DS hates his part time job and wants to quit

Hi,

My 18 year old DS has a part time job in Argos and has said he feels he can’t continue there anymore.

He started last summer and works Saturdays and Sunday’s alongside another colleague. He had no manager as she was off sick for a while and so he was thrown in at the deep end with no training so he had to lean on this colleague for support and ask her for help quite a lot.

I think she started to get pissed off, she appeared to be grumpy and unfriendly around him and made remarks to him both front of customers and away from customers for example, he was helping a customer with their new tablet and he must have made mistake and she said to him “that’s not the way you do that, that’s completely wrong”

He has also said that when he goes on his breaks she looks at the clock and then tells him when he needs to come back.

There’s so much more, but she found out through another colleague that knows my sister that DS has a learning difficulty and then she went and told other staff members about this.

Apparently she also has been slabbering about him too.

Anyway, he reported this to his manager and apparently she spoke to this colleague. She isn’t as rude anymore but she doesn’t speak to him, they basically work in silence the whole shift.

There was a new girl that started and DS told her he thinks that the other colleague is a bitch and told her all about her (over Facebook Messenger) this new girl has gotten very close to the manager and DS is worried that she’ll tell his manager he has been slabbering about the other colleague and he’ll lose his job.

Is he right to be worried? I’ve told him not to tell anyone anything no matter how much you think you can trust them.

Are you after any advice or just off loading?

Well does he want to quit or not? If he does then he should- he can probably get another similar job fairly easily.

@Pipandmum no deep down he doesn’t want to leave as the money he gets is pretty good for his age and he doesn’t want to go back to minimum wage.

He Is just terrified that he will be disciplined for talking about another colleague (I know he has a reason to talk about her, but my advice is that shouldn’t talk to people he doesn’t really know about things like these

I would encourage him to look for a new job, he sounds miserable.

He has also said that when he goes on his breaks she looks at the clock and then tells him when he needs to come back.

er...... and ? Not sure why you think this is an issue ? Confused

Apparently she also has been slabbering about him too.

What does 'slabbering' mean ?

There was a new girl that started and DS told her he thinks that the other colleague is a bitch and told her all about her (over Facebook Messenger)
Why would he think this was a good idea ?

IMO, a HUGE part of what you get from your first PT work, is exactly everything he is getting here - learning to work alongside people and learning how to negotiate his way through the workplace. Learning (as it seems he needed to....) not to slag a current colleague off to a new colleague.

He is 18 now. He needs to understand that if he wants money to spend, then he needs to earn it. Overwhelmingly, PT jobs you can do around school and college and, quite frankly, lots of FT, permanent jobs are rarely interesting, satisfying, challenging and really enjoyable - they tend to be poorly paid, poor conditions, and working with people who are fed up and grumpy.
If he looks for another job, odds are it will be in a similar environment.

Of course, if he doesn't want to put up with it, then he can leave, but then he'll have no money. Up to him really.
