The new Anne of Green Gables series

Anyone watching it? It's just started on Netflix. It'll be hard to live up to the 90s series though, as Megan Follows and Colleen Dewhurst were so perfect. But I suppose the Anne in this series is more true to the book in terms of looks and age. Megan F was possibly a tad too pretty and played 11yo Anne when she was 17 or 18.

I didn't know it was on! As soon as my sick 3 year old moves on from Blaze and the monster machines I'll check it out

Yay I have been waiting for a thread on this!!! I'm in Canada so already watched the whole thing when it was aired on TV earlier this year.

It's not completely true to the book but I (mostly) loved it.

I can't find it on Netflix!

For some reason it's called 'Anne with an E' on Netflix.

X post! It was just called "Anne" here when it was on TV.

Thank you!

Searched for Anne of green gables and it didn't come up as related - how daft is that?

I've watched the first 2 episodes now. No smashing of slates yet!

I've got a night in on my own tomorrow so I'll be binge watching this. I have all the other series on VHS, the only VHS I'm keeping as DVD is so expensive.

I also have an old BBC adaption, but only the second part as the BBC wiped the first part from the tape, or something like that.

I loved the casting of the last series, it was spot on, but not so keen on the direction some of the stories took.

I think it looks like it will be more along the lines of 'The Road To Avonlea', a series that is based on the books rather than sticking exactly to the books.

Oooh, I didn't know this was already up on Netflix. Can't wait.

I've watched it all, really enjoyed it and loved the casting. Much better than that godawful version that Martin Sheen was in last year!

Absolutely hated it !
Not everything needs an 'update' or to be real. Anne comes across as mildly deranged, the feminism is shoved down the audiences throat as though we could not possibly grasp a single nuance.
The characterisations are implausible, Matthew...?
It has none of the magic of the books, or the 1985 series. It saddens me that a whole generation will see this and think this is what Anne is.

I didn't care much for it, but I'm only on the first episode, so that might be unfair. It's not exactly following book dialogue at the moment. Will catch up with interest with the other episodes.

I watched the first episode last night with DD6 and DD11. It's certainly a lot darker than the 1980s version in parts as it delves into Anne's ore Green Gables childhood but I really liked it. It's rated a 12 and I'd say with good reason. I'm looking forward to the next episodes though I don't think youngest DD will join in.

I've watched it all. I started out enjoying it, liked the casting & loved the look of Green Gables - so stark & beautiful - but by the end really resented where they took the story. It's good & probably depicts the harshness of life at that time but it's not the Anne of Green Gables I love.

I am really enjoying it! I think it is beautifully shot - I love all the simple details of the interior of Green Gables and the school house is exactly how I had always imagined it! I think Marilla is perfectly cast - she has an amazing face, really expressive.

lt is a very interesting take on the original story, and I think it makes a lot of sense. Anne would have been traumatised by her experiences before Green Gables and she wouldn't have been instantly accepted by the community and children at school. I have watched a lot of it in tears.

It is going to take will power to stop myself from binge-watching the entire series!

The thing Is Anne was practical and because she had such a brilliant imagination she didn't let a lot of things grind her down. They have not got one character right in this at all. The 1985 series did a lot of departure from the original but got the characters right. There is nothing that resembles the original story.

I have to admit it's been a long time since I read the book so don't know which bits have changed and which are the same, but I'm up to episode 4 of this and I'm loving it. I think they did an excellent casting job with the girl who plays Anne, and I love Merilla and Matthew. I've spent most of the episodes in tears, though I am pregnant so could put that down to hormones!

Oh! So that's what anne with an E was. I am going to go and watch it now. I saw it featured earlier today but I had no clue what it was.

I watched the first three episodes yesterday. It departs a lot from the book. It is also not the Megan fellows version or if anyone is old enough to remember it is not the bbc version that was shown in the early 80s. As far as charcters go Mathew is spot on and so is Marilla except when they go away from the book. The whole Anne Shirley Cuthbert thing and signing the bible was just soooo wrong. I find the new Anne quite agrivating on some levels. Having said all that I find it quite gripping. It is a though somebody is looking at Anne with new eyes. Yes we have the plucky orphan but what perhaps is more realistic are people's reaction to her. I doubt that the good people of Avonlea would be so accepting of an orphan as portrayed in the book or the Megan fellows adaptation. We also see an the very human flawed Anne who will learn from her mistakes and survive.

In later episodes they go so far off the book that they should have written their own drama. They have Matthew totally wrong in episode 7. They've taken an absolute favourite of mine and completely changed it out of all recognition. It's lost it's humour completely. I am very angry about it!! 😡

I'm with Tomselleckhaskindeyes, what is so wrong with doing a faithful adaptation of the book? The 70s BBC version is still the best for me, though I like the first two Megan Follows adaptations as well (can't even approach the third).

If I watch the next series it will have to be in the mindset of it being totally unrelated to AoGG then I won't get so cross.

I would be interested to know what the reception to it was in Canada.
