And can't wait for The handmaid's tale on Sunday having loved the book.

You all needed to know that obviously.

I think with Jamestown it's because that period of history isn't often covered, and I'm a history geek.

Right I'll shut up now.

But anyone else loving Jamestown?

I am, discovered it by chance and I love period dramas so thought I'd give it a watch!

I was a bit overexcited thinking Sean Bean was in it, until I realised the man who played Henry (?) was NOT Sean Bean Sad

I'm not sure how many replies you expected in the 15 mins between 07.35 and your bump Grin

I haven't watched it, although I was considering it. But then I read a review that said it includes rape. And I don't watch rape if I can possibly avoid it.

It's a shame because, as you say, that period of history is rarely covered and I would have been interested in it.

Yes I was a bit presumptuous, aha.

Yes there was a rape, but that did happen an awful lot in history, we can't gloss over it it . Wasn't graphic though. It's realistic I think, which a lot of period dramas aren't.

It's a romp isn't it and all the better for it. There are some excellent actors who seem to be really enjoying themselves. The actor playing Mercy is a revelation, I'm really loving her scenes, Alice is going to be busy with 3 men after her once a Henry reappears on the scene. I presume we will get a new boatload of bride's in series two. I'm a bit surprised that some of the wealthier men haven't already paid up for the bride shipping scheme.

I love it I love it! Yesss excited about handmaids tale too!

Wish they would stop with the hangings though.

Omg yes Mercy is really comedic and the perfect touchstone for Jocelyn's sass and politicking as they say.

Yes Verity's roots! I noticed them. Not sure if hair dye was available in those times but you would hope the producers would have taken note that they prob weren't available in a new American colony.

And just as dh isn't noticing what I'm typing right now, out of Alice's three choices, give me the blacksmith any day :)

What's it all about then? The trailers suggest a load of pouting women who obviously have access to a Babyliss bighair and an extensive range of make up?! I normally prefer period dramas a bit more gritty Can anyone give a synopsis?

It's one of the first settlements to the U.S. So they're finding their way with laws and society, relying on the Native Indians to help them at times, which actually happened and at other times fighting them for territorial reasons. And bringing European diseases with them!

But yeah some of the hair and make up etc comes across as anachronistic I agree.

JamesDelaneysHat very quick synopsis. A group of male settlers have paid to have won, not they do not know ,shipped from England to become their wives. The women on the boat have all chosen to leave England for varying reasons. They were paired off with the men as they disembarked at the quayside. The story concentrates on 3 women who have varying luck with the menfolk they are paired with. One is married to a drunk innkeeper, one falls in love with the brother of the man she is supposed to marry. The third is married to an official of the settlement, who she is determined to advance up the social ladder whether he wants it or not. The lack of women in the settlement also causes problems for the men who didn't pay out for a bride and now wish they hadn't.

Enjoyable (I fast forward the violence). It's not realistic: the women are clean and have perfect complexions for a start! And (thus far) also seem to "win out" more than seems realistic.

Wikipedia says the Native Americans in the area were virtually wiped out through disease and violence within only a few years of the settlement becoming established.

It's absolute tosh, but I am loving it! Not necessarily historically correct Grin and not to Downton abbey standards, but easy watching.

I had quick look on IMDB and because of an actor/actress not being in more than X amount of episodes, I'm hypothesising why! Won't say who as could be spoilers!
