Anyone else watching this? On Ch4 now. Looks fascinating ...

JuneFromBethesda Thu 23-Mar-17 21:08:09

Oh god, it's just too weird. I can't get my head round it AT ALL.

Why on EARTH would you want to marry someone who already has two wives??

TheSpottedZebra Thu 23-Mar-17 21:09:06

She's young isn't she - the new wife to be in that wooden house?

Toddlerteaplease Thu 23-Mar-17 21:10:25

He kissed the first wife first at his second wedding. Second wife seemed more of an afterthought. He's not even good looking!

JuneFromBethesda Thu 23-Mar-17 21:10:37

She's 25! Looks like a young 25 too - I mean she seems quite docile, not very worldly ...

GatherlyGal Thu 23-Mar-17 21:10:47

Yes so tempting. One of several wives PLUS you get to live in a cardboard cabin. Sounds awesome.

JuneFromBethesda Thu 23-Mar-17 21:11:34

His wives all look quite similar. That seems a bit creepy.

TheSpottedZebra Thu 23-Mar-17 21:12:18

I can - sort of -understand polygamy in a culture where half of all males are being killed in never ending wars, and the women have no rights anyway, but how the hell is it justified in 2016/7 ?

And what happens to all the 'spare' men, if those that do marry, marry plurally ?

Toddlerteaplease Thu 23-Mar-17 21:12:20

Yes I thought that.

GuinessPunch Thu 23-Mar-17 21:12:44

Did she give birth with knickers on?

GatherlyGal Thu 23-Mar-17 21:14:26

yes and a huge audience.

miserablemolly Thu 23-Mar-17 21:14:57

I believe in Utah, where lots of the polygamist Mormons live, there's huge issues with young men basically being rendered homeless because older men chase them away. If the goal is to have multiple wives there's just not enough women to go around.

As a lifestyle I have no problem with it but it doesn't work in a community type setting.

TheSpottedZebra Thu 23-Mar-17 21:16:14

Really, molly Yikes!

Alconleigh Thu 23-Mar-17 21:16:22

How are they so slim and groomed with so many kids?! I realise this is not the point.......

JuneFromBethesda Thu 23-Mar-17 21:16:34

I hadn't thought about the 'leftover' men grin

GatherlyGal Thu 23-Mar-17 21:17:52

But Molly the community IS the lifestyle.

JuneFromBethesda Thu 23-Mar-17 21:17:53

Lots of happy family hikes up the rock, Alconleigh? grin

viques Thu 23-Mar-17 21:18:16

Guinness that's what I thought, forget the polygamy show us the birthing knickers.

I suppose they are standard crotchless Anne Summers, but made of a sensible cotton/Lycra mix.

Alconleigh Thu 23-Mar-17 21:20:27

I walk everywhere, have no kids and look like a bag lady in comparison 😀.

I can see the attraction of raising your family in a commune type setting, with support and shared childcare etc, but actually sharing the husband.....hmm.

JuneFromBethesda Thu 23-Mar-17 21:20:31

Actually I can see the appeal of being part of a close-knit community, lots of help and support bringing up children, great fun for the kids having so many other children to play with.

BUT

The overwhelming patriarchy of it ... women reduced to accessories to the great man, their purpose in life to present him with as many children as possible ... ugh

GatherlyGal Thu 23-Mar-17 21:21:46

I agree June so hard to understand what's in it for the women.

TheSpottedZebra Thu 23-Mar-17 21:21:59

Coffee??????? Isn't that forbidden?

This chap is AWFUL.

JuneFromBethesda Thu 23-Mar-17 21:21:59

Almost exact crosspost Alconleigh grin

JuneFromBethesda Thu 23-Mar-17 21:23:02

'Life would be easier with one wife' but fortunately I'm man enough to cope with three hmm

JayZed Thu 23-Mar-17 21:23:35

The TLC show about polygamy is better, all the sister wives low key hate each other. This just feels like they're taught to smile and accept what their husband says
