Does Nurse Jackie continue to be so blinking food?

I started Season 1 about three hours ago and can't stop! I loved Edie in The Sopranos which is why I was so reluctant to watch it. It's bloody fantastic but what kind of hospital is it where you can just take drugs left right and centre? Is this the theme all the way through? Does it maintain its excellence?

I don't remember when it jumps the shark, but certainly after Season 2.
