Don't think it was a repeat MrsGuy, they've had trailers for 2 weeks saying it's a new series.

Was very good, did you watch it?

Not a repeat, whole new series which takes us through to 2011 12 Episodes in all -yippee (see below). Up to it's usual high standard. Really enjoyed it -just love the characters and he is yummy despite him being as far away from my usual type as possible!

I'm not the only person watching this then! DH and I love it. How fab is his balcony, overlooking the sea.

Report
aloiseb · 26/08/2012 22:46

Indeed you are not, Capuccino! I also loved that balcony in the last series where he took Livia to a hotel for a weekend (and ended up investigating a murder while she alternately sunbathed and pouted)

Now for some searching questions......

  1. What has happened to Livia - her photo on his desk has been replaced by a calendar?

  1. Didn't Ciccio (the boat guy) get killed off in a previous episode? Maybe they're dramatising an earlier book when he was still alive?

Must try to get one of the books - I still haven't read any, which is shocking.

That's what I was thinking, I need to read the books, that is!

Report
JiltedJohnsJulie · 27/08/2012 08:27

I thought he spoke to Livia on the phone in Saturday's episode, or am I mixed up?

The balcony is fabulous and he is lovely, and he is far from my usual type too Smile.

Have only read one book, August Heat when it was 99p on Amazon's Kindle. Twas very good.

I just came across it and loved it. Who is ingrid (I know she is just a friend but didn't know if she was a constant character or one off)

Report
Gracelo · 27/08/2012 10:34

Ingrid is a Swedish (or Danish?) ex-rally driver with a rich husband. She is not in all episodes. He usually calls her when he needs a fast driver.
My German friend who is married to an Italian has been raving about Montalbano for years. I can see why Smile

There's a couple of websites which are devoted to finding all the places used in the series so there are some real buffs out there. Haven't read any of the books either but i love the series so much I don't know if it would spoil it.

lol, I thought I was obsessed! Montalbano tours... However l also came across the RAi channel website where can view numerous episodes I have missed, tho' no subtitles seem to be available.
Also, have discovered by downloading an italian dictioanry as the default on my kindle, I can read reasonably fluently untranslated ones. This winter ain't gonna be so bad after all....

also interensted to see there are comments about teh casting of Zingarettli as a younger man than the books - at first I also thought this, but he has grown on me... Also in the latest series he is looking more portly...

It is filmed in Sicily - almost shot entirely in Ragusa and surrounding area and seaside locations shot at Punta Secca and Licata. I have only been to mainland Italy, would love to visit Sicily.

So glad you posted this, I've now set the series record!

My DH loves it as it's the only chance he gets to watch something that he understands better than me!

Frontpaw · 28/08/2012 16:37

Don't read the books! He is grumpy, chain smoking, older, very foul mouthed, not as funnt... and has hair!

On the upside... I found that I learned loads of nice Italian curses when I started my classes (not sure if the teacher was all that amused).

I have read the one that was shown on Saturday and it was quite different, and I got all confused.

I love this series! dh went off in a huff because I wouldnt chat when it was on. I also love the books though he isnt as sympathetic a character in them-far more of a shit to livia and a bit of an alky too boot...

Report
Frontpaw · 28/08/2012 16:46

Livia is more argumentative in the book, and sulks with him a lot, which she doesn't do in the series. Camilleri doesnt write women very well and the later books aren't as good - more formulaic and more sex (in the last one I read poor old salvo gets it on with a horsey type in a barn!). Bad boy.

Anyone got a recipe for pasta with broccoli? It is mentioned in every flippin' book and I have never seen it in a recipe book. I feel the need to make some.

I have not had broccoli with pasta, but I have had cauliflower with pasta! it was cold and had been marinaded in lemon, garlic and oil. I don't know if it's just used like that in the part of Italy I go to, but it was very tasty.

My Italian MIL is here at the moment I'll see if I can get a recipe that makes sense without the hand gestures that we use to communicate! Grin

DC tidying DVDs (!!) found Montalbanos I bought from Amazon last year and forgot about 'Hey, look, mum's Italian things!' So was able to see the first episode 'il ladro di merendine' - the Snack Thief), and interesting that the acting was nowhere near as good as it has developed into in later episodes (indeed like many other series - cf Outnumbered) - and also Montalbano was then much more irascible, like the books, than he has become now. Livia also establihsed then as harridan, later watered down...
