First time I've seen it. They look like Vegas counsellorsGrin

There's a woman who pulls her hair and I'm bawling my eyes out as they are really helping her Blush

Watched the first 2 but I don't think I can watch it anymore. I don't really get what their therapy actually is. Seems a bit too simplistic. I wonder if the effects last..?

I imagine it's heavily edited. Sometimes it can be
that simple though.

I'm watching one on demand now about a woman who is afraid of sickness.

I just watched that. Despite knowing it is probably a crock of heavily edited shit and marvelling how Ms Speakman managed to look so glam in the daytime, I also had a bloody good cry

Especially when the little boy was crying because his mummy was "beautiful"

That lady who pulled her hair was a lovely person, wasn't she ?

Bugger. Wished I'd watched it now ( sad meaningless life) :)

My friend works with the Speakmans and she says they are amazing IRL.

AnyFucker · 16/07/2014 15:23

Really, blossom. They look quite weird though. I would run a mile confronted by those two, I am afraid.

I just thought the lady today was very sweet, very vulnerable and absolutely lovely.

"Speakman Towers" Looks like they've made a massive wad if that is their gaffe.

Anyfucker-wasn't she absolutely lovely? And her little boy adored his mum tooSmile

I had pretty bad anxiety and had a recent course of CBT, by second session I was 'cured' it really was pretty simple but amazingly effective. I have my 5th and final session tomorrow and I would recommend it to anyone.

They do seem like lovely people Smile

This is an article about the show ( is pretty sneery tho )

And yes they have got a 2.4 million house out of it, apparently.

Is there not massive pressure on the individual to act as though they have been helped though? It would take a lot to say "nope , feel as bad as ever ". I also wonder about the long term effectiveness .
I'm undecided about it all. I worry that it fosters a belief that a good talk and a makeover can change a pattern of thinking that's been ingrained over years and years.
There's something quite charismatic about them. I remember them being on telly years ago but I think it was a healthy living program.
I'd love to hear what your friend thinks iamblossom.

I watched the one with the woman who wouldn't leave the house for fear of sickness. As an emetophobe myself, though not one who is afraid to leave the house!, I found the whole programme deeply unsatisfying. We weren't really told enough about her condition. Even as a fellow sufferer, I still didn't really understand why her behaviour had developed in the last 8 years, and we certainly did not see her fear of being sick addressed at all. Yeah, they got her out of the house, but I doubt her phobia has gone. Simplistic rubbish. Typical of daytime tv.

I doubt very much it's just one hour's session, that's all we see but I expect it's more than that. One thing that my counsellor does is to discuss how to deal with reoccurring anxiety when and as it occurs. I didn't feel any pressure to say I was feeling better, but it wasn't ever presented like that out all came from me.

I know what you mean, they didn't show what actually triggered the fear of sickness 8 years ago.

£2.4 million pound house my fat fanny! Stubley Hall is beautiful but it's right on the main road into Rochdale, and has very little ground to it from what I remember (used to be a restaurant/pub).
Sorry, they bug me intensely..Blush

Watching it again today. They are trying to help a man who is afraid to swallow food. Their advice always seem to consist of saying 'grow up'!

But hey, if it works then I'm not gonna knock it

I'm about to watch today's episode. I do think people get 'stuck' and don't grow up though. Will report back once I've watched itGrin

Hello! I am the lady i see some of you have mentioned. althought the show is only one hour i spent a day with the Speakmans. 18 years of pulling my hair for every hour of every day, i didnt think they would actually make me stop.....but they did! My episode was filmed on 1st May and i still havent pulled a single hair out :D Nik and Eva literally gave me a life because i was purely existing before then! I owe them so much and am proof that althought people say their therapy is an "unproven method" that is does work :)

Well done Dannii. Smile That's brilliant-you must feel fantastic. Do you think there's anyone they can't cure?
It's all about changing people's mindset i think. I wonder how they can do it when others fail?

Report
Danniilonglegs · 18/07/2014 16:35

Thank you! To be honest ive no idea how or why it works but it does!!! Can they cure anyone, i truly believe they can! After all, ask anyone of their thousands of people they have cured, who now can have a bright future! I now have a life back, and quite honestly am happier then i have even been. My hair is growing back and i feel amazing!

Yep it's right on the main road into hell aka Rochdale. They drive around the village in a massive yellow Hummer, and renamed the dirt road to the house "Speakman lane"

Hmm

Hello Danni!Smile

So glad it's continued to work for you, that's brilliant news!

I had cbt for birth trauma, even though it was 13 years ago and my counsellor worked in the same way the Speakmans did, very simple and it's like a light bulb moment isn't it? It really is a case of 'what on EARTH am I doing?'Shock Hmm

My Dh is a northerner and recognised their home instantly,I suspect he's had many a pissed night thereGrin
