Downton Abbey - yawn

Does anyone else think that, for some reason, some TV series get a ridiculous amount of publicity. There always seems to be something about Downton Abbey in the media (the Guardian's got a double page article today). What's the big deal about it? Is it that good (I can't be bothered with something that looks like an updated Upstairs Downstairs)?

It's really good! I don't usually watch things like that but I'm addicted and can't wait for the new series to begin.

I'm a big Upstairs, Downstairs fanhuge!so I thought that Downton was going to be a whole lotta updated, overblown "hooey".

I was proven VERY, very wrong when I stumbled upon the series on my VirginOnDemand. It is extremely juicy and addictive. I watched the entire first series in a week and was screaming for more by the end.

Well worth the time....not sure of all of the media hype, but still good.

A third of the country watched it! And it saved ITV, the impact on ITV has been huge.

It's genuinely great. The settings are period but there is a modern approach to the telling of it.

Last series Lady Mary shagged a visitor to the house and then he died mis-coitus and the women of the house covered it up - it was bloody hilarious.

I read an article that its the most expensive programme produced on terrestial uk tv so i'd imagine they ramp up the media to get the traffic through advertising.

That said, i adore it! I loved larkrise on the bbc too but that got axed. Love a good period drama. Note the word good. The costumes, the storylines, the attention to detail. Its excellent. The daily mail (sorry) had a good bit on their continuity etc. I cant wait for it to come back.

Laurie it wasn't just mid coitus, it was mid up the arse coitus.
When we lived in Switzerland, we couldn't get ITV so wasn't bothered about it.
A friend bought us the boxed set for Christmas and me and DH watched it.
We are both complete converts and can't wait till Sunday. He will have to wait, he's in Belgium now and still can't get ITV.

Love Downton Abbey, even DH watches and enjoys it. In the mood for period stuff atm, currently rewatching House of Elliot which I haven't seen since I was little! Thankyou ITV3! Grin

You are all terrible people because you get to see it NOW.

I love Mr Bates. He's older than my dad but oh I would. Mmmmm-hmmmm. :o

And Maggie Smith is a scream. "Wha...what is a "weekend" ?"

Cheerful yank on the itv website it says the series 2 box set is out at the beginning of November.
I for one cannot wait for the return especially of the deliciously dastardly Thomas.

Up the arse coitus Shock Lady Mary! I must be very naive because I didn't pick up on that... how did they put that across?!

As usual timed it all wrong - missed the first series. Ordered it on DVD which arrived today to discover second series starting sunday. Will never get through it in time!

Oh you're in for a treat hattymattie. Can't you record the second series somehow and work through them in order?

REALLY?! (Re box set being out in November) That is excellent news!

I think the up the arse thing is speculation, isn't it?

CheerfulYank · 15/09/2011 19:55

If I order it from UK Amazon it will play in my laptop, won't it?

Blush I know older DVD players didn't always play UK dvds...

Because he said there were "things we can do" that would allow her to remain a virgin.

God, it is such over-rated drivel. I watched about half an hour of the premiere before turning over from boredom. All that 'her ladyship' and Lord crap was utterly boring. I don't see how it would be possible to bugger Mary with her head so far up her own arse.

Hopefully they'll all either die in the war or contract Spanish Flu and be placed out of their (and our) misery.

God im naive, i assumed he was introducing her to mutual masterbation or the like.
