

mama1980 Fri 19-Apr-19 15:18:39

grin I won't fizzy grin

Fizzywinegum Fri 19-Apr-19 15:23:05

grin Eek Pella not looking at all intimidated - he’s broken Rafa’s serve twice now.

Rafa looking very nice in his blue and orange - no sleeves would be good though smile

magimedi Fri 19-Apr-19 15:23:51

Hooray for Medvedev.

Always happy to see Djok out.

Raahh Fri 19-Apr-19 15:26:01

Delighted to see the Djok result, but a Rafa does not need to follow him!

JaneJeffer Fri 19-Apr-19 15:27:29

I've got my fingers crossed for Rafa while cursing Sky Sports.

mama1980 Fri 19-Apr-19 15:31:26

Eek! Not sure what wrong with Rafa today, he's all over the place.

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 15:31:54

Hmm. This wasn't in the script, was it?! confused

Fizzywinegum Fri 19-Apr-19 15:36:00

Before the match Greg rusedski was implying that pella would be lucky to get a game hmm

Come on Rafa!

Raahh Fri 19-Apr-19 15:38:08

I need to go out.

I can't cope with the stress.

Fizzywinegum Fri 19-Apr-19 15:39:24

I’m not enjoying it much either Raahh

mama1980 Fri 19-Apr-19 15:39:25

Definitely not in the script. A break back here would be nice....
Greg hasn't been right all day grin

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 15:43:26

Ooh your wish has been granted mama!

mama1980 Fri 19-Apr-19 15:45:56

Now he needs a easy hold......

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 16:03:03

Aw Diego Schwartzman is there watching - supporting Pella I guess?!

Fizzywinegum Fri 19-Apr-19 16:22:06

Come on Rafa! I keep forgetting that Pella is Argentinian - for some reason I thought he was Italian.

Xisca is looking effortlessly elegant as usual.

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 16:26:22

Pella let him off the hook there! V convincing tie break though.

Raahh Fri 19-Apr-19 16:32:23

I've just got back, phew!to the easy tie break.

Fizzywinegum Fri 19-Apr-19 16:58:09

Rafa still not really convincing - I’ve been looking forward to watching him and now I’m not really enjoying it sad

DramaAlpaca Fri 19-Apr-19 17:03:40

Hello all, haven't been on a tennis thread for a while! smile

I can't find any tennis on my Sky box - where are you all watching? Has it gone online?

Raahh Fri 19-Apr-19 17:05:51

Drama it's on amazon prime.

DramaAlpaca Fri 19-Apr-19 17:10:27

Oh thanks Raahh. Looks like I'll either have to watch it on my tablet which will mean I can't MN at the same time <what a dilemma> or persuade DH we need to upgrade the TV to one that has internet <hmm>

mama1980 Fri 19-Apr-19 17:10:34

Its on amazon prime.
I'm not enjoying the tension but I am the tennis, some amazing shots in the last few games.

mama1980 Fri 19-Apr-19 17:11:29

drama my IPad will allow you to split the screen so I can watch and mumsnet at the same time grin

Fizzywinegum Fri 19-Apr-19 17:16:53

Wow that sounds clever! grin

The second set has been much closer than the score line suggests. Not sure if I dare risk a prediction but I think it might be ok. Pella has played really well. The commentators are admitting that they may have written him off a bit too soon.

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 17:21:08

Pella has really stuck with him - agree it's been closer than it looks from the scoreline.

Hi Drama hope you're well!

JaneJeffer Fri 19-Apr-19 17:25:19

Has the Amazon coverage improved? I don't see as many complaints as when they first got the tennis.

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 17:28:03

I think it has got better, in fairness. I still liked it better when it was on actual TV. Although I don't miss the betting ads!

That was a really tough match for Rafa, not much in it really. Glad he's through.

Our Fabio is up next!

Fizzywinegum Fri 19-Apr-19 17:29:19

I think the amazon coverage has improved Jane or maybe I’ve just got used to it. I find it annoying when there are a lot of matches going on eg in a slam and I can’t find the match that I want. That’s not so much of a problem with smaller tournaments.

Fizzywinegum Fri 19-Apr-19 17:30:22

Phew - yay our Fabio! grin

DramaAlpaca Fri 19-Apr-19 17:39:45

I'm great, thanks Private. You too, I hope?

I'll be even better if I can figure out Mama's split screen tip! I have a Samsung, not an iPad though. I'll be back in a minute when I've had a go...

