Anyone watching? Helena looks good!

EsmesBees Fri 20-May-16 21:45:27

She looks amazing! I'm not convinced by the programme though. All this cutesy fish out of water quirky midlander in Intellectual London thing isn't quite working for me.

heyhulahoop Fri 20-May-16 21:47:48

Yes I'm finding it a bit annoying so far.

LottieDoubtie Fri 20-May-16 21:49:02

I'm quite enjoying it so far. missed the first 5 mins though.

Sparklingbrook Fri 20-May-16 21:49:23

I am watching but getting increasingly hmm and confused

heyhulahoop Fri 20-May-16 21:49:25

Love the house though!

everdene Fri 20-May-16 21:49:36

The book is HILARIOUS but this is quite disappointing sad

Why is Alan Bennett now called Malcolm Tanner?

heyhulahoop Fri 20-May-16 21:50:07

Kind of feels like it should have a Sunday teatime slot rather than a Friday night...

Sparklingbrook Fri 20-May-16 21:50:48

It feels a bit CBBC drama.

AgentProvocateur Fri 20-May-16 21:51:38

I HATED the book, everdene. Just as well we've all got different tastes smile

LemonRedwood Fri 20-May-16 21:52:55

Prefer the book so far. Think it would be much better with the "characters" from the book rather than made up people.

Don't mind Alan Bennett being a grumpy old sod because he's Alan Bennett. Malcolm Tanner is just an annoying grumpy old sod.

SuperFlyHigh Fri 20-May-16 22:00:04

I quite like it actually and halfway through book. Funny

Ankleswingers Fri 20-May-16 22:04:02

Baffled me more as it got nearer the end. confused

Not read the book so that probably explains why.

Davros Fri 20-May-16 22:09:03

I'll join this thread as I'm Billy No Mates on the other one blush
I enjoyed it but I'm baffled by the AB character who isn't AB. He must have refused to be portrayed but he was in the book and involved in the RL events so don't understand that one. Not bad for a first episode

jay55 Fri 20-May-16 23:06:41

AB complained about the book saying he'd never fixed a washing machine. So maybe they've had to fictionalise it further to not piss people off.

It was OK, nice early 80's nostalgia and Faye Marsay was terrific as Nina.

I agree that it doesn't feel right they've fictionalised Alan Bennett. The George character played by HBC has also been fictionalised - if I hadn't read the book or didn't know the backstory I think I'd have enjoyed the programme a bit more.

Davros Sat 21-May-16 15:07:16

They seem to be the same characters but with different names.

ChippyMinton Sat 21-May-16 15:22:29

Just watched it but thought it a bit lame.
Would someone mind explaining the backstory please?

Loopsdefruits Sat 21-May-16 16:29:12

Ok, I enjoyed this, but am I the only one who is confused about the no shoes thing?

hollyisalovelyname Sat 21-May-16 17:26:09

I thought it was so boring.
I thought it was a one off drama.
I don't think I'll bother next week.
Helena Bonham Carter looks lovely dressed normally and not as she usually dresses - charity shop explosion style.

AugustaFinkNottle Sat 21-May-16 19:02:39

I'm not sure I can stand much more of Nina saying "nucular". It really sets my teeth on edge.

FuckoffDM Sun 22-May-16 09:31:44

I agree that it seemed like a kids programme (except for some of the language)
Haven't read the book so I didn't have any expectations.

The80sweregreat Sun 22-May-16 09:36:13

I Havent read the book but I found this awful and went and did something else when they were talking about the crabs at the dinner table! Is it a true story? My dh really fancies HBC so he didn't find it too bad. Attention to detail with the 80s style Sainsbury's carrier bag I noticed. Wont be watching any more i'm afraid.

Davros Sun 22-May-16 10:01:47

It seems clear that having read the book makes a massive difference. I would probably agree with all the negative comments if I hadn't read it but I will persist because I have a lot of affection for it. Also it might improve after the first episode and its adapted by Nuck Hornby so there's hope.
