Anyone watching? Im hoping its a balanced thoughtful piece not a daily mail esque their parents must be crack heads! type programme..

Yes watching. I think it is balanced-ish.

SkeletonSkins · 25/07/2017 21:36

Watching. As a primary teacher, we seek this sort of support before even considering exclusion through part time placements at PRUs. This has had a huge impact on a couple of our pupils who have gone on to join us full time again but is so so so difficult to get funded by the LA.

BishopBrennansArse · 25/07/2017 21:38

I didn't, no.
Too passed off with all the C5 sensationalist shit.
If it's not like that I'll take a look on all 4

Chewbecca · 25/07/2017 21:39

I am.

I'm finding it really sad.

There seems to be no exploration of family life or anything so doesn't seem to be finger pointy.

The teachers' patience is impressive.

HalfShellHero · 25/07/2017 21:43

It seems ok so far actually i was sceptical bishop ...so many of these kids are so articulate Sad not the stereotype!

notaflyingmonkey · 25/07/2017 21:44

I'm watching, and it's hard going. God knows I couldn't be a teacher, but I worry that with all of the pressures on schools with the cuts, that more and more kids who have these sorts of issues may get left behind.

SkeletonSkins · 25/07/2017 21:50

Staffing is such a huge huge issue. For them to get to this point, a teacher may have dealt with this sort of behaviour alone with 29 other children. TAs are becoming fewer and fewer and achieving additional funding for 1:1 support is an absolute nightmare requiring hours of work, often to be declined.

HalfShellHero · 25/07/2017 21:57

Definitely Skeleton!

Just watching on catch up. I've had children in my class who have been excluded from their nursery for behaviour and we've known that but had no additional support when they start school and no support from outside agencies because they're just so stretched.

HalfShellHero · 25/07/2017 22:20

I wonder what harveys story is? He is quite menacing bless him,

OP posts:
Mistoffelees · 25/07/2017 22:31

Yeah I feel that's missing from the program a bit so far, there's little explanation of reasons behind the behaviour apart from a cursory mention of a diagnosis here or there.

MeanAger · 25/07/2017 22:34

I'm watching on catch up. I'm finding it really hard as my son is quite similar although not as bad as some of the children shown. exclusion has been threatened. I'm awaiting an ASD assessment to either rule out or confirm. He is moving to a new school in September that are better equipped for these types of issues. Failing that I'm going to take him out of school and homeschool.

I'll be honest, I'm not seeing the point of the programme yet. It seems a bit "look at these naughty children" and that's it.

ggirl · 25/07/2017 22:48

All of these kids seem so sad

ineedamoreadultieradult · 25/07/2017 22:50

I don't think the programme looked into anything in any real depth, the families, the schools they were excluded from, the work they do at the Roseberry or any ongoing support when they leave.

Mistoffelees · 25/07/2017 23:00

I don't feel I really gained anything from watching that, could have been informative and insightful but instead just felt like a filler

MeanAger · 25/07/2017 23:24

Agree with that mistoffelees. There was no insight, no discussion of how the staff were working with the children that was helping them move towards going mainstream education again. I don't even know what roseberry is. Is it a special school with specifically trained staff that work towards getting children back to mainstream education or is it just a holding centre for when they don't have a place anywhere else?

Carresden · 25/07/2017 23:34

Harvey is a delightful engaging child who just needs a lot of help and understanding.

MeanAger · 25/07/2017 23:47

Given the right support and environment all children can be delightful and engaged. No child should be written off aged 7. Unfortunately we just do not invest anywhere near enough in adequate support and facilities for children who need extra help. Hell, we don't even invest enough for those that don't need extra support. Very few children in state school are getting all they need.

I've often wondered what the world would look like in 20/30/40 years if for just one generation of children they had every single need met from in utero to aged 18. What a world that might be.

Mistoffelees · 25/07/2017 23:47

You sound like you're writing his end of year report Carresden! I don't feel like it showed them getting 'to the bottom' of any of the children. I've watched similar programs before and they've shown strategies that work and the actual relationships between children and staff, this was missing a lot of that I felt. But that's not to say I thought the children were naughty and beyond help, just that the program didn't really show anything.

squiggletea · 25/07/2017 23:48

I wonder if the message was just that mainstream just don't have the resource to deal with the baggage some children have?

My heart melted when the little boy invited the new boy in.

AndNowItIsSeven · 25/07/2017 23:53

Stella and Harvey both showed strong signs of asd.

AndNowItIsSeven · 25/07/2017 23:54

Obviously Jared too , but he has a diagnosis.

Not sure what your point is theroot? Confused he is on the programme because he has been excluded from a class of 28 other children, no-one is under any illusions that he is a doddle to teach. We all saw the programme.

MeanAger · 26/07/2017 00:19

Like I said with the right support and environment all children can be delightful and engaged. A class of 29 other children and one teacher is not the right support or environment for Harvey at this time. Obviously.
