My mum has lent me her box set. I'm hooked, it's brilliant! Anyone else remember this? I think they should repeat it on TV.

It's normally shown on ITV Encore. It is on at the moment in two loops, one from series 2 and one from series 4. You are right, it is fantastic and well worth watching.

It's phenomenal. One of the best things I've seen. S4 was particularly good IMO.

You mean the original, yes? Fantastic telly! I watched it the first time round - I don't remember the very first episodes, but I definitely remember watching I Dies From Love and Why Is Her Door Locked as a child, and then following the rest and being inconsolable after the final episode of s5. I bought the entire run on video as soon as it was available, and now I have it on DVD. Where are you up to? I agree with scarlets about s4 which has some terrific acting in it, though I do love the earlier episodes with Pauline Collins in them - Sarah was a brilliant character.

Did you watch the spinoff, "Thomas and Sarah", Mornington? I quite enjoyed it but it has its detractors.

Yes, Pauline Collins is fantastic in it. She's such a brilliant actress, I also loved her in Bleak House and more recently Dickensian
My parents watched Jack and Sarah, sadly I was too young to remember it, I may have to try and source it

Yes, I love Thomas and Sarah - it's delightfully mad. The Biters Bit still has me roaring with laughter in places, and Putting on the Ritz I think ranks as one of the best TV programmes ever made. It's very different in feel from Upstairs Downstairs though, so anyone expecting a straightforward sequel/spinoff might be disappointed - I suspect some of its detractors are in that camp.

I couldn't get into Dickensian, much as I wanted to watch Pauline Collins.

I enjoyed Return to Gethyn. It was interesting to learn about Thomas's roots.

I discovered it years after broadcast, one Sunday afternoon on ITV. I too own the box set and me and DH have just finished watching it [str] for the twentieth time [/str]. Oh, how I love it.

That's annoying for you BirthdayBetty I watch it every time its on. There are some dud episodes but most of them are very good. Agree about Pauline Collins, I like the character Rose too, interesting that she wrote it with Eileen Atkins. Maybe that's why it's so good

You all know that Simon Williams is playing an elderly city type on The Archers ATM ?

In my opinion, Series 4 is the best, everyone is at the top of their game. When series 5 was filmed, ITV commissioned some extra episodes which are stand alone stories and were interspersed through the last series, which detract from it as an overall story.

Simon Williams was also my first real crush, his Captain James is a wonderfully written flawed character who is thwarted by upbringing and circumstance.

Met him in 1974 and was besotted.
I loved the series.....Lady Marjorie going down on the Titanic, Rose losing all her money in the Crash, and Ruby. Bless her.

I loved the James character. The war pretty much broke him. It was devastating.

I find Anthony Andrews very attractive and he was definitely my favourite!

Rachel Gurney was so beautiful.

the last episode when Rose takes one last look a round the house makes me well up; I can feel the sadness and nostalgia at leaving ...boohoohoo

Oh I loved this and I also have the whole lot on VHS, which is inconvenient as I am not sure we still have a working VCR! Hmm, must investigate it as a DVD box set some time.

I am not really sure which is my favourite as it was all so wonderful but I do particularly like the one where the King comes to dinner and Sarah turns up in labour.

Years ago I remember reading a book which had the back story of some of the main characters. Wish I could find that again.

Ah I have the theme tunes going round in my head now!