DramaAlpaca Fri 19-Apr-19 17:47:56

mama thank you!! I've figured it out, never knew it could do that. It's really cool, actually grin

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 18:29:09

Foggy is injured, has problems with his eyes, is covered in bandages etc. Not going well!

Fizzywinegum Fri 19-Apr-19 18:33:06

Oh dear no it’s not going well for Foggy

Raahh Fri 19-Apr-19 18:33:25

Private I am just checking the scores- was wondering what must be going although Coric is good.

Foggy was saying in an article I read, he needs surgery on his elbow(?) I think , and was hoping to make it until after RG to take time out to do it.

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 18:40:11

PS the split screen worked for me as well - had no idea! Thanks mama smile

JaneJeffer Fri 19-Apr-19 18:44:14

Poor Fognini. I like Coric as well though so I don't mind who wins.

JaneJeffer Fri 19-Apr-19 19:42:27

I'm watching the score go back and forth!

JaneJeffer Fri 19-Apr-19 19:45:02

And well done our Fognini!

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 19:45:54

That was nuts!! Foggy was v emotional at the end.

Wonder how he'll be tomorrow for the match with Rafa?

Fizzywinegum Fri 19-Apr-19 19:47:51

Our Fabio’s gone and won it - should be an interesting match against Rafa tomorrow

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 19:50:33

I wonder how his elbow will be - I didn't know that he needed surgery Raahh. Rafa had a long match as well though. Should be an interesting one!

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 19:56:01

Fabio just called Rafa "the king of clay" in his interview - cute

Raahh Fri 19-Apr-19 19:58:08

Private I'm not sure how bad the elbow is- he's scheduled to play every week up to RG too, so not shying away from playing. Which could be risky, unless the elbow is just a niggle that needs a quick fix.

Trouble with Foggy is he is very unpredictable- anyone could turn up tomorrow. grin

Raahh Fri 19-Apr-19 19:58:36

Well, he's not wrong, is he? grin

PrivateIsles Fri 19-Apr-19 20:31:54

grin he's certainly not!

I'm sorry to say that Greg predicted a Rafa win - although he's got to get at least one right, surely?! grin

Raahh Fri 19-Apr-19 20:35:37

I'm ignoring Greg's predictions grin

Raahh Sat 20-Apr-19 14:14:05

Wow, when I looked in on the scores earlier, Medvedev seemed to be well ahead.

Not the case now!

Raahh Sat 20-Apr-19 14:21:48

And Lajovic has won. Wonder what happened to Medvedev (can't watch at the moment).

magimedi Sat 20-Apr-19 14:24:36

Who is this Lajovic? I've never heard of him before this tournament.

Fizzywinegum Sat 20-Apr-19 14:30:48

I’ve not heard of him either magi - surprised that he’s won.

Might try and watch a bit of the Rafa match - foggy looked like the walking wounded at the end of his match yesterday and Rafa was a bit all over the place.

Raahh Sat 20-Apr-19 14:33:19

Lajovic is Serbian, iirc and I only remember him because his first name is Dusan, which I found amusing one. I think Novak's dad is called Dusan. (Probably made that up) he's been around a while.

Raahh Sat 20-Apr-19 14:35:56

Yes, I've made up the Novak fact grin, but there's another Dusan somewhere...

DramaAlpaca Sat 20-Apr-19 14:39:38

I seem to remember that we used to call Lajovic 'Susan' on an earlier thread - or maybe that wasn't on here & it was one of my DC being mean.

PrivateIsles Sat 20-Apr-19 14:41:38

We're stuck on the M6 at the moment (NB I'm not driving) so I will have to rely on you lovely lot to update me on Rafa v Fabio! tennis

DramaAlpaca Sat 20-Apr-19 14:42:08

I wish the Amazon Prime menu was easier to follow, it's a pain having to scroll around to find what you want - or maybe I'm missing something confused

mama1980 Sat 20-Apr-19 15:27:34

Glad everyone is enjoying the split screens smile
I've just got in, was hoping Rafa would be out ahead by now.....
Horrible day to be stuck on the motorway private I hope you're on your way soon.

Fizzywinegum Sat 20-Apr-19 15:35:42

Foggy 5-4 up in first set - not sure what’s going on with Rafa - he keeps losing his serve. Foggy has been arguing with the umpire and has had a code violation.

mama1980 Sat 20-Apr-19 15:43:08

Not good - foggy just took the first set.

