I'd love to know what support they got whilst on this course-the program shows very little, but hopefully they did get some! Also, what is the shock news from the trailer of next week!?

I imagine that the 'shock' is the maths teacher leaving - it seemed to be his schools' head and I can't imagine it would be to do with the english teacher. I hope not though, he did seem to genuinely care for his students

soul I agree. Tbh the whole Teach First scheme doesn't sit well with me for that same reason but I guess that's another rant for another thread...

I'm watching it, even though it makes me angry. I'm not a fab of Teach First... Even though my lovely babysitter is about to be interviewed for it. Even the name of it annoys me - Teach First... and then go and get a real job. Angry

I'm still watching. I was horrified with the maths teacher teaching sex education and including masturbation as 'something morally you have to decide is ok' wtaf? What about reassuring children it's a normal part of growing up and nothing to be ashamed of?Shock

The science teacher is struggling, isn't she?

Still watching here too. Am guessing i must be Nick who leaves. I was totally Shock and appalled with his sex education 'lesson'. He could mess people up for life making them think it's immoral to so much as 'touch' themselves! Someone with such strong religious beliefs in this area, shouldn't be allowed to pass them on to young people imo.

I'm struggling with Oliver's sneery expression. I know he can't help it and he seems a lovely and caring guy, but it makes him look really superior, like he's looking down on the kids somehow.

It was hard watching Claudenia putting herself under such ridiculous pressure to be super teacher and trying to get by on a couple of hours kip. Glad Oliver is trying to help her get some sort of work/life balance in place.

And Caleb :( Poor kid. And his poor Mum too. Awful to see him throw away his chance to get the things that are important to him - nice house, car etc. So many kids at this age just can't see past the here and now and how their actions will have repercussions later.

Oliver is ridiculous! Who walks out of a meeting and writes a song in the toilets ffsConfused Hmm Grin

I'm still seething from that sex ed lesson. I watched it with ds who is 12 and spent about an hour bleating on about how it was perfectly natural and part of growing up. Poor kidGrin

I was also Shock about the sex ed lesson. I'd really liked Nick until that point, but he must realise that as a teacher he has a responsibility to present a totally objective view. I wonder if he answered the "have you done it?" Question. I presume he hasn't, given that he's not married.

I'm surprised caleb didn't have a TA to help him,

Report
EvilTwins · 08/02/2014 20:44

Really? On what grounds? He didn't have any learning difficulties. IME, a TA wouldn't be provided simply because he'd spent time in a PRU.

From what's been said here I think I need to catch up on an episode, but I have been watching it too. The last one I saw had some great footage of pupils enjoying time away in a farm environment. Anything that provides those whose world revolves around their postcode with an alternative view of life outside of that closed environment has to be a good thing, surely?
PS. Caleb looks like a young Pharrell, doesn't he? It's heartbreaking to think he will more than likely waste his intelligence on get rich, or more likely into jail, quick schemes.

sometimes in school there may be support staff to go into lessons if a student is on school action possibly a learning mentor.

Report
hellokittymania · 08/02/2014 22:11

Is it on youtube?

No tv and not in UK. Sounds good, though

Report
EvilTwins · 08/02/2014 22:41

Not since support staff have been slashed in most state schools. TA support has to be targeted where it is most needed, and a TA sitting in lessons with an able but troubled student is highly unlikely.

Report
takingthathometomomma · 09/02/2014 12:08

The school I was working in had many troubled students like Caleb, one class with at least half of the students struggling with behaviour and none of them as able as Caleb either. Not a TA in sight!

Sorry that sounded so I know you don't!
I'm happy to message you what happened if you want to know as I'm pretty sure it's not embargoed like the winner of the Apprentice or anything!

Could you PM me please with what's happened? I'm dying to know! Do you know how many of those they're showing on the program are still teaching?

Yes Evil Twin but I don't think he was that able. He said he struggled. I used to work in a large secondary school and he was the sort of dc we would try to support where possible.

But things have probably changed.
