Hinterland one-off

I've just found out that there was a one-off feature-length episode of this. I'm not sure if it aired on UK-wide TV or just BBC Wales.

Does anyone know a) where I can get it (it's not on iPlayer) and b) if I need to have watched it to make sense of the second series?

DP and I just discovered this series and after some searching, are watching season 2 without having found the special. I don't think it matters too much - the basic outline is given. He screwed up, a woman died.

I'm enjoying the show but it is relentlessly grim! Reminds me a bit of Justified, with its bearded, angry, poverty stricken hillsmen. Not a production from the Welsh tourist board, that's for sure!

Yes, grim is a fair description. Grin He's one of the most hunted-looking protagonists I've seen!

Yes, certainly doesn't look like the Aber I remember from student days! Still beautifully shot though, if in a very grey grim way!

The one-off explains what happened to his daughter but it's a standalone, you don't have to see it to be able to follow series 2.
I love Hinterland - as a former Aber student I love spotting various places I knew. It's definitely not the lively atmosphere I remember, but series 2 is great, very brooding! A lot is clearly being left Unsaid at the moment. My recall of Welsh is getting better, I can now make out the individual words although I still need the subtitles!

Looseattheseams - yes I wish they would film in summer with the student party atmosphere that I remember but that probably wouldn't suit the Scandi Noir effect they're going for; that would be more Midsomer Murders or Morse/Lewis I guess!

Bettys I know! I was starting to wonder if I was imagining it. That might explain why they never film on the Penglais campus and/or in Summer - too many students looking cheerful in the sunshine!
I'm delighted to hear there's another series coming. It seems to be going from strength to strength.

I'm pleased there'll be a third series too, although I'm still working through Series 2 now.

I may have to look up illegally the standalone one. I do feel that there are a few references in the first few episodes of Series 2 that I'm not getting; for example, the thing with his partner being questioned by their boss and the IPCC about his conduct at the case in the standalone. She defends him but I get the impression she actually thinks he is at fault?

We started watching series 2 on the Welsh channel with subtitles. I really could not get my head around what we missed, so thanks for pointing it out. Also the subtitles finish before the end of the film for some reason...

The standalone is good for Mathias's backstory. Still waiting to find out the big mystery around Prosser, the police chief. Clearly he has some secret in his past and something going on in the present. Liked the shot of him looking into the broken mirror in the last episode!
Mared seems to support Mathias through gritted teeth - she disapproves when he goes outside police procedure but despite that remains loyal to him (and despite him being brought in to run her case in the first episode!)

I'm really confused by Hinterland. I've seen them all in Welsh, but I'm confused as to whether the English ones are being aired nationwide.

For us in Wales, the final one is on Bbbc tomorrow at 9, but I don't know if this is the case elsewhere.

The first series was definitely on nationwide in English (with the Welsh subtitled).

As far as I can tell, the second series hasn't been on nationwide TV and I suspect it won't be, mainly because the one-off was only ever on iPlayer, not on actual TV; plus there was some publicity for the first series but I've seen none for this one.

I guess that might mean it's not that popular outside of Wales? I don't know why. I think it's excellent.

It's not on in England yet (I've been watching it on iPlayer thanks to a tipoff from Welsh friends) but I think I've seen clips from it in trailers for BBC4 Drama so it might be coming on there. It's perfect for the BBC4 Scandi slot on Saturdays.

I think it's fantastic, everyone involved should be proud of what they've produced. I love the bilingual thing, it really makes you think about the fact that millions of people in UK dont actually conduct day to day life in English!
I do wish I could get hold of the standalone episode though. Desperate to know what happened with his daughter. We're in England, and I saw no advertising if it anywhere.
Apparently 600,000 people watched the nationwide version, which seems so few when you consider the quality of the programme.

Welsh and English with subtitles for the Welsh. I've only ever seen Matthias speak in English although the link below says he does speak Welsh and the Welsh only version is on S4C

The second series is bilingual so far, with most of the police staff switching between both languages and Matthias speaking exclusively English.

I assume that's part of the story/character? Does the fact that he's not a Welsh-speaker add to the characterisation of him as a bit of an outsider? I find it interesting to see when the other police characters speak Welsh – generally to the suspects/people they interview. Is it a way of saying 'I'm one of you and you can trust me'? Getting on side, as it were, with the locals?

I like all the police officer characters (though I'm wondering if DI Rhys moved house in the one-off episode? She seems to be in a Victorian detached house now, whereas before she was in a small terraced sixties type house, and wasn't her mum living with them? What happened there?)

Yes, I agree. Well, he is actually Welsh, isn't he? Just not a Welsh speaker.

I don't remember DI Rhys's old house, or her mum living with her. Confused I must have wiped all that from my memory.