DramaAlpaca Sat 20-Apr-19 15:53:36

Something isn't right with Rafa, that much is clear.

mama1980 Sat 20-Apr-19 15:53:41

A bit worried now...

Fizzywinegum Sat 20-Apr-19 15:59:58

He doesn’t look right at all Drama - not looking at all good for Rafa sad

mama1980 Sat 20-Apr-19 16:03:47

Definitely drama sad

Fizzywinegum Sat 20-Apr-19 16:21:18

sad for Rafa but well done Foggy.

Raahh Sat 20-Apr-19 16:31:51

I fell asleep.

Not really the result I wanted to wake up to.sad

It was never going to be an easy task, defending so much. I'm a bit worried for the rest of the season.

magimedi Sat 20-Apr-19 16:42:51

As I told you all a whil;e ago - I reckon Rafa's going to announce retirement this year. Make the most of him.

<I am known to be an old witch>

Private I hope you are moving by now.

kazzaD66 Sat 20-Apr-19 16:53:25

Crikey, just seen the Rafa result! Apparently, Foggy is only the fourth person to beat Rafa at least 3 times on clay (others are Thiem and Gaston Gaudio, both 3 times, and Novak 7 times).
I also see Konta has won the first rubber in the Fed Cup.

Raahh Sat 20-Apr-19 17:09:18

yes, Kazza, it's a very elite group!

Fed up now. Just when I needed cheering up, even the tennis conspired against me.
(it does that a lot grin)

PrivateIsles Sat 20-Apr-19 17:25:07

Finally arrived approx an hour after we should have hmm and missed the entire match. Sounds like Rafa had the bad luck to run into Fognini on one of his good days.

Hopefully not too much to read into the result from Rafa's point of view...?

JaneJeffer Sat 20-Apr-19 18:41:24

Just caught up on the score. Our Fabio's injuries mustn't be too bad then. Hope Rafa is ok.

magimedi Sat 20-Apr-19 22:48:23

* Sounds like Rafa had the bad luck to run into Fognini on one of his good days.*

Or Fognini had the good luck ran into Rafa on one of his bad days!

Raahh Mon 22-Apr-19 08:19:14

Morning! Missed yesterday, as was out and about.

Hope everyone had a good Easter Sunday.
Well done to Foggy- better late than never , I suppose. He's one of those players that I like, but he irritates me , because rather like Monfils, he has built a career on being a temperamental showman. Bit of an under performer.

Hoping for a good week for Rafa in Barcelona, and that his wobbles in MC were just nerves.

Fizzywinegum Mon 22-Apr-19 10:45:01

Morning! I missed the tennis yesterday as well but pleased for Foggy. I’m not sure what was going on with Rafa in the semi - he didn’t seem obviously injured - just really flat and off his game. Yes hoping for better things in Barcelona.

The weather’s lovely again here - it’s like being abroad.

PrivateIsles Mon 22-Apr-19 11:53:18

Morning all and hope you're having a nice Easter weekend. I can't believe this weather!

I didn't watch yesterday either, but I think Foggy deserved his win as well.

Also I just noticed when I saw a photo of him yesterday that his kit Armani!! A bit flash isn't it?!

mama1980 Mon 22-Apr-19 11:53:49

Morning smile I also missed the tennis yesterday.
I struggle to warm to foggy sometimes just because it always seems like he underperforms because he does the temperamental snowman thing but I am pleased for him and his interview was very gracious.
Hoping for a good week in Barcelona for Rafa.

Raahh Tue 23-Apr-19 14:45:17

Afternoon! I have just been checking some of the Barcelona scores, good win for Ferrer against Mischa Zverev, very solid. I'd love him to go out on a good run this week.

PrivateIsles Tue 23-Apr-19 16:16:25

I've just tuned in to see Sascha 3-0 down in the third set.

He needs wins ATM doesn't he?

PrivateIsles Tue 23-Apr-19 16:17:04

That's a great result for David Raahh smile tennis

Raahh Tue 23-Apr-19 17:22:09

So, another bad day at the office for Sascha. Are they playing doubles this week, the brothers?

PrivateIsles Tue 23-Apr-19 17:40:28

No, they don't seem to be - which is a shame after today!

I see Lopez and Lopez have different partners as well - they were a good team, not sure what happened there or if this is just a one-off.

PrivateIsles Tue 23-Apr-19 17:54:01

Zverev: "I'm in a hole and I don't know how to get out of it"

sad I feel bad for him.
