Vera Farmiga is just so wonderful in it, particularly when Norman starts going batshit and she is desperately trying to keep everything together, it is the best acting I've seen on telly in years.

At first I thought it was one of those daft teenage things, but it gets a grip of you

It's dark but also heartwarming (haven't finished it yet though)

I tried it when it was new and couldn't get past the opening/early really violent scene of a woman being beaten (iirc). Should I have stuck with it? I thought it looked promising but didn't think that scene would end Shock

Yes that was a hard hitting scene but important for creating admiration for Norma and the protective bond between her and Norman. Those actors carry the show but I thought the plot wore thin later on. They are dragging it out too much and should bring it to a dramatic ending in my opinion.

Haven't seen it - is it the back story to Psycho?

Yes it is but set in modern day with a 50s/60s twist so not exactly the original setting but very close. It is interesting.

Thanks! I was wondering what to watch next. Just finished the OA which i enjoyed, and now on Prison Break which is enjoyable crap. Nothing comes close to Breaking Bad IMO - sounds like I might like Bates Motel?

Me and DH love it! Vera Farmiga is amazing. I think we are a bit behind though, thank you for the reminder AF!

Freddie Highmore is amazing too - think there was a bit of a slumpy phase with all the weed farming, but they didn't make the mistake of making too many series.

Yes, Freddie Highmore is really good, it chills me to the bone every time he says 'Mother'. I find the relationships between Norma and both sons very interesting and I think they have done well to link it into the Psycho film. I really like the fact that it is set in the modern day but has clear links back to 1950s/60s

I found the weed farming a tad tedious as well Wink

Reviving this old thread as BBC have been showing this and I've just finished watching series 2 - I love it! Is anyone else late to the party, discovering this for the first time?

@RustyPaperclip Yes, the way he says "Mother" is chilling... the actor has totally nailed it. I looked him up on Wiki and discovered that he is the son of the actor who played Leo in Howard's Way. This is very weird, as I can see a family resemblance now and then, although the roles played are worlds apart.

I am slightly bemused by the rising body count - that town is clearly a very dangerous place! Romero is an interesting character - talk about being above the law! The series has tones of Twin Peaks and also American Gothic (showing my age here). The lead actress is very talented and apparently won awards for the role.

This series has really stayed with me. I watched it so ready to blame her and wow what an emotional roller coaster Id love a thread for those who've seen it all as I have so many questions but don't want to post spoilers. I watched it last year and I'm tempted to just start again.

Well, I just saw the episodes featuring Rhianna as Marion - very cleverly done and I love the twist on the original story. Freddy Highmore is absolutely superb and the writing is very clever. I wonder how much research the writers did into people suffering from multiple personality/dissassociative/psychotic disorders, and how realistic the portrayal is, because although this is fiction there are people suffering such disorders in RL. There was a lot packed into these two episodes, in respect of Norman totally unravelling but also gaining some insight into the truth of his own illness.

I'm looking forward to watching the final two episodes when they air on BBC1 next week, but will also be sad to see the end of such an absorbing series.
