that was scarey, she just had to have a police escort out of an area where the men were getting very antsy about her asking about FGM. Apparently they had come across an FGM ceremony about to take place even though FGM is illegal in Kenya.

how brave are those people who stand up against their communities and publicise this awful practice.

So sad, the man and woman campaigning against FGM are inspirational but unfortunately think they’re fighting a losing battle, so deeply is it embedded in tradition and exploited by elders on religious and monetary grounds

Inspirational, I thought the the fgm parade through the town and woman were more a show put in for the cameras. She looked very pleased with herself as opposed to concerned when she rescued the one girl, whom I might add it said would be returned to her family.

Even the local Police didn't want to intervene and confront the elders who profit from fgm and community who condone it, I feel the law and what happens at a grass roots level were evident - horrifying!

They say essa (the god) told them to stop fgm slowly, until the elders and female practioners of fgm were arrested, then essa told them to carry on with fgm after the arrests. The whole program was a mock to show progress where unfortunately progress has not happened at all - shame on Kenya!

And not to mention the comment andabout the men laughing about kate and her white vagina, that as an uncircumcised woman would be deemed as gagging for it, as one man secretly said "woman who are uncircumcised can not be satisfied sexually"

I watched it, I really hope Kate can help Lillian educate her girls.
If I have got my maths correct the woman working in the fields with 5 children worked all day for £1.60 and the village elder that Kate interviewed got £3.80 per girl that was cut in his village near his house and they cut over 300 girls in one night. ShockShock

Watching it now, those poor boys paraded down the street bleeding! Such a contrast between the attitude towards FGM and the mutilation of those boys. I know not everybody agrees that you can compare the two but in these circumstances surely they are one and the same thing?

Madame Josephine, in terms of physical abuse they are certainly the same, but in terms of physical damage they are not, girls have horrendous damage inflicted which is life changing, often leading to incontinence, recurrent bladder and vaginal infections, agonising pain on sexual intercourse if the external labia have been stitched, difficulty with vaginal birth that can lead to extreme damage, tearing, the development of fistula, fecal incontinence etc etc.

There is also the social difference, boys circumcision is seen as a right of passage, changing a boy into a man, it is a matter of personal and family pride . Female circumcision is promoted to keep the woman subdued, to reduce sexual pleasure and desire, to prove her virginity, to maintain family honour. There is nothing about it that has a positive personal outcome for e woman.

Yes viques I am aware that some types of FGM inflict much more severe damage with lifelong complications. I’m a midwife and have seen it first hand. What I was trying to get at was using that horror to trivialise the issue with boys. I think many people think of male circumcision as a minor procedure performed on a young baby. I don’t think anybody can argue that parading a teenage body through the streets with blood pouring from his butchered penis is anything other than male genital mutilation.

Hopefully they will make sufficient progress with FGM that one day they can tackle the issue with boys too.
