Clashing with other stuff, need to look for repeats.

JB - totally understand - it clashes with revenge and switch as true blood

Thank god for +1 - but girls I repeated at 2.05am

I enjoyed it but I don't know if the fact that they are in their twenties I'd going to put me off.

AnonymousBird · 23/10/2012 19:34

Really not sure about it. I flitted between thinking it was a bit flat to quite good, a bit different and unexpected. But I thought the bum sex was just really nasty, I know she was kind of desperate - terrible day and all, drawn to twonk BF, but I struggled with that. TMI!!!!! Rather off putting. Too graphic for "mainstream".

Won't spoil it for you, but I have seen all of it here in the US. I also had the same reaction to the first couple of episodes: 20-somethings are so annoying, this is all a bit gratuitously explicit, isn't this a bit navel-gaze-ly etc etc... Stuck with it as there wasn't anything else decent on and ended up totally loving it and now waiting for the next series (currently being filmed/edited).

Gotta hand it to the writer, Lena Durham, she's only in her mid-20s but has pretty sharp observational skills and a quick and dry humour. The characterisation develops really well, and I think (but what do I know) that is pretty accurately represents the zeitgeist for young people these days. Totally served to make me feel old!

I say stick with it if you can bear it, it comes good and makes you realise that they're not all flaky, all the time.

Were there two episodes last night?

Report
lighthousekeeping · 23/10/2012 19:56

Yes. Twenty something's are annoying! I didn't think it was bum sex if I'm honest. She directed him the other way. It was graphic but, wasn't it refreshing to see a woman with a normal body shape get naked?

I watched it, I found the sex scenes with arsehole boyfriend really uncomfortable viewing Shock I know they were meant to be but good god, what a twat Angry

I like the writing and think Lena Dunham (sp?) is a very talented. I don't quite understand why it's being billed as 'realistic portrayal of young women' when the other 3 characters are model beautiful and Lena is very pretty too.

Glad you said to stick with it though pumpkin Smile

Sitc was good as ladies were just older then me

Where as these girls are a good 10yrs younger

But def worth sticking with it

Also tonight at 10.50 there is a comedy that Lena wrote and started in on film 4 called tiny furniture

Will record and see what I think

But yes stick with girls and yes 2 episodes last night

I'll watch it again, I was kind of intrigued with where it is going to go.

lighthouse - I agree, possibly the jury is out on whether or not it was, but it was pretty grim nevertheless! Or rather HE is VERY grim! eugh.

The fact that Lena Dunham wrote and starred in it is seriously impressive. She really got a rather zany gritty edge to it all and that is what is going to make me continue to watch. I really liked how her character in particular had some slightly rough edged realism to it. She isn't perfect, she doesn't look perfect and she is bloody convincing (ie. real in a great way).

Have to ask - is that long haired bird supposed to be english? Very mid-atlantic! One minute queen's english and then a real twang!

Def good to see a normal woman with curves

And not the usual stick insect with pert fake breasts and ribs showing

Boobs tum&bum - perfect :)

Yes, long-haired bird is supposed to be English. Turns out the actress who plays her is only 24 or 25, and is currently a pregnant Mum of one (maybe Mum of two by now), married to what my Mum would call a 'suitable type'. Ugh. Also, her fashion has spawned a whole new craze here in NYC, young, urban Brooklyn chic. V grim for those of us who were young in the 80s in London...

If you liked the zany gritty edge, def worth continuing to watch - it only gets better in these stakes.

Won't say anything about the boyfriend, but that element of the series was one of the best for me. Quite a lot of intelligent writing in that story line.

Also, meant to say that I think the first episode was the most sensationalist, maybe deliberately to be a hook. For those of you put off by the graphic nature of those bits in the first episode, I can safely say that I don't remember anything else being quite as gratuitous later on in the series.

Blondes - that stuff about normal woman with curves and non-stick-insecty is what has had the cultural reviews here talking about this being the new SITC. There was also loads of stuff about how it can't be that realistic given all the main characters are white, basically middle class, and relatively educated.

Report
lighthousekeeping · 23/10/2012 20:56

She is proper English but daddy was a rock star so she flitted between London and NYC, as you do. They're never about working class women these kind of shows, are they?

My 20 something friends are raving about it. I hope the Girls don't turn out to be Pixie Girls like my friends or I will have to switch off.

I loved SATC, except for The Russian season because they were only a couple of years older than me and I could relate to some of the issues. I did like the nod to SATC at the beginning of Girls but, it is going to be a completely different show. I will stick with it.

X-post re the working class/middle class stuff - you should write for the NY Times, lighthouse!

Ditto light - I could relate to sitc as of the ages

Pumpkin - we need more average/normal size woman acting

Hear hear re average/normal size women on't telly. At least you all get Eastender and Corrie to balance things out a bit; I'm stuck with ruddy HBO-stylee plastic, pert, helmet-haired, semi-naked types as my standard fodder. Oh, and Honey Boo Boo.

I quite enjoyed it and would watch it again. Is it repeated anytime? Just wish it was on a bit earlier in the evening.
