BBC dramatisation based on the kidnapping of Shannon Matthews. Starts Tuesday 7th February 9pm, starring Sheridan Smith.

Obviously a horrendous crime against a young child so I wasn't sure I'd want to watch, but it looks like it focuses on friends of the mother who headed up the search and barely features the child herself.

I love Sheridan Smith too so will give it a go.

I'm looking forward too.

The clips I've seen really reminded me of that time.

A bit too recent to make a Drama out of it IMO.... Does anyone know the the fmaily were invovled in this?

It doesn't feature shannon matthews as a character apparently it's about how a local community coped with it all. It's very local to me so there was a bit on local news about it

why they need to drag this up again I don't know,

just a story about a scummy stupid mother.

I'll be watching ...its hard to believe shes 18 now ...the same age I was when it happened. The grandparents aren't happy and made a valid about the fact it portrays little or none of shannon herself and her experience. It's tricky...

I think one of the most shocking things about this is that Karen was viewed as inferior jeremy kyle fodder but managed to fool everybody that also invokes such fury, how dare the likes of her get the better of us!

HalfShell I just came on here to say the same thing!

It is fascinating that she fooled everybody for so long. I read a book about the case ages ago - Betrayed from Birth I think it was - and I felt that Karen was as much a victim as anybody. Which is not to excuse what she did of course.

"Betrayed from Birth" by Rose Martin. Highly recommended and actually very shocking.

Oh wow that sounds a good book , I'll be go ogling the case itself was so the tip of the iceberg wasn't it? The uncle lost contact with his own daughter for v. Strange reasons, the paedophile boyfriend...Julia Bushby said she didn't have the brains to do this herself ....well she obviously did! Hmm oh her and a mentally vulnerable man..it just begs belief all of it..

Actually I don't think the mother will be the focus of this. Despite the horrific thing she did, that community did themselves proud looking for that wee lassie, and they came together and did their damndest to find her. I think the people of Dewsbury Moor should be proud of themselves for the way they united and really put their all into finding her. They didn't know her awful mother was responsible. So I hope it's going to be focusing on the community spirit and generosity, not the actual crime itself.

Yes i saw an interview with Sheridan Smith a while ago it is about a neighbour and the wider community . I think i will watch it and see what it is like.

The trailers looked good and as someone else said, this was local to me so heard about it all the way through

There was an interview with the director (I think) on the radio earlier.
The family had nothing to do with it and Shannon herself wasn't even asked.
The director got very defensive saying that it wasn't about Shannon at all, it's about the support network around the mother.

As for her fooling everyone, I know it makes me sound smug but she didn't fool me at all.

I just feel for Shannon, this is going to be incredibly hard for her to see, she is only 18.

DesolateWaist · 07/02/2017 21:24

She lives with her grandparents now. They had nothing to do with it.
It's wrong really that she will be watching this at the same time as the rest of us.

Was Karen Matthews ever diagnosed with a personality disorder? Her behaviour is so strange. She seemed to lap up the attention.

On GMB this morning a reporter who worked the case at the time suggested he thought the police knew very early on that Karen and the boyfriend were involved as the press weren't moved on and were allowed to do all sorts of things they weren't usually allowed to - as if the police were hoping the press would assist in flushing them out.
