watched an episode of Tennant Dr Who last night...

with Ds1 and realised just how much I enjoyed those years in comparision to the current series. I just don't get those 'laugh out loud' moments any more - not just at the witty bits, but at the moments that made me think ' Yes, that's brilliant'. I loved the fact that each episode or pair of episodes was a separate story, with the occasional subtle reference to an over-arching thread, rather than the ' let's tie everything in to one bloody great story arc' that we've got now.

I think Matt Smith is a good Doctor, the first episode he was in was great but that episode and the River/Doctor relationship have been the only things that capture the essence of the earlier series for me. Otherwise it's too complicated and moves too fast for any sense of wonder.

Oh I agree, i love watching reruns of Tenant Dr Who, Smith one if it is on I will watch it but not upset if I have missed it.

totally agree with you. Although Matt Smith seems 'wackier' things were flowing much more in the DT ones and the humour even though less obvious and 'clownesc' was more present IMO too.

Human Nature - going to watch Family of Blood later tonight. They're probably my favourite episodes ever.

Something inside me aches when I watch Tennant. Not with Martha though, she left me cold but Donna and Rose were equally watchable. Donna in particular just made me ache with sadness.

I know exactly what you mean! Funnily enough though, Human Nature/Family of Blood are Martha episodes, but i think she's much better in them than in others of the series. I think the main problem was that Freema Agyeman, although a decent enough actress, just couldnt match DT on the acting front, which made her seem stilted. The unrequited love storyline didnt do her any favours either. But in HN/F of B she does the brave protector role well.

Human Nature and Family Of Blood are brilliant, but in general I have the reverse reaction -- when I watch most DT episodes I am struck by how much I prefer the current version. I don't think it's down to DT himself, but IMO his doctor was written as too human overall and Steven Moffat has gone back to a far more alien Doctor. And RTD was altogether too fond of the Daleks, and of coming back later and buggering up the real emotional notes that he did hit (the Doctor and Rose are separated forever and can never see each other again... oh, no, there she is... and, my word, she's back again... oh, look, I hope she's getting frequent flyer points for all this Universe-hopping...).

The unrequited moping bit just annoyed me. Especially post Rose which I thought was brilliantly done. It added nothing at all and ruined a decent dynamic. She is stilted too, you're right. I don't care for Come Along Pond either with her raaar style of delivering lines.

I do agree that Matt Smith is a more alien doctor - and I didnt particularly enjoy the later melancholy emphasis of Tennant's character. But I think I am more drawn to the humanity of his Doctor. I cant bear Amy Pond - thought she was excellent in the first episode, but looking back think it was probably the little girl I was impressed by! She's one-dimensional and has this weird mumble/gabble delivery that I find hugely irritating.

Even my dyed-in-the-wool-DrWho fan DS isn't bothered if he misses Matt Smith .

I don't watch it but I think he's sweet in a geeky way.

David Tennants wide-eyed running about with his mouth wide open routine bugged the t*ts off me TBH.

I've watched the werewolf episode and the Shakespeare ones with Tennant recently and realised just how good they are, all over again. I've enjoyed the Matt Smith doctor who - but I haven't (yet) chosen to rewatch any episodes at all.

I like Matt Smith. Liked DT as well - specially with Catherine Tate, didn't particularly like Freema - she was moping over him too much.
In DT's day Dr Who definitely had a bigger budget. I think they should have ended it on the 27(?) planets special as it went a bit crap after that.

I loved David Tennant - exactly the same as others, I will sometimes watch Matt Smith but it leaves me a bit meh; Amy Pond drives me mad, and tbh the storyline of the most recent episodes just left me baffled. I particularly agree with the point about the story arc - it dominates far too much now.

Tennant made me feel for the Doctor; I just watch Smith in a kind of bemused wonder that he can sustain that level of wackiness for as long as he does.

I only started watching the Matt Smith episodes recently and had not seen any before it so when I watch David Tennant episodes now he seems wrong!

Despite finding Martha annoying, I do think series 3 is my favourite as it had so many great stories - Human Nature/Family of Blood, the fantastic Blink, 42 and Utopia with the wonderful Derek Jacobi. The finale was pretty good too...
