NASHVILLE - Season 4 - SPOILER THREAD

tribpot · 02/11/2015 11:12

This is a thread for those of us watching Nashville at US pace, so we're well into season 4. The last episode broadcast had a big plot development in it and so this thread is to discuss that and the series as a whole.

DO NOT READ IT IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS

I think we may need to do a few posts at the start of the thread so that people who are viewing with preview on the app or mobile site don't see anything so will post a few times before anything is discussed.

NB no discussion about ways to watch the show (or others) at US pace.

I am really glad that Jeff has died. I couldn't stand that asshole. Wonder whether Juliette is going to get accused of his murder?

Now if only they could get rid of Scarlett and creepy Gunner.

And is it me, or has the music been a bit think this season?

And they better be done with the whole Beverly storyline!

'The Beverley'...no no no no no no no no.
Am aghast at the ridiculous retconning of Beverley's storyline. And then...bam, Jeff's gone too. With Juliette's scratchmarks on him...hmm.

It's not that I'm not enjoying S4, but it's veering ever-closer to the ridiculous. I just wish it was more about Rayna, Juliette and the music, as it used to be.

Please tell me how I can watch season 4 from the UK!

Sorry Poppy, no discussion about ways to watch in the UK.

Yes Jjou am totally appalled at the retconning of Beverley, the woman who was completely abusive, an unrecovered addict and general mess. Scarlet seems to have forgotten that she had a breakdown on stage as a result of her mother's abuse.

The Beverley storyline is also ridiculous, perhaps a fitting memorial to a character who didn't make sense. I mean AS IF a recovering alcoholic (and not even a very good one, Deacon's only been sober for months at most) would really want to buy into a bar with his sponsor, I mean COME ON.

The Jeff storyline just made me laugh and laugh - soooo ridiculous, very soapy and in the true spirit of Nashville. Half of me hopes we see Goldie Hawn come to town playing his mum (obvs with Kate Hudson playing his sister). Poor Layla's run of bad luck with men continues, although actually Jeff taking a nosedive is the best thing that could have happened to her in that relationship. I'm pleased to note that Oliver Hudson is on another show and that's why he's been written out, not because they'd got fed up of him. He was a top quality villain and will be missed.

My overriding impression at the moment as far as Rayna is concerned is that her life is so full of family dramas that she can't be getting any time to concentrate on running her own business. If I were Bucky I'd be having a word about replacing her as the chief exec. If I were Rayna, I'd be telling everyone to fuck off and stop hassling me whilst I ran my business.

I've actually enjoyed the music more this season than last season so far, I can't think of any great ones from last season apart from Don't Put Dirt On My Grave?

Very sad that Hayden Panettiere will have to be written out temporarily whilst she seeks help for real life PND, hope she is feeling much better soon. I would assume the show has already been filmed up to the mid-season break so her absence will be next year sometime.

Yes, it must have been tough for Hayden to have to have filmed some of those scenes. Hopefully she'll get the help she needs now.

I'm not too concerned about Deacon buying in to a bar - it could be a way for him to look at different artists and feed the good ones towards Rayna's label. Just naming it after his sister is urgh. It would have been more compelling to show Scarlett and Deacon struggling with the complexities of grieving a person who basically was not very nice and who was extremely abusive to her child, rather than just changing her back story for maximum hand wringing.

Rayna needs to run her business and parent her kids. She's doing neither particularly well. I miss season 1 Rayna I have to say.

I loved Jeff, he was a good baddie (I didn't like him with Layla tho) - I'm not sure why they had to write him off so soapily? He could have just buggered off to L.A like Tandy. I presume it's to enable Juliette to hit rock bottom and head to rehab, but there are other ways to have made that happen.

I love this show but I hope they dial back on the crazy now - I'm not sure it's meant to make us literally lol... :)

In fairness Nashville has always had an extreme body count and death is the preferred way of writing out any minor character - I think Teddy's been bloody lucky just to have got jail time. From the trailer I've seen for next week I think there's going to be a story around young Colt having witnessed what happened.

Trouble is you know Deacon isn't just going to be an owner of the bar, he'll end up pulling pints there with a fag in his mouth like a country version of Bet Lynch in her prime. Blah blah, cue more personal drama for Rayna, Maddy going off the rails and even Daphne getting the hump. I would much rather see Rayna doing more kicking arse in the music biz - I quite like her becoming a producer (esp as Connie Britton seems not to want to sing too much). All she's doing at the moment is standing in the eye of the storm.

And I agree, I think seeing how they coped with grieving for someone who was a bloody awful person would have been much more interesting. I'm surprised Gunnar hasn't brought it up yet.

I'm wondering how long it will be before Will re-signs with Rayna. That's obviously what's going to happen to him. I think it's reasonably brave of them to be dealing with the storyline in a semi-realistic way (given they are part-funded by the State of Tennessee )

Oh yes, the whole redemption of Beverley has been very annoying as well, especially as only a season (?) ago she drive Scarlett to a mental breakdown and didn't even want to be a donor, instead she lied about not being a suitable one. They seem to have rewritten her entire history in this season. Deacon was on the brink of going down the deep end only a week or so ago, and now he is buying into a bar!

I agree about Rayna having no idea of how to parent or run her business. She's barely ever there, and is constantly making bad decisions regarding her artists. Bucky has to have a serious chat with her. She wants to be this neutering label, and yet she keeps abandoning her artists to run off to deal with family drama.

Jeff was a perfect baddie, I agree. But I still hate him though- I guess that's the whole point! Layla is going to go down the deep end again- speaking of Layla, I really liked last weeks song she sang to Rayna about Jeff, can't find it on youtube though.

