I think I heard somewhere that they are going to get rid of the rape scene. Will Elizabeth fight him off ? Will George come in and save her. Or will it just be a straightforward bonk

drwitch I also heard this but I heard it would become a consensual love scene Hmm

It's all terribly PC isn't it, this new version.

Report
beguilingeyes · 06/10/2016 19:30

Very PC...they said it was going to be grittier, but they're all very clean and beautiful and there's almost no drinking or smoking. Also, the two wife murders were apparently accidents.

It's very sanitised. One scene in the original which shocked me a bit was when they threw Charlie Kempthorne off the cliff after he betrayed them all. Don't suppose we'll see that....

And while I'm at it, I wish to God they'd stop saying Kill-a-warren Angry and who is Nick 'Viggus' 🙄😤

so will Morwenna's sister be older then?

Dulra · 07/10/2016 13:19

Wondered how they'd deal with the rape scene because it would turn people off ross which is not what they'd want. Maybe they'll have forcefully trying but not succeeding don't think it would work if it was consensual

I heard that the production will depict it as consensual. The shag/rape has to happen in some form for, er, narrative reasons.

He has to succeed because Valentine. At the moment it looks very mutual.

Sorry to be a terrible killjoy and what not but i've asked mumsnet to edit the title so it's clear this thread is for spoilers from the books.

I will back out now and try to forgot eveything i've read. Blush

It's for spoilers from the books and the previous series. Basically somewhere for those of us who know the stories to talk about what's coming.

I'd forgotten about that rape scene, and I've only recently read the books so little excuse, well I'm up to book seven so far. I thought we were talking about Morwenna's repugnant future husband.

Yes we've got all that to come. And Rowella is 15 when she comes to stay, I wonder what they'll do with that. And who will play Osborne? He must be due to start filming soon if they're finishing Warleggan this series.

They are going to show Ross and Elizabeth as 'let us spend one night together and then we must go out separate ways ' aren't they. Ross is going to tell Demelza he is with the smugglers, only it will all kick off with the excise men and he'll be rumbled.

Thus missing that awful night when Demelza knew she was losing him to Elizabeth.

I was wondering how they will establish a consensual relationship between Ross and Elizabeth, as in the book I think he was so furiously angry with Elizabeth for agreeing to marry George that he rode over to Trenwith and broke into her bedroom. But the timing of their affair will have to be just before she marries George, so that Aunt Agatha can cause George to question Valentine's paternity.

hey, can I join? I have read all the books and loved them - yes even the mining - and I'm really upset with what they've done to Ross's character in the show.

There is just no narrative consistency whatsoever, and the relationships between Ross and Demelza and Ross and Elizabeth are completely wrong. If you hadn't read the books - what would you understand of what's going on? That Elizabeth is a wonderful, gentle soul who still holds a candle for Ross, Demelza a nagging harpy who is never happy and neglects her child, and Ross a bit simple in the head but altogether, given the circumstances, justified in indulging in a bit of flirting with Elizabeth.

In (book) reality Elizabeth is cold and superficial, clinging to Ross out of pure neediness after Francis dies, teasing him and tempting him for financial security; Demelza is a devoted mother and wife who keeps her morals even when everyone around her has forgotten what morals even are (glad they kept her speech to Verity about keeping her faith in Ross, but it made no sense in the context of the series!). And Ross? Ross is a bit of a shit who confuses power for lust and weakness for consent and devotion for weakness.

TBH i can't see how this will be a rape now but without it being a rape the whole moral arc of Ross and the evolution of his relationship with Demelza will not make any sense.

Overall I'm very disappointed.

applauds DHs determination to make the Ross and Elizabeth thing entirety consensual is throwing the whole story out of wack. And why is Demelza so whiny and awful. Demelza in the books is spirited and witty.

The scenes of George boxing do my head in as well. George wouldn't dream of soiling his hands with anything like that.

Looks like I got it wrong about Demelza not being abandoned for Elizabeth. I now expect Elizabeth to throw herself at him. I watched some of the 1975 scenes last week. They had a simple scene where he told Elizabeth that he loved her and not Demelza. From that 3 minutes of TV, you could understand all Demelza's fear and loathing of Elizabeth. We've had nothing like that this time round.

Dulra · 17/10/2016 08:29

So from last night's episode it looks like they are sticking a bit to the book. Ross finding out Elizabeth is marrying George, Ross is furious and goes to her with demelza begging her not to. What will happen though when he's there? I think they will have him angry with Elizabeth and then making a move with her initially resisting but then consensualy going for it lol. Agree summymeg that demelza's coldness to Elizabeth made no sense in last night's episode there was only a hint of her resentment of the situation when she mentions to verity last week that he's spending a lot of time at trenwith.

Not sure how far some of you have read on in the books, I am on the angry tide and I am getting increasingly irritated with both demelza's and ross's characters

I have read all the books and love them, also can recite passages from them, and feeling a bit disappointed. I thought the original series was much closer to the books.

Report
Sunnymeg · 17/10/2016 14:12

I think that they are so determined to make sure that this series differs from the 1975 version, that they are sacrificing the plot and character exposition just to make sure that they do something different with the source material. It's such a pity.

Report
beguilingeyes · 18/10/2016 14:52

And where is the humour. There is so much humour in the books, Ross and Demelza have a great relationship (most of the time) where they tease each other a lot. This Demelza just whines all the time.
