Case Histories - isn't Cambridge photogenic enough?

Somewhat baffled with the BBC version of Kate Atkinson's book. Book is about Cambridge, TV is set in Edinburgh. Jackson Brodie was no hunk in the book ...

Must have been cheaper/easier to do it all in Edinburgh - where subsequent two books are set. Is maybe a Scottish production company or something? I've not seen it - is it on now?

Love the sister's blue dress with the little love birds on it!!

Ah, thanks for the reminder! I've been trying to figure out why so much of this seems unfamiliar. We're in the wrong location Confused

What's so ridiculous is that they are making a big deal of the Edinburgh location with sweeping shots of the city but then the only Scots in it appear to be his daughter and his ex...

I love the bird dress too :)

Very odd but I guess maybe if they are filming the subsequent books there then it might be easier. Very amused that the only Scottish people living in Edinburgh were Glaswegians!

Thought they made a good job of it though. Am always worried when they do one of my favourite books. Think Jason Isaacs makes an excellent JB, though maybe too buff (dribbling emotcion)

I always imagined him to be this fit tbh. Well, I thought he would look like Sean Penn......

Yes, the shortage of Scots accents was weird - and Jackson's bijou cottage seemed at odds with his book character. Has the third murder been mentioned yet?

Really enjoyed the programme, was relieved they hadn't made a mess of her wonderful stories.

Where was that lovely dress from I wonder?

The one in the cottage in the woods Lily?

No it hasn't, I thought maybe there were too many murders to fit into one programme!

I don't understand them setting it in Edinburgh if they weren't going to have a few Scots in it.
I've read all the books and still found this a bit confusing, but will give it a chance.

Maybe cheaper to cast in London and then swoop with cast up north? Everything's about money these days!

Have been fruitlessly googling 'case histories julia's dress' and similar this morning but can find no mention of the lovely blue bird dress, or indeed the nice burgundy one in the first few scenes. Gah! Thank goodness mumsnet at least cuts to the heart of the matter. Hope someone can identify it, for I feel an obsession coming on that could easily swallow up the best part of a working day...

(Thought the programme was pretty good. Not at all how I remember the book, but somehow different in a non-infuriating way.)

I hadn't read the book but commented on the accent thing!Think it's a BBC Scotland production too

Jason Isaac is YUM though Grin

the third murder has been mentioned - surely by the woman he was being ridden by at the end?!

it's such a shame that the whole book is being condensed into 2 episodes - wish the whole 6 episodes had been given over to Case Histories, then another 6 for When Will There Be Good News, etc.

I did spend much of this 1st episode crying though - even DH was crying at Olivia's mouse :(

Have read a number of Kate Atkinson books and was sure I'd read this one, but couldn't remember it being set in Edinburgh. This now clarifies everything and I realise I'm not going mad.

Thought it was pretty well cast actually, apart from Jackson's ex wife, who was a lot posher than I thought she'd be! The little girl who played his daughter was a good little actor though wasn't she?

I read the book but I can't remember who killed the solicitor's daughter or why or the storyline about the girl who wanted him to find someone for her just before he ran out in that gratuitous topless scene Grin.

So I'm enjoying it all over again.

I've not watched it yet but am nervous :) she is my absolute favourite author. This thread gives me some hope that it won't be dreadful.

I really liked the secretary in the solicitors' office's frilly blouse. Really. Liked.

You think that chap playing Brodie is a hunk? He's got a face like a well-skelpt erse. Why doesn't Julia smoke in the film? She's forever smoking and boozing in the book.

Haven't watched it yet but looking forward tremendously. Have a burgeoning crush on Isaacs.

I envisaged Julia to be more... blowsy. Loved the mad cat lady! I had also pictured Jackson Brodie to have a bit of a pub pallor and slight beer gut, but Lucius Malfoy is easy on the eye!

I didn't realise they were doing all the books! Does that include "Started Early, Took My Dog"?

Jackson goes running in the books. I've always pictured him to be not-too-bad looking, tbh.