And who else is hoping that Maddie will end up pregnant?

I will miss Hayden- she plays Juliette really well. Hopefully she will come back having had the treatment that she needs, ready to kick some ass.

Who's going to be the baddy without Jeff, I wonder? Marcus Keen certainly has the potential but Nashville has enough musicians, it needs more management types. I assume poor old Glen is going to return to manage Layla and maybe Juliette - not that I'm suggesting he's the bad guy successor to Jeff.

Obviously the label is going to be in jeopardy because Rayna's invested so much in Marcus. I guess bittersweet redemption might be having to sign Maddie and see her turn into 'the new Juliette Barnes'. Rayna really does need Tandy despite her questionable business practices.

One thing the show has never really covered is the birth of a new star. I'm kind of glad that Will, Scarlett and Gunnar are all shown as having to slog it out year after year trying to get a break. Layla's already been famous once. But it might be interesting to see the complete madness surrounding becoming a star - unfortunately Maddy seems to be the candidate for that although I'd rather it was someone less annoyingly huffy.

Oh - and I miss Liam. Liam needs to come back and solve the Scarlett love triangle.

Anyone see last night's? The hair!

OP posts:

dillite · 15/11/2015 11:40

I did. It was terrible, wasn't it? Pixie cut really does not suit her. And when did Scarlett become a bitch? Gunner's hair is killing me also.

I guess last night's was the last episode for Heiden? I am surprised that there have been so few episodes filmed of the new season, before she went off to rehab.

I did enjoy Layla's song, mostly because it was the only one.

Report
tribpot · 15/11/2015 11:56

I think it wasn't so much the cut as the colour. It reminded me of Beverley - is this the next plotline, Scarlett turns into her mum and Juliet turns into hers?

Gunner's hair is also dreadful, isn't it? Avery at least has the excuse of being both heartbroken and a new parent.

It does look as if Hayden isn't in this week's episode, IMDB has a couple more scheduled for broadcast before Xmas. I would have thought these were all filmed earlier in the year but perhaps they are more recent - I was trying to figure out if anyone had reported on Claire Bowen's new hair a few months ago and couldn't find anything.

I think Luke's 'image consultant' is doing him a very bad turn encouraging him not to go to the police with Colt's (is that really his name?) evidence - when it comes out later the cover-up is going to be far more damaging to the brand.

Hope Hayden is doing better now.

How about this week .. seemed very clunky but I wonder if they had to reshoot unexpectedly around Hayden's illness.

Why on earth has Layla disappeared? Now more than ever they need a young female star on the rise to fill Juliet's shoes (I don't think I can take much more of Maddie). Rayna seems to have a habit of letting people out of contracts at the drop of a hat - Sadie (where the hell did she go?), Scarlet, Layla .. no-one will ever get an album out at this rate.

The Colt-Luke storyline is completely unbelievable. Colt has now told Luke straight out the only thing that will make him feel better is to go to the police .. and still Luke is prevaricating.

I thought it was just me who felt like something was off this week.

Scarlett is becoming a proper bitch, isn't she? And I just can't with her hair. The wardrobe is also terrible.

Deacon seems to be addicted to the bar instead of drinking now- really no idea where his storyline is going to take him as currently it doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

You know, I really want Rayna to just give Maddie a good asswhooping! I'm fed up of watching her assholery, and yes, I know that teenagers are apparently supposed to be assholes, but Maddie is just a spoilt brat. Although, seeing how none of Rayna's female artists seem to ever finish an album, perhaps her signing on Maddie wasn't that bad of an idea- she will kill off her career before it even started!

I think Layla is supposed to be grieving?

Luke's trust of his business advisor is going to bite him in the ass, as once Colt does go to the police, and he will, I'm sure of it, Luke is going to be in deep trouble and lose a lot of money and investors. I won't even be surprised if he gets arrested for preventing justice or something like that. I honestly do not see what the big issue is with them telling the police what Colt saw.

Report
tribpot · 20/11/2015 07:54

It seems to be because Colt will admit to underage drinking. Wow - I bet the police will never have handled a case of that ever before in their lives - not.

Agreed about Scarlet's wardrobe - if they're trying to cast her as the sexy one with Juliet out it is just painful to watch. I'm glad Gunnar was able to deliver a bollocking to his roadie / FWB though.

Maddie's obviously v pissed off to be signed with Daphne, which I think is just going to backfire on poor old Daphne even more. Sign Daph not Mad I say!

Ah Aubrey Peeples has tweeted to say she's not in the next three eps (including the one just gone) because she's filming elsewhere. V unfortunate given the other casting problems.

Deacon seems hellbent on demonstrating why he was a dreadful choice for Rayna (which she already knew given she told Luke she wanted to stop lurching from one man to another when she called off the wedding ... and then did just that).

Oooh I didn't know there was a season 4 thread! I'm just catching up on last night's episode.

I liked Daphne telling Maddie that she didn't want to be like her. I think Maddie is the only person who may be able to get Maddie's head out of her arse.

I was so shocked they killed off Jeff though!

I am flagging with this season, it really seems to be veering too far into soap. There's been next to no music and some of the storylines have been dragged out for far too long already.

I understand that Juliet is an antagonistic character, and I think HP does a great job playing her, but I'm sick of the revolving door of Juliet being a dick.

Saint Beverley is just ridiculous. Deacon is an awful character at the moment.

I'd like to see something happen with Rayna's label that didn't center around one of her artists going off the deep end/screwing up/nearly ruining the label.

Someone needs to do something about Gunnar's hair. Who cut those bits round his ears?!?
