I didn't understand it at allBlush. Someone please explain? I think I got the first bit (ie that hubby likes to watch her with other men) and the bit where she went off with the dark-haired bloke. I didn't get why they went to court, and what the outcome was. Frankly I don't really care but I feel I should at least make a bit of an effort to understand! (particularly as there's bugger all else on the box).

And she then showed that he wasn't due any compensation as young bloke hadn't devalued husband's property, he'd already done it himself.

I thought that he was suing her lover to ruin him as punishment to them both for leaving him and publicly shaming him.

The trial is apparently a famous one, where she proved she was not worth the £20k claimed.

She was a 17th heiress when she married him. She was basically his possession - she had few rights. They didn't sleep together for the 1st 3 months, and when they did, it soon transpired that he preferred watching rather than doing. So he got her to sleep with his friends whilst he perked through the keyhole. Lots of friends. One at a time, as far as we know. She fell for one of them, Bissett, and they had a child (who was raised as the husband's). She and Bissett ran off together and tried to take the child. They expected that the husband would divorce her - she couldn't divorce him back then.

But instead of divorcing her, he decided to have Bissett prosecuted for adultery, or whatever it eas called then. He sued him for the equivalent of £20 million, which would ruin him. But he defence was that yes, she'd slept with the men, but that the husband had made her, and watched her, and colluded in it. And that she'd got an sti from another man, and that they child wasn't his. So the case was passed, there had been adultery, but it wasn't worth 20 damages, only a shilling.

I liked it, but I felt it could have been just an hour.
I feel that it was interesting on the topic of a man's wife being his property.

They went to court because she had come to the marriage with a dowery of £20k. Her husband's problem was that she had run off with another man and he was entitled to compensation to the tune of £20k because that was her 'worth'.
She brought in all the men that she had been made to have sex with to prove that the marriage was pretty much fucked up anyway.

I wanted to know what happened to the baby too.

The baby stayed with the husband, she had two further children too and she sent one to live in Belgium and the other died I believe?

It's true by the way. There had a been a son before the daughter, but he died. Tje daughter remained with the husband who refused to grant her a divorce. And she had another kid with Bissett but then he left her. There were then some shady goings-on in Paris, (she'd had to leave the UK) and she was shunned by all righteous folk. But eventually husband died, she came back to UK and was reconciled with her family (not sure about daughter), and had to go to court to resume her maiden name. She married a man decades younger who changed his name to hers, which was most unusual. And left her fortune to him when she died.

There are different reports of what her dowry was... It said that it was reported that she was worth 100k, then the dowry was said to be 70k but was apparently 52k.

But that is still the equivalent of 10's of millions today!

The daughter died as well. Both of her children did. I only found a mention of two children.

In the scene where her maid brings her a bowl and she is shown to lift up her leg onto a stool, was that to indicate that she was about to do an abortion? It would make sense with all that unprotected sex.

Remarkable isn't it, how a woman could not defend herself in court? And how the honourable men had to have their identity protected by a curtain, where as the piece of furniture that is the wife gets to sit in court and mocked by everyone.

I did love it in the end where she went on her spending spree and how her husband had no choice but to pay. After all, his property does need to be maintained and upkeep costs money.

It was quite hard to follow in the beginning though, as it was hard to understand what's going on, what's flashbacks, and what's what.

I think I'm getting it now. However I still don't get why, if she was worth 20k at the beginning of the marriage, she was worth nothing at the divorce stage? Or did law dictate that, on marriage, she became her hubby's property so worth nothing in her own right during the marriage?

I'm spectacularly thick this morning...
