does anyone know of any organisations etc that concentrate on trying to give awareness and education to young girls AND boys about pregnancy? Something close to my heart is the number of teenagers getting pregnant in our country these days. I appreciate that from the age of 16 they are legal and any planned pregancy is another matter. My concern is the increasing number of children especially under 16 who are getting pregnant each year.
kids are trying to grow up so quickly these days but what is actually being done about educating them about this topic. Both the girls and the boys need educating.

Hi Helsi i dont know any orginisations bt just wanted to say im a teenage mom and will be willing to help you with anything you need to know

Thanks. I was watching a TV programme recently when a documentray was made following a certain group of randomly selected teens from different areas across the country. The lack of sex education was appalling and these kids were about 13 to 15.
Some of them were tested and had alsorts of STD's (luckily none were HIV+) but they didn't know what the disease was and a couple of the boys attitudes were (when advised to contact all partners) was "well they were all slappers and no I'm not going to contact them".

How pathetic and childish - to me that shows they are not mature enough for sexual relationships.

We have just experienced a weekend with a virtual baby! DD's school had 30 of these, and boy was it hard work. After one night she was wailing "I'm 14, too young to deal with this! I am NEVER EVER having a baby - I will adopt a 4yr old"

The whole experience was a great learning curve. Taking the doll to church, she had to sit in the creche! But she learned that a baby in a supported family planned environment can be shared amongst other carers. The life of a single mum (only DD could look after the baby as she was tagged - although we did manage to cheat a bit) is not to be contemplated.

THe local Health Visitors all have access to these dolls, which should be compulsory for all teenagers!

we had one of these each at school they were great experience for us.

they are a nightmare my wee sis actually had to call the school nurse out cos her baby stopped "breathing" (the batteries ran down) was a total nightmare

Milliways · 14/06/2005 21:45

The boys were made to have them first

They even have "Drug addicted" babies that scream as if in pain and are deformed according to DD - she said they looked terrible. No-one at her school had to look after one of these, they were just part of the general talk.

The company that make the dolls also do pregnancy bumps!

evry local authority or county council area should have a 'TPU' teenage pregnancy unit. you should be able to access this on you local councils website.

there was someone doing research on it very recently on mumsnet and sent out survey forms and everything - try searching mumsnet for teenage pregnancy - the name nutty comes to mind but not sure if it was her who did it

Tortington · 15/06/2005 12:18

hows your research gathering going helsi?

helsi · 15/06/2005 21:26

not started yet custardo but thanks for asking.

Been busy at work but have gethered some info of places to go to first of all. Might sit down this weekend and go into it properly.
