They have decided against bringing back good night sweetheart, even though it was Universally praised.

But bizarrely they will be renewing the terrible Porridge remake everyone in the world, and on Mars Hated.

I wonder if ITV will pick up Goodnight Sweetheart like they did with Birds of a feather, does anyone want to contact them and enquire here: [email protected]?

Thank fuck. 30 years later it would be nice if someone could come up with a novel idea.

But Porridge isn't original is it, it's over 40 years old?

The new episode of Goodnight Swt. was very good. I think it all depends on the writing new or old.

I really enjoyed the Goodnight Swetheart revival ep. Thought it was well done and there's still places for it to go.

I liked Young Hyacinth as well but think that might have worked better as a comedy drama rather than a sitcom.

The Porridge thing was awful though. Can't believe that's the one they've picked for a full series Confused

It was shite. No need to carry it on at all.

Porridge is also shite. I meant new ideas in general.

Get watching still game on the bbc tonight, it's been around for a few years but id be very pleased at another series after this one Grin

I enjoyed watching the goodnight sweetheart revival, I have fond memories of watching it when I was younger but I don't feel the need for more episodes.

Just because something is new doesn't make it good though. There ain't much really new. A sitcom about the man in the moon or under the sea, Oh and I forgot Spongebob!! ? Though there was that terrible Mork and Mindy.

there was that terrible Mork and Mindy

And the even worse Mork and Mindy cartoon...

i didn't know they made a Mork and Mindy cartoon Jason {grin] I suppose it COULD'VE been good if it was made well.

It wasn't, it was made in the early 80's when Hanna-Barbera productions were shitting out any old cartoons.

There was very very nearly "Scooby Doo and the Fonz" too. Where Scooby Shaggy and the Fonz solved mysteries....

... which sounds liek one of my primary school stories.

Cheery - thanks for the heads up on Still Game, I'd no idea it was on - just series linked it! I actually liked the new porridge but I also liked the new goodnight - all the rest in the remakes series were naff though, and depressing really as I thought some of them would bring back happy memories of days of yore haha, but the Are you being served was just awful. There was one really good new pilot recently about school run mums/dads with Anna Maxwell Martin and Lucy Punch, can't for the life of me remember what is was called but hope they make it a series

Goodnight sweetheart was awful and so misogynist. The poor present day wife was played as this horrible career bitch who pretty much deserved Gary cheating with this perfect 40s babe (who was far more proper and less modern)
Watching an affair, including a child, played out for laughs is pretty shit.

I just don't get why they re-amped them all int first place when there must be so much new and funny talent around?

Or have they run out of ideas? BBC used to make some really innovative comedy before BBC3 was axed. I like stuff like Camping Pulling Nighty Night etc.

I find these re-vamps, whatever you want to call them, sad! I'm waiting for Last of the Summer Wine and Just Good Friends (the care home years) to emerge next Grin

Re-vamped. I'd like a re-amped version of Goodnight Sweetheart by the band Slaves!

The Porridge one was awful. Wooden, stilted & totally unfunny.

Well poldarks the 40s woman WOULD be less modern wouldn't she? I liked the comparisons.

Gary didn't come across as much of a hero.

It was still a clever and well written and acted sitcom.

PoldarksBreeches · 08/10/2016 11:44

Yes of course she was - it was the way the programme held her up as the ideal wife whilst the modern career woman was a harridan who almost deserved being cheated on that I objected to.
They could have made the programme without Gary having a modern day wife and the theme would still have worked.

Porridge was terrible, all the Twitter tv critics I follow seemed to praise it, I guess that's why it got a series because nobody else I know who watched it enjoyed it at all.

I have a soft spot for Gary Sparrow, I'd have liked a new series - the creators have said that the BBC don't want it but it's open for other channels to pick up so there's hope yet!

ShelaghTurner · 08/10/2016 11:50

She wasn't held up as the ideal wife at all, she was a pain in the arse. And bearing in mind it was written in 1993 and we've come a long way since then, just maybe the new series would have redressed the balance. Certainly the pilot had started to do that. Besides, Gary was always a twat. I'm not sure many people had sympathy with him.

Ah I would have liked a new series of Goodnight Sweetheart. I loved the old one, and the one off was good :-(

Poldark Gary was never the hero at all, most of the time he was portrayed as the villian and the last laugh was on him, he never came out of the situations a winner.
