Looks like depressing viewing..

I agree that Broomfield's role was ambiguous. I didn't like the commentary coming from him. I felt it should have come from Hsiao-Hung Pai; it just felt too paternalistic.

It made me so angry. These women are living like this in normal houses down normal streets. Why aren't we doing anything about it? And the bullying madam and her boyfriend - why aren't we kicking them out of the country?

(I really liked the bit when Mustafa got so, so angry and screamed in Hsiao's face and realised just how completely impotent he was against her bravery).

I didn't think it was up to Nick Broomfield's usual standards.
I felt the female investigator was inexperienced, there wasn't enough background information and no conclusion at the end of the show: were there arrests, what happened to the girls etc.

The missing part of the story. Husbands, fathers, brothers, sons...

Nick Broomfield is a hard hitting documentary maker. He isn't afraid to tackle hard subjects. The reporter specialises in investigating the undercover lives of illegal immigrants and has helped save families in the past. She is an experienced professional journalist who has worked with Nick and other docu makers several times. She did a superb job. She was extremely brave and wanted to carry on when Nick told her several times that her safety came first and she could quit. The moment those two absolute scumbags were confronted was amazing. She deserves recognition. The lack of justice at the end was demoralising. But it was honest and showed that there isn't always a happy ending. At least they were exposed and we saw their faces. They will get their just desserts one day. Vile cunts.

I could only watch the first 30 minutes, I was getting too angry and didn't want to stay awake brooding as I had work today.

It might be repeated on 4seven over the next few days, I'll keep an eye out for it and record it.

SinisterSal Tue 24-Sep-13 18:39:14

Yes I thought that too.

The only people who got protected were the punters, with their faces blurred out. I know there are legal reasons for that but still. Funny old world.

And that disgusting pissing man. Have to have sex with him and then clean up his piss. Empowering, of course. angry

I was quite uncomfortable with how far the producers allowed it to go.
Their uncover reporter was in an incredibly dangerous position and they admitted that multiple times they lost their feed, saw images that they didn't understand or that concerned them and could hear her being abused.
She also met them and was visibly frightened and upset at the abuse that she was suffering and imo the way that they persuaded her to go back was not disimilar to the way that Mary was trying to persuade her to become involved with sex work.
It was almost emotional blackmail.

Fairydust1986 Tue 24-Sep-13 00:20:26

Did they go to the police with this footage? No. Did they say they were going to do anything? No. Who cares eh? So long as channel 4 get the ratings then fuck the poor bitches. Smh

I can't believe that disgusting man. He pissed everywhere then expected a discount. [Angry]
What a brave lady she was. At least she got to confront her (and her scuzzy leech of a "boyfriend"). It won't stop her though. She's an abusive pimp.

SinisterSal Mon 23-Sep-13 23:44:15

god this is horrible

SoleSource Mon 23-Sep-13 23:36:07

aturtle I think that Mary felt that Hsaio-hung almost had something over her by refusing to do sex work.

Yes I felt this too.

Whitershadeofpale Mon 23-Sep-13 23:35:45

I got the impression that Hsaio-Hung refusing to be prostituted upset Mary as she felt that Hsaio-Hung believed herself to be superior or better than her.

Although its completely understandable that the nature of the undercover documentary meant that we only saw that microcosm of the industry it would have been very interesting to have learnt more about the massive debts the women all seemed to have to traffickers, and their involvement in the sex trade industry.

Fairydust1986 Mon 23-Sep-13 23:31:05

Deeply uncomfortable viewing, these are hardly empowered women having to sleep with some smelly vile man just so she can pay her smuggler or feed her family.

aturtlenamedmack Mon 23-Sep-13 23:30:04

Oh it was just awful.
Mary knew exactly what to say to get what she wanted. I think any woman who had really been in that position would have caved in very early on.
It was her saying that she wasn't a real mother and that she wasn't providing for her child. It was so awful and cruel.
I think that Mary felt that Hsaio-hung almost had something over her by refusing to do sex work.

AnyFucker Mon 23-Sep-13 23:27:51

Yes, it is Finchley

Being repeated on ch. 4+ 1 if anyone still wants to stomach it

bunchoffives Mon 23-Sep-13 23:25:37

I hope all the stupid women on mn who try and say that being a prostitute or working in the porn industry is a woman somehow asserting a feminist power or right to choose however she wants to be - or whatever other bollocks I've read on here - just so they needn't face up to the fact that their porn-watching partners are tossers - I just hope they are all watching this and thinking again.

Sex workers and porn workers are exploited abused women who need help. Men who go to prostitutes or who watch porn are helping to perpetuate the exploitation and abuse of women - and children.

SoleSource Mon 23-Sep-13 23:18:29

Utter scum

SoleSource Mon 23-Sep-13 23:17:22

Est. 3,000 brothels in London.

AnyFucker Mon 23-Sep-13 23:15:40

Yes, I have watched it (just a few mins to go)

SoleSource Mon 23-Sep-13 23:12:56

Mary is a cunt

LePetitPrince Mon 23-Sep-13 23:07:38

This is awful, isn't it? Looks like Finchley Tesco.. Did they say where it was set?

TheSlug Mon 23-Sep-13 23:01:42

Very upsetting sad

Whitershadeofpale Mon 23-Sep-13 22:58:38

It really is heartbreaking to watch. The pressure they are putting Hsiao-Hung under is awful you can imagine so easily other women caving in. I'm sure this is a well worn routine for Mary to isolate and humiliate women, it's the same dynamics you see in abusive relationships sad

SoleSource Mon 23-Sep-13 22:53:27

Calls her a cunt all of the time. Vile person.

SnoopySnoopyDoggDogg Mon 23-Sep-13 22:49:21

Its awful, and for next to nothing. So degrading. Scary what they have come from to do this.
