Game of Thrones, are you watching it after reading the books? ***SPOILER ALERT***

Just wondering what you are making of it so far!

Casting on the whole is very good, a few things have been changed but have been thinking of what is to come.

Not looking forward to seeing Viserys (even though he deserves it, the arrogant twat!)

Or worse what Theon does when he loses Rickon and Bran!!

My favourite portayal is definitely Peter Drinklage's Tyrion Lannister, he is fab!!

Just had to signal my approval of your name! (Check out my profile and see my words of wisdom on BSG.) We are watching Game of Thrones but am behind because DH is away so can't really contribute much. I haven't read the books. Used to read fantasy when I was younger but tbh I am not that keen now. I do read a lot of sci fi though.

I do recommend them, they are really good!

Big BSG reloaded fan here!

I always pop up on the threads when people post 'we've just finished all The Wire/West Wing boxed sets, what should we watch next?' shouting 'BSG'!!!! I like to think I have converted a few in my time...

My good friend has breast cancer and is currently undergoing chemo. I lent her the boxed sets and she is loveing them!

May have to find DHs Game of Thrones series of books and give them a go.

LOL, I am on ML now and about to start rewatching the series!

Have you seen Razor or the plan?

I have seen Razor and enjoyed it. DH bought me The Plan on DVD for a pressie months ago and swe still haven't got round to seeing it as we have so much on the Sky Plus to plough through. Will probably take it away on holiday when we are away from the Sky Plus and watch it then!

BTW, if you haven't seen the film District 9 then you should. Completely unrelated to BSG, but great gritty sci-fi. If you like BSG I would almost guarantee you would enjoy it.

Whats BSG and, should I be watching it?

Battlestar Galatica

It is amazing, very gritty sci fi.

Though admittedly very disappointed at the ending though.

Notyummy - haven't seen Razor or The Plan, need to borrow from a mate who I know has them!

Can I get the whole lot of Game of Thrones book on kindle? Would it see me through the next 8 weeks?

Also a BSG lover here! saw the whole thing on Sky first time and in my humble opinion, its the best of recent TV. I loved the fact that your could never predict where it would go next, plot-wise.

I've never read Game of Thrones but am totally enjoying it. We're struggling to remember who is who but it seems to be shaping up nicely!

Yes - I rely on DH to give me a bit of a reminder masterclass at the beginning of each episode:

'Now he is the brother of her but he is also sleeping with her. She is married to the King, but he shouldn't really be the King because he is a usurper. This one wants the crown back and will sell his sisters soul to get it etc etc...'

oh, thats exactly the conversation we have notyummy! Half way through one episode, I turned round to DH and said 'that's her brother she's shagged, right?'

Its nice to know we have the plot right so far...Grin

Blush
yes.
I see.
Grin
But would it last me 8 weeks?
Me and DH are constantly reviewing what's going on. I get so lost at the moment. I got a bit confused when one moment the blonde girl hates her husband and the next they are in lurve. Or have I got that all wrong? And why does her (creepy) brother think he's got an army? Or is he assuming he can borrow one?

disclaimer: I often drop off to sleep for a few moments during the ads and haven't managed to catch up with the recorded versions yet.

The creepy brother is assuming that by giving his sister to Drogo, Drogo is then obligated to give him an army to claim back his throne.

Okay here is a brief recap on the main characters

King Robert Baratheon. He organised a rebellion to overthrow Aegon Targyren (known as the Mad King) and replace him on the Iron thrown.
Aegon has 3 children Rhyneas (who died in battle, and his wife, infant son and young daughter were murdered by Gregor Clegane, the Mountain That Rides).
Sandor Clegane is the Hound, the younger brother of Gregor. Aegon's 2 younger children, Viserys and Danaerys fled. Viserys sold his sister to Khol Drogo, chief of the Dothraki horse lords in the hopes he will supply an army to overthrown King Robert. Danaerys fears Drogo at first but eventually comes to love him (probably because he isn't an utter shit like he twat of a brother).
He is married to Cercei Lannister who is fucking her twin brother, Jaime (known as the Kingslayer - he was the Hand of the King to King Aegys until he is killed him). Cersei is married to King Robert and has 3 children, Myrcella, Joffrey and Tommen.
Tyrion Lannister is the younger brother of Cersei and Jaime.
Lord Jon Arryn was the Hand before Lord Eddard Stark. He was married to Lysa, sister of Catlyn Stark. Ned believes he was murdered and is trying to find out why.
Lord Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell. He and Robert are long time friends and allies. Robert was to marry Ned's sister but she died.
Ned Stark is married to Catelyn, and has 5 children, Robb, Sansa(betrothed to Prince Joffrey), Arya, Bran (who was paralysed when Jaime shoved him out of a window because he had seen him fucking his twin sister) and Rickon. Ned is now the new Hand of the King.
Ned also has a bastard called Jon Snow. He doesn't know who his mother is, but Catelyn hates him. He has gone off to join the Night's watch.
Peter Baelish (known as Littlefinger) old friend of Catelyn and Lysa, he was in love with Catelyn but Ned defeated him.

I have read the books; eagerly waiting for the 5th one coming out in July! I think that the series is very good so far: good casting and the story is very faithful to the book.

Fantasy as a genre can get criticised for being a bit sexist towards women but I think the strong female roles have been great to see and read. I think they have softened Catelyn and Cersei a wee bit.

I had heard that each book was going to have its own series and I can't wait!

Am loving Game of Thrones - the adaptation is so close to the book, and the casting is almost perfect. I was so excited when I heard it was being done by HBO, and it's totally living up to my expectations.

We're in for a rollercoaster ride, and it's going to be a LOT of fun :)

I think the blacksmith is the bastard of the mad king (?).
god I dunno. I had to read and re-read karastarbuckthrace post about 5 times as it was. Grin
I have watched them all through now and I think I'm more clued up.
So Viserys (the yucky brother what sold his sister after feeling her up) meets a sticky end eh?

I love Tyrion, how he is a complete shit until it matters. (at the moment in my virgin state you understand)

I looked at the kindle version but according to the reviews the kindle version isn't very good, so I'm going to get all the books so far in book form. (in case anyone's interested arf)

I looooove Game of Thrones, I'm on book 2 just now and cannot get enough. I cannot wait to see the reaction to the "events" at the end of the book/series, I think the internet might explode!

Love Peter Dinklage as Tyrion, he is perfect.

And Jon Snow is fairly easy on the eye as well.

Twit, Viserys gets crowned, but perhaps not in the way anyone will expect.

I'll say no more to avoid spoilers, but believe me, it is good.

Not just brother but twin brother!

(haven't watched this week's episode but know what happens)

Jaime wasn't Hand of the King. He was one of the white-cloaked Kingsguard. Hand of the King is a political title for 'most trusted advisor'. The Kingsguard are, well, the King's personal guards. Supposed to protect the King. That's why it is supposed to be so bad that he killed him.

(it probably doesn't matter but Mad King Aery's older dead son was Rhaegar, he was killed in battle and his wife and small children were killed too)

I think the blacksmith is the son of Robert, the current king. But whether the mother with blonde hair was Cersei or not I don't know. As Ned is reading a book on genetics and all Robert's legit children have blonde there is obviously something wrong.....

I am wondering whether to start reading the books or maybe get them as audiobooks, but will be very irritated if they are read in American accents, does anyone know? Sean Bean is great in this, will only be able to hear his voice a Ned now.
