The Great Interior Design Challenge 2017 ... CONTINUED

Starting this one as I finished last one...

So, Daniela I think will win as it looks like it's been written/plotted that way since the beginning..

I don't think Daniela is either outstandingly good or bad - she's fine, she's okay.

That's why the mega enthusiasm of the judges is so weird.

The first time she appeared, Daniel and Kelly bigger her up so much, I thought - 'Does she know them?' - it was just like ridiculous.

But here she is in the final - quelle surprise!

Saw it coming from her first appearance and it had nothing to do with her design - and everything to do with what the judges were signalling in the voiceover.

'Hey viewers, Daniela is good, good good...'

Bit brainwashy without ever really explaining why she is better than the others.

I don't think she's bad - but there is not enough discernible difference to justify the bigging up that she gets.

Written in the stars eh?

I liked her designs last night but was underwhelmed previously. Richard had do go. I didn't like his rooms, nice guy though!

I agree it's a bit too glossy for my taste, but I think it's cohesive and she's been far better than any of the other contestants who have been voted off. Her rooms look like they could be in a magazine, even if you don't like the style. Compare that to Richards, for example, which just loooked like a mess.

My favourite in all the series has been the black parrots lady who won last year. I think she did the orange room! She was great.

I really liked her hand painted wallpaper. I thought that was a great idea. Richard would be better pursuing a technical career like product design maybe.

I don't dispute that she was, certainly on this project, better than Richard.

My main point is that Richard was doomed from the start - utterly hobbled by the homeowner.

So, being the 'wildcard' was pointless - it wasn't really an opportunity to get in the final.

If Daniela was so shit hot - they should have give her Mrs Beige and the boxrooms and seen how she got on there.

Instead they gave the strongest candidate (based on the fact she was already in the final) the easiest/best house.

They gave Daniela two already good rooms and a flexible, willing homeowner and gave Richard two box rooms full of inherited brown furniture which the homeowner fundamentally didn't want changed.

I don't think the homeowner was actually up for the game at all - she wouldn't have let Daniela, Kelly or Daniel change her home so why bother participating?

Sure Richard was weaker than Daniela - he was the 'best' loser - so how come Daniela got to play against him?

Why not either of the other two guys?

Because Daniela is being gifted a pass to the final to fit with some production 'narrative' which has already been written/recorded.

She'll be in the final against the stage set guy - I can see her winning.

I'm not going to stop watching.

I just wish TV companies could go with the spirit of competition and stop 'constructing reality' - it's fecking annoying and very, very patronising - because we've all got eyes and we can see what you're doing.

I get what you're saying, and you could well be right about there being a bias towards Daniella from the start. But don't you think even if she's been given the box rooms she'd have done a much better job than Richard?

And say Oliver, Daniella and the stage set guy were destined to be in the final, since they have clearly been the strongest candidates, then one of them was always going to go up against a much weaker contestant / wild card. So the same accusation could always have been thrown to them.

I think Oliver will be in the final with her. Think he has a much less themey style.

I agree that Richard had the odds stacked against him, with shite rooms and an interfering owner. She needed a decorator, not a designer!

The mural (she did say 'muriel'!) was rubbish. Amateurish. I'd imagine it's been promptly painted over.

I liked Richard's rooms more than some seem to have! I like his oversized headboards.

Bluehouse's living room felt like it had had all the furniture and 'objets' pushed up against the window so you couldn't see the view. I don't understand Kelly's approving comment that you don't just come into the room and look out of the window – what's wrong with that? Confused

But I do note that Bluehouse has since put the chaise in the window, which is a lovely idea.

I don't get why Daniela thought the chaise was utterly indispensable and 'nothing else would possibly do' in that spot, though. And I think she's got a big ego.

Daniella's flaw, to me, is that her rooms don't look 'pulled together'. There may be good things in them - I actually rather liked that wood-strip wall, even if it looked like a million corporate spaces - but taken together, for me her rooms just don't blend in a way that pleases my sense of 'rightness'. And I don't personally think that a collection of design pieces put together, however good they are individually, necessarily makes a pleasing whole unless you have the right eye.

Her own house is exactly the same, what we've seen of it. Bits and bobs of 'design statements' scattered about and the godawful bulldog lamp! Bloody hell!

But for me, Richard and Oliver DO have that knack of being able to create harmonious rooms. So yes, it's a great shame they've ended up in the same round and one will have to go out.

However having said all the above, I think I'm hopelessly old-fashioned and Daniella's helter-skelter-ness is what the judges like. So what do I know? Grin

The thing is I don't think Daniela would have done better than Richard with the box rooms, simply because that homeowner would have stopped her.

Whoever got that homeowner, at any stage of the competition, would have lost - no matter how good they were.

That homeowner had no interest in working with the designer.
As Sapphire says, she just wanted a painter and decorator.

It was painful to watch her undermining Richard at every step of the way and breaking his confidence with every negative whine and wheedle.

I totally take the point Screamer, that whoever faced Richard would have been at an advantage - soooo, why was Daniela chosen to have that advantage?

It was hard enough for Richard being the wildcard and up against any of 3 really strong contestants - but then to be thrown a homeowner who didn't want to play the game was like having one arm tied behind your back and then being blindfolded.

They may as well have kicked him in the nadgers and pushed him down the stairs too.

Perhaps they (Kelly Hoppen & Daniel) should just have explained to the audience why they chose Daniela to have the advantage of going against the wildcard?

And having a nicer pair or rooms. And nicer homeowners.

Is the other semi-final tonight?

And the final on Thursday?

The whole thing is probably so contrived as to have a 'battle of the sexes' at the end - man designer against woman designer - like the Apprentice.

Sometimes the BBC really fecks me off with its prissyness.

Grin Yes I think the homeowner would have kicked Richard up the backside like a naughty puppy if she'd got the chance. She wasn't impressed with him at all. Grin

You couldn't put books on Daniela's bookcase. Ok for ornaments etc but nowhere for the books to rest against. I thought the way that Richard defined the craft/bed room by using a block of colour on the ceiling was genius...one of the cleverest things I've ever seen in the series. My big bugbear are bedrooms where the designers don't put in curtains that block out the light; might look good but who wants to wake up at the crack of dawn in the summer. As for covering up radiators and televisions; don't see the point. Where do you put the tv cover when you want to watch it?? And ripping up carpets and leaving bare floorboards that haven't been sanded/painted/varnished etc. And lightbulbs dangling in mid air. Not much good if you have cats/dogs/grandchildren. Having said all this I love the series and tend to rip my house apart and paint/relocate everything when it's on. Makes me look afresh at my own house. Was really upset on Monday when I based my whole day around watching TGIDC at 8 only to realise at 7:30 that it wasn't on.

And most flat leases would not let you have floorboards or woden floors because of sound probs....one flat was def. upstairs but got stripped floorboards...no chance

Just to want to quickly ask if anyone else is annoyed by Nicholas' voice? He really reminds me of the blonde woman off the previous series, in the end I had to put subtitles on and turn the sound off when she was speaking, it was impossibly grating! Now Nicholas has a very similar manner of speaking Confused, it hurts my ears!
