DD16 not had a period in 7 months, what is causing it?

I feel like the worlds shittest mother for not noticing. Since she started she’s always just got on with it, bought her own stuff etc. She puts her own clothes in the wash. I had no reason to believe she was having any issues.

Then today she tells me she’s actually not had a period in 7 months and she wasn’t bothered at first as she read it was normal but is now starting to get worried. She is def not pregnant (says she has never had sex and I believe her) but she is just starting a new relationship so obviously stuff like that will come in the near future and she wants to know what is going on with her body. I’ve made it absolutely clear to her that this does not under any circumstances mean she can lax contraception, and that until we know what is causing this then while being sexually active she has to assume that she could get pregnant. She seems to understand.

She’s going to book a Drs appointment tomorrow, and while there discuss periods and also contraception. DD doesn’t know this but there is history of unexplained infertility with the females on her dads side. One of her aunties has 2 boys but the other tried for years and could never conceive. As did a lot of of her dad’s cousins.

Has anybody else experienced this?

Whether you believe her or not, it’s the first thing a GP will suggest. Get her to do a test. Go from there.

Hopefully the doctor can help figure out what's going on, but by all means keep the conversation going about contraception.

Not at all unusual. I remember going for five to six months at 17 without a period and before that I had gaps. It just takes a while for the cycle of some girls to settle. Eventually mine settled to every 29-25 days but after that I had big gaps at times.

If your daughter is definitely not pregnant I'm sure your GP will reassure her.

Does she eat properly? Has she lost weight recently? Does she do lots of sport?

I don't want to alarm you, but I have had a teenager with an eating disorder, and when her body weight was too low she had no periods. They restarted once she had returned to a healthier weight.

Is your DD very slim? Hormones are affected by all sorts of reasons.

is she eating enough, and a good balanced mixed diet, and not over-exercising.
sometimes it just happens. I had gaps for many months, no reason.
when she says she hasn't had sex, she does know that there are some activities that can result in pregnancy, even though they are not what might be referred to as having sex.
could also be polycystic overy syndrome.
its good she's going to the doctor.

Yep I had this as a teen.

Turned out it was caused by weight fluctuations. Doc said some women's periods are affected by changes in weight. Periods returned out of the blue 8 months later when my weight was relatively stable.

Went on to get pregnant 3 times so no impact on fertility.

Weight is fine, she is just under 10 stone. Definitely not under eating. She doesn’t have the best diet right now, she’ll have a Dominoes with her mates every week etc. Tbh though most of the teens I know have a diet that leaves a lot to be desired.

I know the doctor will likely do a pregnancy test. I’m not naive, I know that no matter how much she tells me she’s never had sex I have no way of knowing. Even if she has though, I don’t think her being 7 months pregnant is in any realm of possibility.

If she's not pregnant you should get her pituary bloods checked.

Could just be her age? My periods didn't actually get regular, as in one period per month, until I was about 30.

Does she run a lot? One of my cousins doesn't get a period when she exercises too much.
It could also be pcos.

My Dd15 periods stopped and she was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid.

I had this and I have PCOS. Check other symptoms and whether she has any of them. It doesn't always mean being overweight

I went 9 months without a period at that age. Reckon it might have something to do with my suspected PCOS. Don't know for certain as I never went to the GP at the time about it only later

What is PCOS my dd is 16 and waiting on a gynae apt as only every had one trace off a period. She is thinking about contraception as she has a bf and will be going to concerts in the summer. She wont tell the doctor why she needs contraception wants me to say it's for heavy periods but they will take her off gynae list if I say that any advice.

My were always all over the place, sometimes I didn't have one for more than a year.
